The history of this agricultural and business activity spans a period of more than one hundred and thirty years; throughout this entire time ginning has been of some significance in the state's economic life. During its history the industry has expanded from a handful of small plantation gins located in the "water and woods" area of the state to an industry reaching out across the western plains and extending southward into the Lower Rio Grande Valley. An attempt has been made to show the origin and development of the old plantation ginning industry of the pre-Civil War period and its transition into commercial ginning during the post-war days. Also, considerable space has been devoted to the gin machinery manufacturing phase of the ginning industry. A few decades saw this phase of the industry grow from a few scattered shops producing for local markets to a number of large companies manufacturing gin machinery not only for local markets and the cotton belt but for every cotton producing country in the world. Also important in the history of Texas ginning has been the co-operative or farmers' gin movement.
