Significant gaps exist in understanding lake sturgeon in the system as well as the methods needed to properly monitor and assess them. My research had three main goals: (1) investigate movements and habitat use of lake sturgeon in the Lake Champlain basin, (2) develop a method to estimate lake sturgeon abundance using sonar technology, and (3) test an alternative method for aging lake sturgeon. One of the primary information gaps for lake sturgeon in Lake Champlain is an understanding of the movements and habitat use of multiple life stages. I used acoustic telemetry to describe seasonal movement patterns and distribution of adult and juvenile lake sturgeon and to quantify the spatial overlap between these life stages. We found that juvenile and adult home ranges overlapped in shallow ( 10 m) water in the summer and fall. During the winter, adults remained in shallow water and juveniles moved to deep-water ( 25 m) overwintering sites. These results identified important areas for lake sturgeon and indicated that there are seasonal differences in habitat use between life stages. I also used acoustic telemetry to describe adult lake sturgeon movement patterns during the spawning period and to investigate environmental drivers of these movements in the Winooski River. River discharge, temperature, the magnitude and direction of the change in temperature (3-day lag), and time of day were significant factors in describing upstream movements. Adult lake sturgeon displayed general movement patterns that included a single run upstream, upstream and downstream movements throughout the river, or multiple runs made up the entire length of the spawning tributary to the spawning site. An understanding of the movements during the spawning period was key in the method I developed to estimate lake sturgeon abundance. To estimate abundance of lake sturgeon spawning in the Winooski River, I used acoustic telemetry data from adult lake sturgeon to estimate observation probability of the sonar and the probability that a lake sturgeon had been seen previously during the season. Using a Bayesian integrated model, I combined these parameters with counts from a dual-frequency identification sonar (DIDSON) to estimate abundances each year: 110 (47 -- 229 CI) in 2017, 133 (79 -- 242 CI) in 2018, and 99 (51 -- 220 CI). The results of this work represent the first estimate of abundance for spawning lake sturgeon in a Lake Champlain tributary, and will be key to tracking progress towards lake sturgeon recovery moving forward. Age data in long-lived species such as lake sturgeon can point to signs of successful recruitment and recovery. I investigated use of the second marginal pectoral fin ray as an alternative, less invasive method for estimating ages of lake sturgeon. The variability of age estimates among different readers and fin structures indicated that the second fin ray may provide some utility to age juvenile lake sturgeon but is not a viable substitute for estimating ages of adult lake sturgeon. These results provide valuable information to managers looking to gain essential age data while also decreasing the impact of handling endangered lake sturgeon.

Book excerpt: Describes a field study designed to establish seasonal habitat use relationships for adult lake sturgeon on the Groundhog River, north-eastern Ontario. The study was conducted in 1996 and examined lake sturgeon habitat use during spring and autumn seasons, representing high and low water conditions respectively. Fish were netted in randomly chosen locations in the study area, upstream and downstream of the Camus Rapids, and were measured, weighed, marked, and released. Catch, meristic, and habitat parameter data were entered into an electronic data base and analyzed using the SYSTAT program. Results presented include sturgeon length frequency distributions, substrate and depth preferences exhibited, and stream velocity preferences.

Book excerpt: Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) populations have experienced declines throughout much of the Great Lakes and are currently a target for restoration. The Lower Fox River is a highly modified river system that hosts a small remnant Lake Sturgeon population. Previous work confirms annual spawning and some natural reproduction but inconsistent monitoring yields little understanding to current status and sustainability of this population. Chapter 1 describes the biological attributes of the spawning adult stock during 2017-2019 and the environmental conditions surrounding these annual events. In addition to a demographic description of adults, spawning habitat quantity and quality were evaluated to showcase reproductive potential of Lake Sturgeon below the De Pere Dam in the Lower Fox River, Wisconsin. Our description of adult demographics suggest adequate population structure exists to support reproductive success and spawning occurs during favorable seasonal conditions; therefore this population should be capable of significantly higher levels of larval production. Examinations of spawning substrates, incubation habitats and egg predation identified several factors influencing the reproductive success of this population. Locations of spawning activity are problematic on this system due to temporal desiccation events, algae colonization and egg/larval dislodgment which may severely restrict egg and larval survival. Consistent monitoring of spawning adults and larval production would continue to describe the stability of this population. Improvements to habitat quality and quantity should become priority restoration actions to ensure reproductive success. The ability to improve egg and larval survival would provide the opportunity to assign restoration targets and assess the effectiveness of restoration strategies for this population. Chapter 2 continues to evaluate Lake Sturgeon habitat availability in the Lower Fox River by investigating the riverine use of juveniles. Expanding knowledge pertaining to early life stage habitats and movement patterns are listed as a critical need for management. Documented low levels of production within this river system make it uncertain if wild juveniles are present and to what extent nursery habitats exist. Previous habitat models suggest ample juvenile habitat is present, however a legacy of pollution and recent restoration actives to remove contained sediments and improve river condition, make it uncertain if the river is utilized as a nursery area. Age-0 Lake Sturgeon were implanted with hydro-acoustic transmitters and tracked for 40 days during late summer in 2018 and 2019 to document movement patterns and areas of occupancy in the Lower Fox River. Results demonstrate that juvenile Lake Sturgeon will reside in the river system for extended periods of time and congregate into focal habitat areas. Six core habitat areas were identified in the upper river section suggesting the presence of functional nursery habitat. This is the first documentation of juvenile Lake Sturgeon habitat use following restoration activities in the Lower Fox River and will serve to help guide future habitat improvements and further knowledge of juvenile life stage ecology in this river system. The information gathered in this study provides a greater understanding to the reproductive limitations of this population and early life history needs as well as assign restoration targets to improve Lake Sturgeon sustainability in the Lower Fox River.

Book excerpt: "The habitat preferences of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) were compared by literature review of 24 study areas across three major North American watersheds in five categories: depth, substrate, current, home range size and preferred prey items. Comparisons focused on differences in adult and juvenile habitat preferences. Patterns and trends were used to test evidence of a size structure in spatial distribution by life stage. Juveniles are encountered in deeper water more often than adults are. Both adults and juveniles exhibit similar prey and substrate preferences. Adults and juveniles both prefer areas with low to medium current velocities with some evidence that adults prefer slightly higher currents. Home ranges of adults are much greater than home ranges of juveniles. These patterns are confounded by the wide variation in preferences in all categories for both adults and juveniles. Studies comparing both adults and juveniles in the same area provide stronger support for size structured separation in Lake Sturgeon. These types of studies are most effective for illustrating site-specific variation in habitat use, as well as adult and juvenile habitat differences."-- abstract.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The Menominee River is a Michigan-Wisconsin boundary water historically traversed by lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), but now contains fragmented populations between hydroelectric dams. Though fish passage is currently being implemented on the lower dams, it is unclear whether sturgeon given access to historic spawning grounds would use them. In 2012 and 2013, a total of 15 pre-spawning sturgeon were captured, implanted with sonic transmitters and translocated upstream over two hydroelectric dams to the stretch below the historic spawning site of Sturgeon Falls. Sturgeon were then tracked via five stationary receivers from April 2012 until August 2013, and with a portable receiver April to September 2012 and May to August 2013. Abiotic habitat features, including water depths, temperatures, present substrate particle classes, dissolved oxygen, and light intensities near the river bottom, and biotic features including invertebrate sampling and vegetation mapping were also collected. Within 2 weeks of translocation, seven of the study sturgeon were detected near the historic spawning site, where sturgeon spawning behavior was observed both study years. Within 48 hours of translocation, the remaining 8 study sturgeon all migrated at least 10 rkm upstream, near two other potential spawning sites within the study area. Habitat measurements suggest that the study stretch contains suitable habitat for year-0, juvenile, and adult lake sturgeon. In-stream vegetation appeared to create a barrier to sturgeon movement in 2012, but did not in 2013 when observed vegetation was at half the coverage as the previous year. This study has found that if pre-spawning sturgeon from an impounded stretch of river are given access to historic upstream spawning habitat, they will migrate to this habitat. Sturgeon spawning activity near Sturgeon Falls Dam was observed in both study years.
