Book Synopsis Studies in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Italian Sacred Music by : Jeffrey Kurtzman
Download or read book Studies in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Italian Sacred Music written by Jeffrey Kurtzman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he is often identified as a Monteverdi scholar (Approaches to Monteverdi: Aesthetic, Psychological, Analytical and Historical Studies, published in the Variorum series in 2013), the majority of Jeffrey Kurtzman’s work has focused on other sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian sacred music. Organized into three sections, part one begins with a chapter on the Monteverdi Mass and Vespers of 1610 which spotlights the other major work in Monteverdi’s first prominent sacred print, the Missa in illo tempore, followed by examples of Kurtzman’s work on the sacred music of other composers such as Giovanni Francesco Capello and Palestrina. The section concludes with a piece on polyphonic psalm structures in seventeenth-century Italian Office music. Part two includes pieces which explore the relationship between the standard clef set, the high clef set, specific Magnificat tones and sounding pitch in the Magnificats of Roman composers; the issue of polyphonic psalm antiphons and the question of vocal and instrumental substitutes for plainchant antiphons in the Vespers service; and the use of instruments in the performance of sacred music, demonstrating that the concertato style of the seventeenth century had its origins in the practice of substituting instruments for voices and doubling voices with instruments, thereby introducing multifaceted possibilities for varying sonorities through the course of a composition. Part 3 contains two articles: the first surveying various styles in the Office repertoire of the seventeenth-century based on the approximately 1500 prints of Italian Office music in Kurtzman’s and Anne Schnoebelen’s catalogue of Mass, Office and Holy Week Music Printed in Italy, 1516-1770. The second article, published for the first time in this volume, assesses the impact on Italian liturgical music of the Catholic reform of the second half of the sixteenth-century.

Book Synopsis A Karamazov Companion by : Victor Terras
Download or read book A Karamazov Companion written by Victor Terras and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text of The Brothers Karamazov is removed from English-speaking readers today not only by time but also by linguistic and cultural boundaries. Victor Terras's companion work provides readers with a richer understanding of the Dostoevsky novel as the expression of a philosophy and a work of art. In his introduction, Terras outlines the genesis, main ideas, and structural peculiarities of the novel as well as Dostoevsky's political, philosophical, and aesthetic stance. The detailed commentary takes the reader through the novel, clarifying aspects of Russian life, the novel's sociopolitical background, and a number of polemic issues. Terras identifies and explains hundreds of literary and biblical quotations and allusions. He discusses symbols, recurrent images, and structural stylistic patterns, including those lost in English translation.

Download or read book Our Lost Legacy written by John D. Garr and published by Golden Key Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We've been robbed!" These words of a Methodist bishop in Brazil, an Anglican leader in India, and a Pentecostal overseer in Africa expressed the sentiments of thousands of Christians around the world when they first discovered through the challenging teaching of Dr. John D. Garr the extent to which they have been deprived of the Hebrew heritage of their Christian faith. For the past nineteen centuries, millions of believers have been denied their biblical legacy, the riches of the Hebrew foundations of their faith. Christian Judaeophobia, anti-Judaism, and Antisemitism have conspired to rob them of the treasures of their inheritance. Our Lost Legacy presents selected essays and lectures in which Dr. Garr urges the church to recover its Hebrew heritage, its connection with the Jewish matrix from which it was birthed. These pages call Christians back to the Bible, to the roots of faith that enrich lives and equip believers to achieve greater maturity through a more complete knowledge of Jesus, our Jewish Lord. Our Lost Legacy presents these vivid images of Christianity's heritage in the Hebrew faith: Biblical Judaism: The Root of Christianity; Hold to God';s Unchanging Hand; Christ, Our Righteousness; Jewish Jesus or Cosmic Christ?; The Secret to Fulfilling the Law. As you read this volume, you'll simply be amazed at just how Jewish Christianity really is! And you'll be determined to recover your lost legacy in the Hebrew heritage of your faith.
Book Synopsis The Pursuit of Myth in the Poetry of Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan and John Forbes by : Duncan Hose
Download or read book The Pursuit of Myth in the Poetry of Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan and John Forbes written by Duncan Hose and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-04 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pursuit of Myth in the Poetry of Frank O'Hara, Ted Berrigan and John Forbes traces a tradition of revolutionary self-mythologising in the lives and works of Frank O’Hara, Ted Berrigan and John Forbes, as a significant trefoil in twentieth-century English language poetry. All three had untimely deaths, excited a collective homage, and developed cult followings that reverberate today. This book tracks the transmission of the poem as charm, the poet as charmer, and the reinstitution of troubadour erotics as a kind of social poetics. Starting with Orpheus, the book refreshes the myth of the poet as mythmaker, examining how myths of “self” and “nation” are regenerated for the twenty-first century and how persons-as-myths are made in community through coteries of artists and beyond. Duncan Bruce Hose’s critical vocabulary, with its nucleus of mythos, searches the edges of phenomenal enquiry, closing in on the work of “glamour”, “aura”, “charm”, “possession”, “phantasm”, the “daemonic”, and the logic of haunting in the continuing being of these three poets as “charismatic animals”.
