This book was released on 1973 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maclurolyra tecta, a new genus of grasses from Panama, is described. Features of its leaf anatomy and epidermis, seedlings, inflorescence morphology, floral structure, and cytology, indicate that it is a member of the tribe Olyreae of the subfamily Bambusoideae. A description is given of the "bambusoid" type of leaf anatomy, as well as comments on the vascular bundle sheaths in grasses, and chloroplast structure and photosynthetic pathways as new criteria in grass taxonomy. The phylogenetic position of Maclurolyra is discussed and a list of genera comprising the Bambusoideae is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume features the studied anatomical details of different parts of 100 wild grass species and provides a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge. Each of the three sections of the volume (leaf grass, culm, and caryopses) discusses and illustrates the diagnostic histological features, along with statistical analyses on the quantitative and qualitative data. The descriptions of these grasses, particularly those growing in the grasslands of the Panchmahal and Dahod districts of India, are supplemented with microphotographs and keys for the taxa concentrate upon diagnostic characters above the rank of genus, which will be helpful for the easy identification of the grasses, even in their vegetative stages before flowering. The cluster analysis uses the statistical analysis program Minitab for each part on the basis of the diagnostic features. In this volume, readers will be able to easily identify the grass species based on the anatomical features described here. The volume will be of great interest both to grass specialists and to generalists seeking state-of-the-art information on the diversity of grasses, the most ecologically and economically important of the families of flowering plants.

Book Synopsis The Bamboos of the World by : D. Ohrnberger
Download or read book The Bamboos of the World written by D. Ohrnberger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-01-29 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bamboos constitute one of a few select categories of plants which are taxonomically related, very rich in species and of vital economic and ecological importance. Since the early 20th century the accepted number of species of bamboos, world wide, has tripled. However, until now information was scattered through numerous, often not easily available publications. The Bamboos of the World, is the first comprehensive (taxonomic as well as horticultural) reference work that provides basic information on bamboos world wide, whether they are wild or cultivated, well-known or rather unknown. The work, based on bamboo literature, facilitates access to further data by citation and a comprehensive bibliography. Among the main data included are botanical names with synonyms, and geographical distribution of genera and species, varieties with their distinctive characters, common bamboo names, plant introductions to the West, plant size and uses. The distribution of genera is mapped. The Bamboos of the World presents a wealth of essential information in an accessible and structured manner. It gives the opportunity to check under what names, and where, relevant information on any bamboo can be found. For the researcher with management and development interests it provides a convenient means of basing bamboo resource on a sound understanding of generic and species relationships, with names that appear in earlier literature put into context. The work should prove to be invaluable for those interested in the morphology, taxonomy, distribution and cultivation of bamboos. It should support botanical, forestry, horticultural and ecological research, training and resource management.
Book Synopsis Bamboo for Sustainable Development by : Kumar
Download or read book Bamboo for Sustainable Development written by Kumar and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 943 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bamboo is a plant that occurs over much of the World. It is probable that billions of the World’s population see, eat and touch bamboo every day. Bamboo contributes significantly to the income generation of many poor farmers. Yet it is an “orphan” crop – largely ignored by the main landholding agencies – forestry and agriculture. This volume contains most of the papers presented at the joint Fifthth International Bamboo Congress and Sixth International Bamboo Workshop held in San José, Costa Rica, 1998, organized by the International Bamboo Association (IBA) and INBAR. The book is divided into four parts: Bamboo Resources and Socio-economics; Bamboo Propagation and Management; Bamboo Engineering and Construction; Bamboo Design and Utilization. The topics covered include varied aspects of bamboo, such as: from bamboo resources of Mexico to bamboos of Ethiopia; from bamboo afforestation of a mined area to bamboo as a food and fiber alternative in an island; from bamboo drippers to bamboo wheelchairs; from teaching architecture with bamboo to an international building code for bamboo; from silviculture of Guadua bamboo to flowering of Moso bamboo; and many more. This publication serves to highlight the usefulness of bamboo in aiding developing countries in their sustainable social, economic and environmental development.
