Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights the richness of studies focusing on the evolutionary dynamics of wild populations. It shows the diversity of organisms and approaches that can be used to reveal and understand empirical patterns, with-often, but not always-the goal of improving the long-term conservation of wild populations. This diversity reflects the diversity of questions that occupy evolutionary biologists working in wild populations, which go from revealing their global (epi)genetic and phenotypic structure at different spatial and temporal scales to the search of the inherited bases of ecologically relevant phenotypic traits. This volume should be an important contribution to the field because firstly, papers selected in this issue provide answers to timely questions in evolutionary biology. Secondly, it proves that much has to be explored to understand the causes and consequences of evolutionary dynamics of wild populations, and hence that scientists still have to put effort into the study of wild populations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acanthocephalans, or spiny-headed worms, are endoparasites found in almost all marine, freshwater and terrestrial systems. They infect a huge range of definitive and intermediate hosts during their life cycles, including both vertebrates and arthropods. This volume, first published in 2006, examines the distribution and abundance of the Acanthocephala, and uses this ecological information to reveal the group's enormous survival success. It discusses how the acanthocephalans have evolved differently to all other groups of parasites, and represent a distinct and alternative pathway of parasite evolution and host parasite-interactions. Written for graduate students and researchers in parasitology, ecology and zoology or anyone interested in reading about parasite ecology and evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dipteran family Chironomidae is the most widely distributed and frequently the most abundant group of insects in freshwater, with rep resentatives in both terrestrial and marine environments. A very wide range of gradients of temperature, pH, oxygen concentration, salinity, current velocity, depth, productivity, altitude and latitude have been exploited, by at least some chironomid species, and in grossly polluted environments chironomids may be the only insects present. The ability to exist in such a wide range of conditions has been achieved largely by behavioural and physiological adaptations with relatively slight morphological changes. It has been estimated that the number of species world-wide may be as high as 15000. This high species diversity has been attributed to the antiquity of the family, relatively low vagility leading to isolation, and evolutionary plasticity. In many aquatic ecosystems the number of chironomid species present may account for at least 50% of the total macroinvertebrate species recorded. This species richness, wide distribution and tolerance to adverse conditions has meant that the group is frequently recorded in ecological studies but taxonomic difficulties have in the past prevented non-specialist identification beyond family or subfamily level. Recent works, including genetic studies, have meant that the family is receiving much more attention globally.

The juxtaposition of authors representing fields of research emphasizes the many common problems facing intracellular parasites and the hosts that harbor them. In addition, numerous illustrations of how different parasites and host attempt to solve these problems in different ways are provided. The book includes one or more chapters on Bdellovibrio, Chlamydia, Rickettsia, Coxiella, Legionella, Shigellae, Mycobacterium, Microsporidium, Plasmodium, and Toxoplasma. The authors frequently speculate and generalize on the subject matter discussed.

Book excerpt: Volume two of this series is a comprehensive review of the current knowledge of microsporidian taxonomy. It is a supplement to volume one that deals with the biology of the microsporidia. Together, they provide the broadest possible coverage of this group of microorganisms that has received considerable attention because of their importance in invertebrate and vertebrate disease. Volume two contains the most complete published list of micro sporidian species, outlines their classification and phylogeny, and provides a zoological distribution. The driving force in compiling all of this information was Victor Sprague of the University of Maryland. Dr. Sprague has spent his scientific career researching many different facets of micro sporidia and no other person is regarded as expert as he. Certainly, the wealth of information contgined herein cannot be found elsewhere in any single coverage. Therefore, the publi cation of Volumes one and two sets a milestone for microspori diology and it is our hope that the readers of these two volumes will share the enthusiasm of the authors and contributors and will reap rich reward from their unique and profound insight.
