Book Synopsis Agrarianism as Modernity in 20th-Century Europe by : Alex Toshkov
Download or read book Agrarianism as Modernity in 20th-Century Europe written by Alex Toshkov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst Soviet communism and its relationship with modernity has been widely studied to date, the agrarian experiment in Eastern Europe has been relegated to the margins of historical analysis. In this comparative study, Alex Toshkov uncovers the history of agrarianism after the First World War and explores its place as an alternative modernity to liberal democracy and capitalism. Drawing on a wealth of archival material, this book explores the transnational connections between the paradigmatic cases of Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia, as well as the International Agrarian Bureau in Prague, teasing out contradictions, hidden records and silenced interpretations of agrarianism. In addition, it uses a microhistorical approach to present an innovative theoretical framework which adds to our understanding of nationalism, political corruption, and alterity and the subaltern. This fascinating study restores interwar agrarianism to its rightful place as one of the most original and significant political currents in 20th-century Europe.

Book Synopsis Culture, Ideology and Politics (Routledge Revivals) by : Raphael Samuel
Download or read book Culture, Ideology and Politics (Routledge Revivals) written by Raphael Samuel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this book is inspired the ideas generated by Eric Hobsbawm, and has taken shape around a unifying preoccupation with the symbolic order and its relationship to political and religious belief. It explores some of the oldest question in Marxist historiography, for example the relationship of ‘base’ and ‘superstructure’, art and social life, and also some of the newest and most problematic questions, such as the relationship of dreams and fantasy to political action, or of past and present — historical consciousness — to the making of ideology. The essays, which range widely over period and place, are intended to break new ground and take on difficult questions.
Book Synopsis Imperial Rule and the Politics of Nationalism by : Adria Lawrence
Download or read book Imperial Rule and the Politics of Nationalism written by Adria Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of the twentieth century, movements seeking political equality emerged in France's overseas territories. Within twenty years, they were replaced by movements for national independence in the majority of French colonies, protectorates, and mandates. In this pathbreaking study of the decolonization era, Adria Lawrence asks why elites in French colonies shifted from demands for egalitarian and democratic reforms to calls for independent statehood, and why mass mobilization for independence emerged where and when it did. Lawrence shows that nationalist discourses became dominant as a consequence of the failure of the reform agenda. Where political rights were granted, colonial subjects opted for further integration and reform. Contrary to conventional accounts, nationalism was not the only or even the primary form of anti-colonialism. Lawrence shows further that mass nationalist protest occurred only when and where French authority was disrupted. Imperial crises were the cause, not the result, of mass protest.

Book Synopsis Inequality and Political Cleavage in Africa by : Catherine Boone
Download or read book Inequality and Political Cleavage in Africa written by Catherine Boone and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking work integrates African countries into broader comparative theories of how spatial inequality shapes political competition over the construction of markets, states, and nations. Existing literature on African countries has found economic cleavages, institutions, and policy choices to be of low salience in national politics. This book inverts these arguments. Boone trains our analytic focus on the spatial inequalities and territorial institutions that structure national politics in Africa, showing that regional cleavages find expression in both electoral competition and policy struggles over redistribution, sectoral investment, market integration, and state design. Leveraging comparative politics theory, Boone argues that African countries' regional and core-periphery tensions are similar to those that have shaped national economic integration in other parts of the world. Bringing together electoral and economic geography, the book offers a new and powerful map of political competition on the African continent.
