Book excerpt: Most beginner songbooks aren't especially inspiring for pianists who are just getting started. Just because you are a beginner doesn't mean you don't want to make beautiful and moving music! This book allows beginners and early intermediate students to play songs that are interesting, emotional, jazzy, fun and engaging. Whether children or adults, pianists find themselves LOVING to play these songs and feeling like real musical artists, not just someone who can play "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and other simple melodies that lack rich musical textures and emotions. From songs that can be played by students in early level books to pieces that will be enjoyed by students in their second and third year of studies, "Looks Easy, Sounds Hard" will be a well-loved companion to your musical studies. Julie has recorded all of the songs from Looks Easy, Sounds Hard and put them on YouTube so that students can hear what they will sound like with practice. The information about how to watch/listen to the videos is at the bottom of each song. More books by Julie Hanney coming soon: Looks Easy, Sounds Hard - Duets Looks Easy, Sounds Hard - Jazzy Tunes Looks Easy, Sounds Hard - Classical Melodies Looks Easy, Sounds Hard - How to Write Your Own Songs Looks Easy, Sounds Hard - For Intermediate Pianists About the Composer: Julie Hanney is a performer, teacher, music director and published composer of works for many different instruments, including several for choir and piano that were published under her previous name, Julie Wheeler. She received a B.A. in Music from the University of Oregon where she studied piano with Victor Steinhardt. She also did graduate studies in composition with Dr. Robert Kyr. Julie maintains a private piano teaching studio and has released two solo piano albums: "Painting in Sound" and "A Peace-Filled Christmas." She loves inspiring her students of all ages to truly enjoy playing the piano. Expressing yourself through music is one of the great joys on earth, and it is Julie's hope that "Looks Easy, Sounds Hard" will inspire people young and old to play with freedom, passion, joy and creativity. To learn more about upcoming books, albums, concerts and projects, or to listen to Julie's solo piano albums please visit: www.juliehanneypiano.com. Julie's albums are also available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, YouTube and other streaming services. Her CDs can be purchased in physical and digital formats through the CD Baby Store or on Amazon.com. Notes from Julie Hanney about Looks Easy, Sounds Hard: - The look on a musician's face when they begin making "real music" that sounds good to them - this is the motivation behind Looks Easy, Sounds Hard. In the first year or two of lessons most of the songs in beginning books aren't particularly inspiring or beautiful. "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" and "Yankee Doodle" are classics, but students of all ages yearn to play music that is intriguing, expressive, jazzy and/or sounds like music they would hear in a movie. The songs in this book fit the bill with a variety of moods and genres, each one accessible to beginning students.I hope you enjoy playing these songs and that they inspire you to play with joy, play often and share your musical gifts with the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) was an English novelist known principally for her five major novels which interpret, critique and comment upon the life of the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Her most highly praised novel during her own lifetime was Pride and Prejudice which was her second published novel. Her plots often reflect upon the dependence of women on marriage in the pursuit of favorable social standing and economic security. Austen's main novels are rarely out of print today though they were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame with only a few glancing reviews during her lifetime. A significant transition in her posthumous reputation as an author occurred in 1869, fifty-two years after her death, when her nephew published A Memoir of Jane Austen which effectively introduced her to a wider public and reading audience. Austen's most successful novel in her own lifetime was Pride and Prejudice which went through two editions during her own life. Her third published novel was Mansfield Park which was largely overlooked by the professional reviewers though it was a great success with the public still within her lifetime. All five of her major novels were published for the first time between 1811 and 1818. From 1811 until 1816, with the premiere publication of Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1815), she achieved success as a published writer. She wrote two additional novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1818, and began another one, which was eventually titled Sanditon, but died before completing it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1939, countless would-be readers of "Finnegans Wake" - James Joyce's masterwork, which consumed a third of his life - have given up after a few pages, dismissing it as a "perverse triumph of the unintelligible." In 1944, a young professor of mythology and literature named Joseph Campbell, working with Henry Morton Robinson, wrote the first "key" or guide to entering the fascinating, disturbing, marvelously rich world of "Finnegans Wake." The authors break down Joyce's "unintelligible" book page by page, stripping the text of much of its obscurity and serving up thoughtful interpretations via footnotes and bracketed commentary. They outline the book's basic action, and then simplify -- and clarify -- its complex web of images and allusions. "A Skeleton Key to Finnegans Wake" is the latest addition to the "Collected Works of Joseph Campbell" series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At risk of life and reputation, the reform journalist W. T. Stead (1849-1912) exposed child vice and white slavery in London and established age 16 for statutory rape. Concluding the 1914 Portrait, Joyce saluted the “Old father, old artificer, stand me now and ever in good stead” and set the path of future works. The exemplary life and devotions of Stead provided James Joyce with a model, a theme, and a purpose. Joyce integrated Steadfacts with his own personal emerging autobiography and interpretation of the ongoing Irish national, international, and even cosmic events. In this book Eckley uses new sources to unravel forgotten languages, motifs, and metaphors and recognizes “obscurity” as a “chrysalis factor” in Joyce’s Finnegans Wake to illuminate Stead’s influence on Joyce. This book of Finnegans Wake criticism will open paths for exciting new efforts in studying Joyce.
