Book excerpt: Summer chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in the Yukon River support robust commercial and subsistence fisheries; however, fishery managers have had incomplete information about their run timing, spawning distribution, stock composition, and abundance. To address this, a radiotelemetry study was implemented on summer chum salmon in 2014 and 2015. A total of 1,232 (2014) and 1,199 (2015) summer chum salmon were fitted with radio transmitters. Radiotagged summer chum salmon were mapped, travel rates were estimated, and proportions of tagged fish recovered within different tributaries were determined. Basic mark-recapture assumptions were tested and abundance above the tagging site was estimated. Summer chum salmon were found to be widely distributed within the Yukon River drainage. Although a few tagged fish were observed in most locations, roughly 50% of tagged fish were observed in the Anvik, Koyukuk, and Bonasila rivers each year. Summer chum salmon destined for upper river spawning areas traveled faster than those to lower river areas. Summer chum salmon tended to recover quickly after being tagged, and traveled relatively fast within the mainstem Yukon River, but slowed down after entering their spawning tributaries. The 2014 mark-recapture abundance estimate was about 2,100,000 fish, which corresponded with summer chum salmon passage at the mainstem Yukon River sonar near Pilot Station. The 2015 mark-recapture abundance estimate was also about 2,100,000 fish, which was larger than the summer chum salmon passage at the sonar near Pilot Station. Results from this study help to evaluate sonar passage estimates and provide fishery managers with more detailed information about distribution and migratory patterns of individual summer chum salmon stocks within the Yukon River drainagewide population.

Book excerpt: A 2-year radiotelemetry study was conducted in order to better understand fall chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta distribution and spawning habitat utilization in mainstem of the upper Tanana River. Fieldwork in 2007 consisted of feasibility investigations involving tagging, tracking, and habitat monitoring methods. In 2008, a total of 412 chum salmon were radio tagged in the lower Tanana River and 294 were successfully tracked to final spawning areas upriver. The majority of radio tagged chum salmon (67.4%) were tracked to spawning areas located in the upper Tanana River mainstem from Fairbanks to upstream of Delta Junction, excluding tributaries. Variations in timing by spawning location were observed. Average dates of passage at the tagging site were August 26 for radio tagged chum salmon destined for runoff tributaries; September 9 for the Delta River and Tanana River mainstem above Big Delta; and September 17 for the Tanana mainstem downstream from Big Delta. Migration rates of chum salmon radio tagged in 2008 averaged 19.0 km/day between the tagging site and the first upstream mainstem remote tracking station, 31.2 km/day between the first and second mainstem tracking stations, before dropping and 15.2 km/day as chum salmon approached spawning areas in the upper Tanana River. The distribution of tagged chum salmon, combined with habitat monitoring data, suggests that the upwelling areas located in the upper Tanana River mainstem serve as spawning habitat for approximately 85% of Tanana River fall chum salmon. The data collected by this study demonstrated that mainstem spawning areas of the Tanana River are crucial to overall Tanana River fall chum salmon production.

Book excerpt: The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), actively manages chum salmon fisheries in the Yukon River drainage. The purpose of the Anvik River sonar project is to monitor escapement of summer chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon O. gorbuscha in the Anvik River drainage, believed to be the largest producer of summer chum salmon in the Yukon River drainage (Hayes et al. 2008, Larson et al. 2017). Timely and accurate reporting of information from the Anvik River sonar project helps Yukon River fishery managers ensure the Anvik River Biological Escapement Goal (BEG) of 350,000 to 700,000 summer chum salmon is met (ADF&G 2004). This assessment is necessary to determine if summer chum salmon abundance will meet downstream harvest and upstream escapement needs. Fishery openings and closures may be based in part upon this assessment. This project uses imaging sonar equipment on the Anvik River to generate timely, in-season passage estimates of salmon (Brodersen 2021). Beach seine sampling is conducted to collect biological data used in characterizing the summer chum salmon run and tower estimates are used to apportion passage estimates to species. The project site is located approximately 76 km upstream from the mouth of the Anvik River (Figures 1 and 2) and is scheduled to operate continuously from approximately June 16 through July 26, 2023.

Book excerpt: Biological data were collected from Chinook Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and summer chum O. keta salmon along the United States portion of the Yukon River drainage in 2018. Age, sex, and length data were obtained from 4,774 Chinook and 5,907 summer chum salmon from commercial and subsistence harvests, test fisheries, and escapement projects. Samples were collected from salmon caught using gillnets, dip nets, fish wheels, beach seines, weir traps, and from hand-picked carcasses. Sex and length were recorded for nearly all salmon sampled. Ages were successfully estimated for 89% of the Chinook salmon and 93% of the summer chum salmon. This report provides a summary of the age, sex, and length data collected in 2018 for Chinook and summer chum salmon and is a single source document for historical summaries of long-term projects that collect age, sex, and length data from the Yukon Area. This report also provides a brief description of the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Database Management System (AYKDBMS) which is a publicly accessible online data archiving system that acts as an interface to query and download historical age, sex, and length data.

Book excerpt: This book identifies accumulated environmental, social and economic effects of oil and gas leasing, exploration, and production on Alaska's North Slope. Economic benefits to the region have been accompanied by effects of the roads, infrastructure and activies of oil and gas production on the terrain, plants, animals and peoples of the North Slope. While attempts by the oil industry and regulatory agencies have reduced many of the environmental effects, they have not been eliminated. The book makes recommendations for further environmental research related to environmental effects.

Book excerpt: Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.

However, to date, none of have presented the often fascinating stories of the wildlife science, and the steps along the way from discovery of problems caused by environmental pollutants to the regulatory and non-regulatory efforts to address the problems. This book provides case by case examinations of how toxic chemical effects on wildlife have brought about policy and regulatory decisions, and positive changes in environmental conditions. Wild animal stories, whether they are about the disappearance of charismatic top predators, or of grossly deformed embryos or frogs, provide powerful symbols that can and have captured the public's imagination and have resulted in increased awareness by decision makers. It is the intent of this book to present factual and balanced overviews and summaries of the science and the subsequent regulatory processes that followed to effect change (or not). We cover a variety of chemicals and topics beginning with an update of the classic California coastal DDT story of eggshell thinning and avian reproduction to more recent cases, such as the veterinarian pharmaceutical that has brought three species of Asian vultures to the brink of extinction. Researchers, regulators, educators, NGOs and the general public will find valuable insights into the processes and mechanisms involved both in environmental scientific investigation and in efforts to effect positive change.
