Book excerpt: The introduction of suspension systems to mountain bikes began in the late 1980's and early 1990's. These suspensions created two types of mountain bikes; the hardtail and the full suspension mountain bike. However, designers of full suspension bikes must balance the need for pedaling efficiency, which calls for a stiff suspension, with comfort and trail contact, which calls for a soft suspension. This thesis presents experimental and theoretical results from the development of a rear suspension system that has been designed for a mountain bike. A magnetorheological (MR) damper is used to design a rear suspension system that can balance the need of ride comfort through shock absorption and performance characteristics such as handling and pedaling efficiency by using active control. Two control algorithms have been tested in this study – on/off control and proportional control. The damping was adjusted by setting the damper current to different levels in order to measure the effects of the change in response of the bike. The rear suspension system has been integrated into an existing bike frame and tested on a shaker table as well as a mountain trail. Shaker table testing demonstrates the effectiveness of the damper, while the trail testing indicates that the MR damper-based shock absorber can be used to implement different control algorithms. The shaker table and trail testing results indicate that active damping control can be implemented using an MR damper. Using the results of these experimental tests, a theoretical test was simulated using a mathematical model; which was used to represent the mountain bike mounted to the shaker table. The results were plotted using transmissibility, power spectrum density, and frequency mode shape plots which indicated three applicable natural frequencies near 5, 9, and 10 Hz, when applying the mountain bike, rear suspension system, and rider weight/distribution used for this experiment. Upon the analysis using MATLAB, the mathematical model was determined to correctly represent the overall dynamics of the bicycle pertaining to the sprung mass. Additional accelerometers will need to be placed throughout the bicycle to determine if the mathematical model correctly represented the overall dynamics of the bicycle as a whole.

Book excerpt: The aim of the present project was to quantify and compare differences in impact performance and damping effectiveness among various off-road bicycle suspension systems. Two experiments were conducted to compare suspensions. Fork impact performance was tested by measuring peak antero-posterior braking forces and impulses during impact with bumps of 6- and 10-cm height for five mountain bike suspension systems. These results were compared to a rigid fork condition. Comparisons among suspension systems showed small but significant differences in performance. While only marginal differences in peak force were found for the suspension conditions, more substantial differences in braking impulse were observed. Air-Oil design forks had the lowest braking impulse for the range of speeds and impact characteristics of this experiment. In another setting, an analysis of acceleration signals over a range of frequencies on two surface conditions (gravel and trail) was conducted to assess the damping effectiveness of the five suspension systems. The mountain bike was equipped with accelerometers mounted at the axle and frame. A spectral analysis of the signal was performed for each signal to provide a measure of fork effectiveness. Results showed that accelerations ranged from -33 to +40 g at the axle and from -13 to +13 g at the frame, while spectral analyses of the acceleration signals revealed two distinct frequency regions from 0 to 100 Hz and from 300 to 400 Hz. The various suspension systems were all effective in attenuating vibration over the first region. Vibration amplitudes at the frame were considerably less than at the axle for the suspension conditions while similar axle-frame vibrations were observed with the rigid fork. Lower frequency vibration amplitudes were typically greater on the trail than on gravel. In the frequency region between 300-400 Hz, the signal was attenuated at the frame for all conditions including the rigid fork. The quantification and comparison process of the various suspension forks using impulse provided an objective marker for performance, and allowed differentiation between various suspension conditions. Moreover, the effectiveness analysis through the use of accelerometers provided insight into the range of frequencies dampened by a suspension. The lower frequency range dampening suggested that effectiveness of a suspension fork can be quantified even though the experiment did not conclusively differentiate between the forks.

Book excerpt: A need for a cost effective, versatile and easy to use suspension component testing method has arisen, following the development of a four-state hydro-pneumatic semi-active spring-damper system. A method known as hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) was investigated, in particular its use and compatibility with tests involving physical systems previously HiL was used predominantly for Electronic Control Unit (ECU) testing. The suitability of HiL in the development of advanced suspension systems and their control systems, during which various vehicle models can be used, was determined. A first step in vehicle suspension design is estimating a desired spring and damper characteristic, and verifying that characteristic using software simulation. The models used during this step are usually low-order, simple models, which hampers quick development progress. To predict vehicle response before vehicle prototype completion, many researchers have attempted to use complex and advanced damper models to simulate the vehicle's dynamics, but these models all suffer from some drawback it is either based on empirical data, giving no indication of the physical parameters of the design sought: it may be overly complex, having many parameters and thus rendering software impractical: or it may be quick but based on the premise that there is no hysteresis in the damping character. It can be seen that an obvious answer exists use a physical commercially available or prototype damper in the software simulation instead of the mathematical model. In this way the suspension deflection, i.e. the true motion of the damper is used as excitation, and the true damper force is measured using a hydraulic actuator and load cell. The vehicle mass motions are simulated in a software environment. This is basically what HiL simulation does. The HiL method was verified by comparing HiL simulations and tests to globally accepted testing methods, employing widely-used vehicle models: linear single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) or quarter-car models were used. The HiL method was also compared to a non-linear physical system to verify that the method holds for real vehicle suspension geometries. This meant that HiL had to perform adequately at both ends of the suspension-testing spectrum base software and real system simulation. The comparison of the HiL and software/real system simulation was done using the Error Coefficient of Variance (ECOV) between the compared signals: this quantitative measure proved very sensitive and performed dubiously in the presence of signal offsets, phase lags and scaling errors, but remains a tangible, measurable parameter with which to compare signals. Visual confirmation was also obtained to back the ECOV values. It was found that even using a relatively low-force actuator, the HiL simulation results followed the software/real system responses well. Phase lags and DC offsets in the HiL simulation's measured signals (as well as the real systems responses) has an adverse effect on the performance of the HiL simulation. Special attention must thus be paid to the zeroing of equipment and the amount/type of filters in the system, as these affect the HiL results dramatically. In all, HiL was proven to be a versatile and easy to use alternative to conventional mass-based suspension testing.

The practical difficulty of field-testing during competition has played a role in this dearth of knowledge. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the physiology and bioenergetics of cross-country marathon (XCM) and 24 hour team relay (24XCT) mountain bike racing. Study One analysed the physiological characteristics of XCM competitors and compared them to data from studies in the literature for Olympic-distance cross-country (XCO) mountain bike competitors. The XCM participants had lower mean peak aerobic capacity (58.4 ± 6.3 mL" g-1" in-1), greater body mass (72.8 ± 6.7 kg) and estimated percentage body fat (10.4 ± 2.4%) compared to values reported for XCO competitors in the literature. Stature (1.77 ± 6.0 m) and normalised peak power output (5.5 ± 0.7 W" g-1) were comparable. These data suggest that specific physiological characteristics of XCM competitors differ from those of XCO competitors. Study Two quantified and described the exercise intensity during a XCM race by monitoring heart rate responses. The mean heart rate (150 ± 10 beats" in-1) for the duration of the race equated to 82 percent of maximum heart rate and did not differ significantly throughout the race (p = 0.33). The data indicated that the XCM race was of a high aerobic intensity. Prior to the competition the relationship between heart rate and O2peak for each participant was established during an incremental laboratory test. Energy expenditure was estimated by assigning 20.2 kJ to each litre of oxygen consumed. The mean rate of energy expenditure during the race was estimated to be 59.9 kJ" in-1. Furthermore, no anthropometric or physiological measures were correlated to race speed, indicating that other factors contribute to race performance. The third study was a laboratory-based investigation to determine whether physiological factors relevant to 24XCT racing change with time of day.
