This book takes you on a journey through the lives of four unique cats who brought an array of changes, challenges, and joys to our lives. The story begins with Tiggy, a confident cat who nonchalantly followed us home one day and decided to make our house her own. Next came Barney, whose initially promising relationship with us took a turn when he began exhibiting aggressive behaviour. Willow, a shy and timid cat, joined our family and slowly learned the joys of the outdoors, while Chase, the outgoing explorer, preferred the comforts of indoors and needed gentle persuasion to venture outside. Chase’s story takes a touching turn when, after a change in my work schedule left him alone for longer periods, he began to visit local shops, people’s homes, and most notably, a nearby care home. His presence there became so cherished that one of the residents, deeply missing him after his unfortunate accident, requested a special visit. The reunion between Chase and the resident, brought together in her wheelchair, was a profoundly emotional moment. This book is a tribute to the deep bond between humans and their feline companions, celebrating the unique personality of each cat and the indelible mark they leave on our hearts. Join us on this journey filled with laughter, challenges, and poignant memories, as we recount the unforgettable impact of Chase, Willow, Tiggy, and Barney.

But wait . . . is that a pink tail, or a dangling ribbon? A whiskery nose, or a spider’s legs? Kids will love spotting the pesky mouse throughout this sprightly picture book and will root for Clemmie to discover the mouse under her nose once and for all.

Book excerpt: We've all been there. Well, most of us. That childhood dream of the most magical place on earth. We've all dreamed of seeing the sparkling castle in real life and hugging our favorite characters. But what happens when that childhood dream really signifies something much more-an escape, a rising above the ashes? And then it's dashed against the rocks of uncertainty? Of poverty and hopelessness? In this engaging, reflective, emotional true story, Nathan Monk takes you through the real life journey of a hopeful father struggling to hold his family together in an intimidating world of poverty and homelessness. Villains and evil witches lie in wait, ready to prey on their victims, while supportive sidekicks and fairy godmothers save the day in this remarkable tale of a child who rose from living in parking lots to becoming a widely recognized advocate for the homeless. Written partially from his perspective as a child, Nathan ties these stories back to current issues of social justice and the need for reform in the way we address poverty in America. A perfect blend of fairytale and in-depth expose, you're invited on an intimate journey with Nathan and his family as his father attempts to follow through with his mythical promise of unifying his family, righting wrongs of the past, fighting against a clock as it quickly approaches midnight, and Chasing the Mouse. Overflowing with passion, this touching, needed story will inspire you to reach for your own dreams, knowing that no matter the obstacles, no matter the risk, dreams really can come true ... if you just believe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. Two main themes connect the papers on Japanese syntax collected in this volume: movements of noun phrases and case marking, although each in turn relates to other issues in syntax and semantics. These two themes can be traced back to my 1965 MIT dissertation. The problem of the so-called topic marker wa is a perennial problem in Japanese linguistics. I devoted Chapter 2 of my dissertation to the problem of wa. My primary concern there was transformational genera tive syntax. I was interested in the light that Chomsky'S new theory could shed on the understanding of Japanese sentence structure. I generalized the problem of deriving wa-phrases to the problem of deriving phrases accompanied by the quantifier-like particles mo, demo, sae as well as wa. These particles, mo, demo and sae may roughly be equated with a/so, or something like it and even, respectively, and are grouped together with wa under the name of huku-zyosi as a subcategory of particles in Kokugogaku, Japanese scholarship on Japanese grammar. This taxonomy itself is a straightforward consequence of distributional analysis, and does not require the mechanisms of transformational grammar. My transformational analysis of wa, and by extension, that of the other huku zyosi, consisted in formally relating the function of the post-nominal use of wa to that of the post-predicative use by means of what I called an attachment transformation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a unique fusion of two different research topics. One is related to the traditional mathematical problem of chases and escapes. The problem mainly deals with a situation where a chaser pursues an evader to analyze their trajectories and capture time. It dates back more than 300 years and has developed in various directions such as differential games. The other topic is the recently developing field of collective behavior, which investigates origins and properties of emergent behavior in groups of self-driving units. Applications include schools of fish, flocks of birds, and traffic jams. This book first reviews representative topics, both old and new, from these two areas. Then it presents the combined research topic of "group chase and escape", recently proposed by the authors. Although the combination is simple and straightforward, the book describes the emergence of rather intricate behavior, provoking the interest of readers for further developments and applications of related topics.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. Understanding Animation is a comprehensive introduction to animated film, from cartoons to computer animation. Paul Wells' insightful account of a critically neglected but increasingly popular medium: * explains the defining characteristics of animation as a cinematic form * outlines different models and methods which can be used to interpret and evaluate animated films * traces the development of animated film around the world, from Betty Boop to Wallace and Gromit. Part history, part theory, and part celebration, Understanding Animation includes: * notes towards a theory of animation * an explanation of animation's narrative strategies * an analyis of how comic events are constructed * a discussion of representation, focusing on gender and race * primary research on animation and audiences. Paul Wells' argument is illustrated with case studies, including Daffy Duck in Chuck Jones' Duck Amuck, Jan Svankmajer's Jabberwocky, Tex Avery's Little Rural Riding Hood and King Size Canary ', and Nick Park's Creature Comforts. Understanding Animation demonstrates that the animated film has much to tell us about ourselves, the cultures we live in, and our view of art and society.

The fourth edition of this text retains everything dance educators have loved in previous editions while providing significant updates and new material. What’s New in This Edition? New material in the text—which contains learning experiences for physical education, dance, and classroom settings and is geared toward K-12 students of all ability levels—includes the following: Two new chapters that feature 32 new learning experiences for popular, fitness, and social dances, as well as for folk and cultural dances based on traditional movements and songs from around the globe Instructional videos of teaching techniques, movements, and dances from the two new chapters Online resources, accessed through HKPropel, that include PowerPoint presentations, gradable assessments, and forms that can be used as is or adapted Other new material includes suggested answers to chapter-ending reflection questions; updates to discussions on dance and the whole-child education initiative; new material on how 21st-century skills promote creative thinking, collaboration, communication, global awareness, and self-direction; and a description of the link between dance and the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. Dance an Inherent Component of Education “This latest edition of Teaching Children Dance brings a new perspective focused on dance as an inherent component of a child’s education,” says coauthor Susan Flynn. “Since our last edition, educational issues have refocused on students gaining knowledge and skills that can be applied to all aspects of their lives. Dance is one mode for learning that involves using the body and the senses to gather information, communicate, and demonstrate conceptual understandings.” Book Organization The text is organized into two parts, with part I’s seven chapters providing the foundation for developing dance learning experiences and offering ideas for planning a yearlong program, a unit, or a single lesson. Part II contains two chapters of creative dance learning experiences and two chapters on choreographed learning experiences. Each learning experience includes learning outcomes; ideas for the introduction and warm-up, development, and culminating dance; variations and adaptations; and assessment suggestions that are directly linked to each outcome. Fun Learning for All Ability Levels Teaching Children Dance offers dance instructors insight into designing lessons for students of all skill levels, including those with disabilities, and provides a variety of teaching strategies, assessment tools, and instruction on effective demonstrations—all to make the learning experience fun and motivating for the dancers. “We’ve developed learning experiences that encourage creativity, positive social interaction, and motor skill development,” says Flynn. “Students view dance as a way to have fun. This opens the door for dance to be a welcomed activity in the school curriculum.” Note: A code for accessing HKPropel is not included with this ebook but may be purchased separately.
