Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 by a Serbian nationalist has set off a crisis in Europe. Since the Congress of Vienna in 1815, peace had largely prevailed among the Great Powers, preserved through international conferences and a delicate balance of power. Now, however, interlocking alliances are threatening to plunge Europe into war, as Austria-Hungry is threatening war against Serbia. Germany is allied with Austria-Hungary, while Russia views itself as the protector of Serbia. Britain is torn between fear of a German victory and a Russian one. France supports Russia but also needs Britain on its side. Can war be avoided one more time? Europe on the Brink plunges students into the July Crisis as representatives of the European powers. What choices will they make?

As victory for the Grand Alliance draws close, the leaders of Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States gather at Yalta, a resort town on the Black Sea, for the most important summit meeting of the war. Can the great powers finalize their plans for a new world order, or will their often antagonistic ideologies prevent them from forging a lasting peace? Restoring the World immerses students in the Yalta Conference as they take on the roles of Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, as well as the members of their military and diplomatic delegations. They all want peace, but what kind of peace will they create?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Fiction. Photography. Art. HOME FOR AN HOUR began on Saturday, February 15, 2014 when seven couples each spent an hour alone in Adam Moser's Greensboro, NC apartment. At the start of each hour, Sarah Martin took the couple's portrait in the space, and then left them, unsupervised and unsurveilled. Across the street, at a tailgating party for the audience of this unseen performance, Jacob Paul wrote an imagined account of the unseen action inside. At the hour's end, Martin returned to shoot an exit portrait, after which the couple joined the party outside to hand off the keys. While awaiting the next couple, Martin photographed the apartment's evolution. On the occasion of the December 2014 exhibition of the photographs at Phillips Gallery, Moser has collected the photographs and stories into this limited edition art book.
