Book excerpt: Multi-Frame Motion-Compensated Prediction for Video Transmission presents a comprehensive description of a new technique in video coding and transmission. The work presented in the book has had a very strong impact on video coding standards and will be of interest to practicing engineers and researchers as well as academics. The multi-frame technique and the Lagrangian coder control have been adopted by the ITU-T as an integral part of the well known H.263 standard and are were adopted in the ongoing H.26L project of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group. This work will interest researchers and students in the field of video coding and transmission. Moreover, engineers in the field will also be interested since an integral part of the well known H.263 standard is based on the presented material.

It investigates linearly combined motion comp- sated signals and generalizes the well known superposition for bidirectional prediction in B-pictures. The number of superimposed signals and the sel- tion of reference pictures will be important aspects of the discussion. The application oriented part of the book employs this concept to the well known ITU-T Recommendation H.263 and continues with the improvements by superimposed motion-compensated signals for the emerging ITU-T R- ommendation H.264 and ISO/IEC MPEG-4 (Part 10). In addition, it discusses a new approach for wavelet-based video coding. This technology is currently investigated by MPEG to develop a new video compression standard for the mid-term future.

Multiple reference frame motion compensation is an extension of motion compensation that exploits temporal correlation over a longer time scale. Devised mainly for increasing compression efficiency, it exhibits useful properties such as enhanced error resilience and error concealment. Multiple Reference Motion Compensation: A Tutorial Introduction and Survey explores different aspects of multiple reference frame motion compensation, including multihypothesis prediction, global motion prediction, improved error resilience and concealment for multiple references, and algorithms for fast motion estimation in the context of multiple reference frame video encoders

Book excerpt: Digital Video offers comprehensive coverage of the MPEG-2 audio/visual digital compression standard. The treatment includes the specifics needed to implement an MPEG-2 Decoder, including the syntax and semantics of the coded bitstreams. Since the MPEG-2 Encoders are not specified by the standard, and are actually closely held secrets of many vendors, the book only outlines the fundamentals of encoder design and algorithm optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need of video compression in the modern age of visual communication cannot be over-emphasized. This monograph will provide useful information to the postgraduate students and researchers who wish to work in the domain of VLSI design for video processing applications. In this book, one can find an in-depth discussion of several motion estimation algorithms and their VLSI implementation as conceived and developed by the authors. It records an account of research done involving fast three step search, successive elimination, one-bit transformation and its effective combination with diamond search and dynamic pixel truncation techniques. Two appendices provide a number of instances of proof of concept through Matlab and Verilog program segments. In this aspect, the book can be considered as first of its kind. The architectures have been developed with an eye to their applicability in everyday low-power handheld appliances including video camcorders and smartphones.

The authors dissect complicated specifications and present material in a way that gets readers quickly up to speed by describing video compression algorithms succinctly, without going to the mathematical details and technical specifications. For accelerated learning, hybrid codec structure, inter- and intra- prediction techniques in MPEG-4, H.264/AVC, and HEVC are discussed together. In addition, the latest research in the fast encoder design for the HEVC and H.264/AVC is also included.

Book excerpt: In video coding, motion compensation prediction provides significant increases in overall compression efficiency. The prediction residuals are typically treated as images and compressed by applying two-dimensional transforms such as the two-dimensional discrete cosine transform (2D-DCT). Previous work has found that the use of direction-adaptive one-dimensional discrete cosine transforms (1D-DCTs) in coding motion compensation residuals can provide significant additional bitrate savings. However, this requires optimization over all of the available transforms to minimize the overall bitrate, which can be expensive in terms of time and computation. In this thesis, we examine the use of only the horizontal and vertical 1D-DCTs in addition to the 2D-DCT for coding motion compensation residuals. By reducing the number of available transforms, the amount of required computation decreases significantly, with a potential cost in performance. We perform experiments using a modified H.264/AVC codec to compare the performance of using different sets of available transforms. The results indicate that for typical applications of video coding, most of the performance benefit from using directional 1D-DCTs can be retained by keeping only the horizontal and vertical 1D-DCTs.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal in video compression is to remove the redundancy in a video sequence while preserving its fidelity. Motion estimation can significantly improve video coding efficiency by reducing temporal redundancy. In this thesis we focus on new methods for motion estimation with applications in low complexity video compression. In this thesis we study the performance of low complexity video coding. Theoretical rate-distortion performance is derived and evaluated for both low complexity video coding and conventional motion-compensated prediction (MCP) based video coding. Based on our analysis of sub-pixel and multi-reference motion search methods used to improve low complexity video coding efficiency, we propose a new refined side motion estimation method to better extract motion information at the video decoder. Motion side estimation methods in general assume a motion model in a video sequence and use computationally intensive motion search. In this thesis we propose a novel side information estimation method based on universal prediction. Our method does not assume an underlying motion model. Instead, it makes predictions based on its observation of the past video information. The experimental results show that this new method can significantly reduce the computational complexity while achieving comparable performance for many video sequences. Lossy image and video compression is often accompanied by annoying artifacts. In this thesis we present a transform domain Markov Random Field model to address the artifact reduction. We present two methods, which we denote as TD-MRF and TSD-MRF, based on this model. We show by objective and subjective comparisons that transform domain post processing methods can substantially reduce the computational complexity compared with conventional spatial domain method and still achieve significant artifact reduction.
