Gardner's model identified two types of motivation: integral and instrumental, these different types of motivation will effect the individual learner in different ways and will in turn ultimately determine the success of acquisition.

Ellis (2008:75) states while aptitude describes the “cognitive abilities that underlie successful L2 acquisition, motivation involves the attitudes and affective states that influence the degree of effort that learners make to learn an L2”. So aptitude is a more or less stable component which the individual can not directly interfere with. Motivation on the other hand is a component that can change comparatively fast and can be altered by the learner himself. Gardner (2001) writes that motivation describes the driving force behind the effort of a learner. Motivation consists of three elements. The first element is “effort”. A more motivated learner will put more effort in his or her studies. Book excerpt: In order to establish a non-reductionistic and genetic L2 motivation theory based on individuals' unique histories, I investigated the trajectories of Korean ESL learner's second language (L2) learning motivation, from an Activity Theory (AT) perspective. To date, neither the psychometric tradition nor newer sociological approaches have fully investigated the dialectical nature of L2 motivation. Based on Vygotskian Sociocultural Theory and AT, I define L2 learning motivation as an L2 learner's realization of the personal significance of an L2-related activity, resulting from the learner's sense of participation in L2 activity systems. Over a period of 12 months, I collected data from 10 Koreans who had recently arrived in Toronto: five ESL visa students and five immigrants. To highlight their paths of motivational development, I focused on four participants who showed similarities in age, previous educational background, and work experience. I collected data using five methods: participant background profiles, semi-structured interviews, L2 learning autobiographies, class observations, and photo-cued recall tasks. Of these methods, interviews received most of my attention, since I conducted them monthly. Eight motivational components emerged out of a series of NVivo analyses. The findings of this thesis imply that the quality of L2 interaction is equally important as the quantity in creating and maintaining L2 learning motivation, and that interviews are not only a research tool but also a learning tool for enhancing learners' metacognitive awareness. I argue that (a) needs, motives, and motivation should be differentiated within an AT perspective, (b) motivation is the transformation of a motive integrated with specific, concrete goals and a sense of participation, (c) demotivation is the gradual disintegration of motive, goal, and sense of participation, whereas amotivation is the total disintegration of the above three elements, (d) L2 learners' beliefs may play a crucial role as mediational tools in activity systems, and (e) the interpretation of participants' data cannot solely depend on its face value but requires close reference to each participant's unique L2 learning history.

Book excerpt: This study examined the motivation for learning English, the amount of contact with English, and length of residence in the target language area that affects Korean graduate students' English pragmatic skills studying at Texas A & M University in the U.S. The study attempted to account for differential pragmatic development among 50 graduate-level Korean students in a target speech community in regards to functions of their level of motivation, amount of contact with English, as well as length of residence in the target language community. Compared to other studies of second-language acquisition (SLA) which have examined variation among individuals with respect to L2 language learning for quite some time, there has been relatively little inquiry into how second language learners acquire L2 pragmatics and which factors affect learners' acquisition of L2 pragmatics. Based on the need for more research on the individual difference factors that affect developmental outcomes in L2 pragmatics, the following research questions were investigated: 1) How are differences in the Korean ESL learners' degree of motivation related with their achievement of pragmatic competence? 2) How is the reported amount of contact with English related with the Korean ESL learners' pragmatic competence? 3) How are differences in the Korean ESL learners' length of residence related with their achievement of pragmatic competence? 4) To what extent does student motivation relate to the likelihood of pursuing contact with English? The data for the present study were collected using three types of elicitation instruments: a written background questionnaire, a discourse completion test, and the mini- Attitude/Motivation Test Battery. Analyses in the present study proceeded in three stages: descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, and multiple regressions. The findings of the study provided that (a) the levels of motivation examined demonstrated a positive and moderate relationship to the Korean ESL learners' L2 pragmatic competence; (b) overall, the amount of L2 contact appeared to have only a weak and insignificant impact on the participants' pragmatic competence; (c) despite (b), one exception was that productive, more interactive type of language contact moderately influenced the participants' level of pragmatic competence; (d) the participants' length of residence moderately influenced the participants' level of pragmatic competence; and (e) the participants' level of motivation moderately affected their likelihood of pursuing contact with English.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the ways that advanced speakers of Korean as a second language perceive, use and learn the complexities of the Korean honorifics system. Despite their advanced proficiency in Korean, the study shows that the honorifics use of these speakers diverges in crucial ways from native speaker norms. It is argued that, rather than reflecting the language competence of these speakers as such, this usage is linked to questions of the identity of language learners and foreigners in Korean society. In addition, it shows the influence of conflicting ideologies regarding the meaning of politeness . This argument is backed up by rich data collected through mixed methods (discourse completion tests, role-plays, natural interactions, introspective interviews), allowing for a detailed picture of how the honorifics use of second language speakers emerges in context. The book concludes by discussing the implications of the study for politeness research, interlanguage pragmatics and language pedagogy."
