Book excerpt: Acne vulgaris is an extraordinarily common, worldwide dis ease. Some see the disorder as merely cosmetic. Nonetheless, few skin diseases cause as much physical and psychological misery as this scourge of adolescence. Dermatologists of course have more than a passing familiar ity with acne vulgaris. Recognition is easy but there is still an extraordinary amount of controversy concerning causa tive factors and the best modes of treatment. Recent studies have brought forth some important findings about which practicing physicians know too little. This volume" ACNE: MORPHOGENESIS AND TREAT MENT" is a surprising book. What features make it so unique? This is the first complete account of the great diver sity of clinical manifestations. Moreover, gross morphology is coordinated with a thorough microscopic analysis of evolu tion of the disease. The material is presented in a readable and stimulating way. References are limited because they have been carefully selected. The authors emphasize that this richly illustrated work is intended for physicians who care for acne patients. Accord ingly, this is above all a practical treatise to assist doctors to diagnose and treat acne, and not only acne vulgaris but all the species of acne. This work is an overview of the entire acne problem with contributions from bacteriology, endocrinology, physiology, anatomy, immunology, cellular kinetics, and experimental acne. Above all it concludes with an optimistic presentation of therapeutic strategies which make it possible for the in formed physician to control the abominable effects of this distressing disorder.

Book excerpt: A consummate classic with a fresh approach to pediatric dermatology Children ́s skin is different. Maturation affects the epidermal barrier, the cutaneous microbiome, adnexal structures, vasculature, and transcutaneous absorption of drugs. The immature skin is more susceptible to pathogens and environmental disruption. Many genetic disorders are either present at birth or manifest early in childhood. Skin diseases thus present differently in children than in adults. Pediatric dermatology has seen significant advances over the last decade, particularly in the field of molecular genetics research, which has furthered our understanding of the pathogenesis of many skin diseases and the development of new approaches to treatment. This fourth edition of the Harper classic provides state-of-the-art information on all aspects of skin disease in children. It covers the diagnosis and treatment of all conditions - both common and rare - with a consistently evidence-based approach. Existing content has been refreshed and fully updated to reflect emerging thinking and to incorporate the latest in research and clinical data - especially at the genetic level. This new fourth edition includes: Greater focus on the genetics behind skin disease, including new genes/genodermatoses, progress in genetic analysis, and stem cell transplants Increased coverage of lasers and other technologies used to treat skin disease More summary tables, learning points, tables of differential diagnosis, and clinical algorithms for diagnosis and management Additional online features, including patient information links and multiple choice questions Harper's Textbook of Pediatric Dermatology delivers crucial clinical insights and up-to-date research information that spans the breadth of the field. As the most comprehensive reference book on this subject available, this revised fourth edition will support and guide the daily practice of both dermatologists and pediatricians across the world.

This book brings together, for the first time, expert researchers working on a variety of branching systems to present a state-of-the-art view of the mechanisms that control branching morphogenesis. Systems considered range from single cells, to blood vessel and drainage duct systems to entire body plans, and approaches range from observation through experiment to detailed biophysical modelling. The result is an integrated overview of branching.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.

Indeed recent medical advances in laboratory culture of these cells for use as skin grafts in cases of severe burns or ulceration owe much of their success to this very plasticity. Drawing upon a wide range of international expertise the various interconnected aspects of cell structure, composition and function are laid out in this volume, providing a comprehensive dossier of the keratinocyte and its biological significance."--Pub. desc.

Mechanobiology: Exploitation for Medical Benefit presents a comprehensive overview of principles of mechanobiology, highlighting the extent to which biological tissues are exposed to the mechanical environment, demonstrating the importance of the mechanical environment in living systems, and critically reviewing the latest experimental procedures in this emerging field. Featuring contributions from several top experts in the field, chapters begin with an introduction to fundamental mechanobiological principles; and then proceed to explore the relationship of this extensive force in nature to tissues of musculoskeletal systems, heart and lung vasculature, the kidney glomerulus, and cutaneous tissues. Examples of some current experimental models are presented conveying relevant aspects of mechanobiology, highlighting emerging trends and promising avenues of research in the development of innovative therapies. Timely and important, Mechanobiology: Exploitation for Medical Benefit offers illuminating insights into an emerging field that has the potential to revolutionise our comprehension of appropriate cell biology and the future of biomedical research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because skin blisters are the initial manifestation of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), patients invariably present to the dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment. However, EB is a systemic disease whose management requires input from clinicians in virtually all fields of medicine, including pediatri cians, surgeons, dentists, gastroenterologists, hematologists, otorhinolaryn gologists, dietitians, and physical therapists, to name a few. Because EB is a rare disease, few clinicians are familiar with it, and many recoil at the pros pect of caring for individuals covered with blisters caused by a disease they know little about. For patients, insult is thus added to injury and they feel abandoned, neglected, and frustrated. One way to remedy this deplorable situation is to provide clinicians with a compact source of information de tailing the principles of EB diagnosis and treatment. This text seeks to fulfill this role. From 1986-1991, The Rockefeller University Hospital has been the co ordinating center of the National EB Registry. Supported by The National Institutes of Health, this Registry consists of four university centers* commit ted to collecting clinical data concerning diagnosis, treatment, and epidemio logy on all American EB patients. As of April 1992, nearly 1,799 EB patients have enrolled nationwide. The Registry is now in its second five-year phase of operation.
