Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphometric assessments have been useful in describing subdivisions in Peromyscus species including P. pectoralis, P. trueii, and P. boylii. Peromyscus leucopus, the white-footed deer mouse, is divided into two independent chromosomal races that come into contact forming a zone of intergradation in central Oklahoma. This study documents the morphometric data of specimens ranging the 32 km transect compared with the cytotypic evidence obtained from earlier studies. Cranial measurements were obtained from 84 animals collected from six localities spanning the hybrid zone. Measurements were subjected to statistical analysis including multiple variance, principle component, and phenetic analyses. A sharply defined differentiation of the subdivision in P. leucopus, as based on genetic and chromosomal data, is not evident in a morphometric assessment across the zone of contact. As such, morphometric tools are not sufficiently sensitive to utilize preexisting specimens in systematic collections as a means to further define zones of contact across the range of the species.

Download or read book Morphometrics and Ecology of Peromyscus Gossypinus in Missouri written by Carlye C. Banks and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cotton mouse (Peromyscus gossypinus) is a threatened species found in bottomland forests and swamps in southeastern Missouri. Basic biological information of this species was unknown in Missouri. We examined morphological characteristics that distinguish it from the white-footed mouse (P. leucopus). Trapping data from Donaldson Point Conservation Area and Wolf Bayou Conservation Area in southern Missouri were combined with historical data from MANIS and universities in order to determine morphological characteristics which best differentiate between Peromyscus gossypinus and P. leucopus. Trapping occurred at both Conservation Areas for three consecutive nights using Sherman-live traps. Our study provided baseline morphological data on this species and shows their current distribution for the two Conservation Areas. Our study also determined if morphological characteristics are reliable in differentiating between cotton mice and white-footed mice. This information provided key morphological characteristics to use for a more accurate population estimate for the cotton mouse.
