Book excerpt: This is a great read for our generation as it embodies, what life was like for black kids up and down the country during the 70's. I always remember, seeing him, driving through Birmingham in his VW Cabriolet convertible. He has taken his toasting talents around the world representing his upbringing and culture, truly a pioneer for toasting about "Roots and Culture" but from a British-Jamaican aspect rather than the other way round. This book, is a must-read for anyone growing up in Britain in the inner Cities of all cultures. -- Dennis Seaton, Record Producer, Musical Youth

Book excerpt: Ignacy Krasicki (1735-1801) was hailed as 'The Prince of Poets' by his contemporaries. In 1779, sixty-five of his fables, which used contemporary events and human relations to show a course to guide human conduct, were published. These fables present a world where reason is valued over sentiment, true to the enlightenment ideal. But the rhymes also sugar coar a bitter message: depicting a world where the strong continually take advantage of the weak. Many of the fables, which were published after the first partition of Poland in which Russia, Prussia and Austria took their first bites of their weaker neighbour, should also be read for their political implications. This bilingual edition includes English translation by Gerard Kapolka and twenty-two illustrations by well-known Polish artist Barbara Swidinska.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Gould, a prominent, award-winning geographer who admits to having a low threshold for boredom, offers a collection of essays that reflect his eclectic research and provocative thinking. The topics range widely and include the diffusion of AIDS, mental maps, development themes in Africa, postmodernism, and the practices of teaching and writing. Becoming a Geographer expands on Gould's influential ideas and contributions to the field. Gould values the kind of independent thought and scholarship now often frowned upon by university administrators. He has written eighteen books and more than one hundred sixty articles that have appeared in more than seventy-six different journals during his forty-year career in research and higher education—his "lifetime sabbatical"—much of it spent teaching at Penn State. A witty, graceful, engaging writer, Could situates geography in a wider social context. In this book, he brings a fresh perspective to developments in the field including the quantitative and mathematical revolution in geography in the 1960s and 1970s. He writes with directness and clarity about the use and misuse of mathematics in illuminating social and geographical reality. His thoughts are especially valuable for what geography offers the world of learning and its capacity to help resolve urgent problems of the day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archaeologists are continually faced with a pervasive problem: How can cultures, and the interactions among cultures, be differentiated in the archaeological record? This issue is especially difficult in peripheral areas, such as El Salvador, Honduras, and southern Guatemala in the New World. Encompassing zones that are clearly Mayan in language and culture, especially during the Classic period, this area also includes zones that seem to be non-Mayan. The Southeast Maya Periphery examines both aspects of this territory. For the Maya, emphasis is on two sites: Quirigua, Guatemala, and Copan, Honduras. For the non-Maya zone, information is presented on a variety of sites and subregions—the Lower Motagua Valley in Guatemala; the Naco, Sula, and Comayagua valleys and the site of Playa de los Muertos in Honduras; and the Zapotitan Valley and the sites of Cihuatan and Santa Leticia in El Salvador. Spanning over two thousand years of prehistory, from the Middle Preclassic through the Classic and the poorly understood Postclassic, the essays in this volume address such topics as epigraphy and iconography, architecture, site planning, settlement patterns, and ceramics and include basic information on chronology. Copan and Quirigua are treated both individually and in comparative perspective. This significant study was the first to attempt to deal with the Periphery as a coherent unit. Unique in its comparative presentation of Copan and Quirigua and in the breadth of information on non-Maya sites in the area, The Southeast Maya Periphery consists largely of previously unpublished data. Offering a variety of approaches to both old and new problems, this volume attempts, among other things, to reassess the relationships between Copan and Quirigua and between Highland and Lowland ceramic traditions, to analyze ceramics by neutron activation, and to define the nature of the apparently non-Mayan cultures in the region. This book will be of major interest not only to Mayanists and Mesoamerican archaeologists but also to others interested in the processes of ethnic group boundary formation and maintenance.

Book excerpt: Murder for hire. Drug trafficking. Embezzlement. Money laundering... These might sound like plot lines of a thriller, but they are true stories from the short history of cryptocurrencies - digital currencies conceived by computer hackers and cryptographers that represent a completely new sort of financial transaction that could soon become mainstream. The most famous - or infamous - cryptocurrency is bitcoin. But look beyond its tarnished reputation and something much shinier emerges. The technology that underlies bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies - the blockchain - is hailed as the greatest advancement since the invention of the internet. It is now moving away from being the backbone for a digital currency and making inroads into other core concepts of society: identity, ownership and even the rule of law. The End of Money is your essential introduction to this transformative new technology that has governments, entrepreneurs and forward-thinking people from all walks of life sitting up and taking notice.
