Book excerpt: The beloved horror comic magazine series MONSTERS ATTACK! featured some of the world's greatest comic creators. Many of them were veterans of the fabled EC Comics, Atlas Comics (later Marvel Comics), Charlton Comics and Warren Publishing, including John Severin, Steve Ditko, Alex Toth, Gray Morrow, Gene Colan and Pat Boyette. In the late 1980s, Mort Todd was Editor-in-Chief of the infamous Cracked magazine and already working with many of the living legends of the comic industry. A fan of creature culture since a kid, Mort was inspired to put out a horror magazine along the lines of Tales from the Crypt, Creepy and Famous Monsters with the awesome talent he assembled. He had launched an incredibly popular humor magazine called Cracked Monster Party, which indicated a 'serious' monster magazine might be successful as well... and it was! Mort wrote many of the stories and as editor crafted the look of the book, a homage to his misspent youth! Since then, many comic fans have requested that Mort put together a collected edition and now the time is as ripe as a rotted zombie! The series is in two volumes with notes about the creation of these comics by editor/writer/artist Mort Todd. There are also rare behind-the-scenes photos, art and other supplemental fun!Volume 2 features the following psychotic episodes: Face It by Steve Ditko; Wake of the Monster by Pat Boyette; The Daemon by John Arcudi & Gene Colan; Tag Yer Ded by Mort Todd & John Severin; Illusion by Steve Ditko, Circulation: Zero by Charles E. Hall & Gray Morrow; A Job Well Done by Richard Meyers & Alex Toth; The Creator by Steve Ditko PLUS an unpublished story Transformation Flying by Charles E. Hall & John Severin, along with pin-ups and articles Jason's Body Count (with a wild pictograph of who died and how in the Friday the 13th movies), Akira, Godzilla King of the Monsters, a Sam Raimi Interview and The Frankenstein Legend plus more terroriffic stuff!

The book is a treasure trove of rare humor comics mostly unseen for over 30 years from the pages of Mad's #1 competitor, Cracked magazine. There are TV and movie parodies, tons of celebrities, along with satire on current events, trends and culture of the era. Mark Arnold provides an informative introduction to The Comedy of John Severin and features an afterword by Mort Todd reflecting on Severin and the magazine's legacy. The Comedy of John Severin is a 107 page volume in glorious vintage black & white! The book features a gorgeous array of their work, showcasing the many mediums he worked in, from pen and ink, wash, guoache, duoshade paper, zipatone and color paintings as they applied it to tweaking a variety of amusing topics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines imposed to placate public concern over gory and horrific comic book content, effectively banning genuine horror comics. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code's narrow confines. With the 1964 Creepy #1 from Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival continuing into the early 21st century, an important step in the maturation of the horror genre within the comics field as a whole. This generously illustrated work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror comics that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. With a catalog of original magazines, complete credits and insightful analysis, it highlights an important but overlooked period in the history of comics.

From a start in 1947 at the Simon & Kirby shop, he co-created the legendary Western strip American Eagle with Will Elder, and became an EC Comics mainstay, working with Harvey Kurtzman on Mad and Two-Fisted Tales. In addition to a 40+ year association with Cracked magazine, his pivotal Marvel Comics work included an extended run inking Herb Trimpe on The Hulk, and teaming with sister Marie Severin to create the classic comics version of King Kull. Throughout his storied career, he freelanced for every major publisher, and remained a workhorse up till his final Dark Horse mini-series at age 90. Included in this volume is a special "American Eagle" section, an eye-popping art gallery, and extensive personal photos and artifacts (including WWII "Victory Mail" cartoons and handmade greeting cards for his family). Also featured are commentary from over 25 peers gathered just for this book, including Neal Adams, Richard Corben, John Byrne, Russ Heath, Walter Simonson, and many others. Written by Greg Biga and multiple Eisner Award-winner Jon B. Cooke, with an introduction by Howard Chaykin, Foreword by Mort Todd, and Afterword by Chuck Dixon, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centennial of the two-fisted artist's birth!
