Book excerpt: There are many reasons to be curious about the way people learn, and the past several decades have seen an explosion of research that has important implications for individual learning, schooling, workforce training, and policy. In 2000, How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School: Expanded Edition was published and its influence has been wide and deep. The report summarized insights on the nature of learning in school-aged children; described principles for the design of effective learning environments; and provided examples of how that could be implemented in the classroom. Since then, researchers have continued to investigate the nature of learning and have generated new findings related to the neurological processes involved in learning, individual and cultural variability related to learning, and educational technologies. In addition to expanding scientific understanding of the mechanisms of learning and how the brain adapts throughout the lifespan, there have been important discoveries about influences on learning, particularly sociocultural factors and the structure of learning environments. How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures provides a much-needed update incorporating insights gained from this research over the past decade. The book expands on the foundation laid out in the 2000 report and takes an in-depth look at the constellation of influences that affect individual learning. How People Learn II will become an indispensable resource to understand learning throughout the lifespan for educators of students and adults.

Book excerpt: This study examines motivational factors and how they affect student achievement, as well as teacher and student perceptions of these factors in a STEM school. The focus of this research is to determine if there is an association between overall reported motivation and student achievement as measured by End of Course performance and Grade Point Average (GPA) in a STEM school. This study utilizes mixed-methods research and examines the MUSIC® Model of Motivation which educators use to assess motivation and study students' perceptions of their classes (Jones, 2017). This research investigates the factors in the MUSIC® Model of Motivation and the effect of motivational factors on student achievement and learning. The research suggests a correlation between the success factor and achievement as measured through state-mandated End of Course assessments (Ohio Department of Education, 2018). The results suggest the strongest correlation between motivation and achievement (End of Course) in American History. The research examines student and educator perceptions of motivational factors. Both educators and students perceive the caring factor to be the highest. Interest is the lowest scoring factor for students while empowerment is the lowest scoring factor for teachers. Educators summarize through interviews the role of the educator as a facilitator of learning and a motivator that combines the factors to engage students. Educators in this study strongly emphasize the importance of the caring factor in a school setting. They argue that this factor is crucial in the STEM school, which is a public school of choice. The research implements reflective practices through qualitative research questions based on the quantitative results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success in learning a foreign language is influenced by both affective and cognitive factors. One of the most widely accepted affective factors in foreign language learning is motivation. Motivation is the most used concept for explaining the failure or success of a language learner. Considering the significance of motivation in second language acquisition, this book investigated the effect of motivational factors on English achievement. The wider concluding argument of this book is that motivation, and its constructs are context dependent and therefore, any language learning context has its own unique motivational model. "Thank you for the summary of your research. It is very interesting." R. C. Gardner, Ph.D. Professor Emeritus Department of Psychology University of Western Ontario, "Hojat Jodai has done a very systematic research using the most interesting statistical analysis. I surmise that the study is good enough to be a source of several academic paper publications." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding student and teacher motivation and developing strategies to foster motivation for students at all levels of performance are essential to effective teaching. This text is designed to help prospective and practicing teachers achieve these goals. Its premise is that current research and theory about motivation offer hope and possibilities for educators —teachers, parents, coaches, and administrators—to enhance motivation for achievement. The orientation draws primarily on social-cognitive perspectives that have generated much research relevant to classroom practice. Ideal for any course that is dedicated to, or includes coverage of, motivation and achievement, the text focuses on two key roles teachers play in supporting and cultivating motivation in the classroom: establishing the classroom structure and instruction that provides the environment for optimal motivation, engagement, and learning; and helping students develop the tools that will enable them to be self-regulated learners and develop their potential. Pedagogical features aid the understanding of concepts and the application to practice: Strategy boxes present guidelines and strategies for using the various concepts. Exhibit boxes include forms for different purposes (for example, goal setting), examples of teacher beliefs and practices, and samples of student work. Reflection boxes stimulate readers’ thinking about motivational issues inherent in the topics, their experiences, and their beliefs. A motivational toolbox at the end of each chapter helps readers identify important points to think about, lingering questions, strategies to use now, and strategies to develop in the future. NEW IN THE THIRD EDITION Updated research and new topics are added throughout as warranted by current inquiry in the field. Chapters are reorganized to provide more coherence and to account for new findings. New and updated material is included on issues of educational reform, standards for achievement, and high-stakes testing, and on achievement goal theory, especially regarding performance goals and the distinction between performance-approach and performance-avoidance goals as relevant to classroom practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

Book excerpt: With a significant proportion of my students unmotivated to participate in class, learning, or school in general, I am curious about factors that can initiate change from this unmotivated state, and factors that help students maintain their motivation. This study used a survey of primarily open-ended questions to better understand students' current perceptions of academic success and factors impacting their personal motivation to achieve and/or maintain success in their academics. Specifically, this study addressed the following research questions 1) What do students consider their past year's levels of academic achievement to be? 2) What does academic success mean to students? 3) What factors contribute to students' Motivation to succeed in their core academics? 4) How do factors that affect student motivation for academic success compare across achievement and course levels? The findings suggest first that students primarily experience extrinsic motivation to participate and succeed academically. Secondly the strongest factor for student motivation is from family, with the second strongest motivational factor originating from teachers. Finally, the findings suggest that there are some significant differences in how students are affected by motivational factors across achievement and course levels. This has implications for teacher practice, and school policy in order to promote, encourage, and sustain the academic motivation of all students.
