Book excerpt: Let us take you on an exotic travel adventure. This book is your passport to destinations that are among the most remote on the planet. And all the stories are true. Imagine what it would be like to have your face painted by a headhunter. What would go through your mind as you caught a live alligator with your bare hands? How could you resist swimming with sea lions who could mimic almost all of your maneuvers? What would it be like to share in the discovery of a nineteenth century shipwreck off a deserted island? You will experience all of this and more as you accompany us through this book. We followed a routine for each trip. Long before we boarded our ship or plane we spent weeks devouring information about the places we would be seeing. Then during the trip we took copious notes. Upon our return we combined the knowledge we had gained, the photos, souvenirs and videos with our original studies. Only then did I begin writing and Marcia begin typing. We sent our stories to many friends and relatives who graciously seemed to welcome them. There are many expedition travel agencies but only three we can recommend from first-hand knowledge. Abercrombie and Kent, Society Expeditions, and Zegrahm all somehow combined the risk of adventure with the safety net of security that made us feel at home anywhere. We gained so much from our adventures. Although we can recall the wonderful, awesome experiences, we are aware of some shadows too. We saw how the rainforests are diminishing, species becoming extinct, and populations growing at an alarming rate. We are keenly aware of changes in the ozone layer over the South Pole and quixotic weather patterns. El nino no longer occurs only once every twenty-two years. The warming of the planet is not a debatable topic to us. More than anything else, however, we savor the richness of these expeditions like a giant tapestry of sights and sounds and feelings a richness which we will cherish for all time. We hope you will too!

This book is the first of its kind to provide in-depth insights into the emergence of mega-cruise tourism in destinations on the Arabian Peninsula and its impacts on local communities, their spaces, cultures, identities and tourist experiences. It offers a micro-sociological analysis, calling for holistic, participatory, mindful approaches and to rethink current exploitative tourism planning and development. It assumes a high political, social and economic importance within globalization. It draws on a long-term field study in an under-researched region in Asia that developed large-scale tourism recently to diversify the economy. The book provides insights on the destination development from a state of continuous growth to a sudden fall in tourism activities due to a sudden shock, caused by the global health pandemic and its resilience. It explores the sociocultural, economic and spatial challenges faced in international tourism development and its power relations analysed from different perspectives and within time. It analyses time-space compression, overtourism, urban tourism, nature-based tourism, enclavization, social capital, imaginaries, Cultural Ecosystem Services, slow tourism as well as just tourism. The book provides an innovative contribution to the planning and development of tourism destinations, communities and their spaces in which tourism operates in a fast pace. It will be of interest to academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students in the field of tourism and hospitality management, geography, sociology, anthropology, urban planning and environmental sciences. Moreover, the book will be useful for practitioners and policymakers around the globe, as well as all those interested in the fast emergence and the impacts of mega-cruise tourism.

Book excerpt: Any Baedeker will tell us where we ought to travel, but only Alain de Botton will tell us how and why. With the same intelligence and insouciant charm he brought to How Proust Can Save Your Life, de Botton considers the pleasures of anticipation; the allure of the exotic, and the value of noticing everything from a seascape in Barbados to the takeoffs at Heathrow. Even as de Botton takes the reader along on his own peregrinations, he also cites such distinguished fellow-travelers as Baudelaire, Wordsworth, Van Gogh, the biologist Alexander von Humboldt, and the 18th-century eccentric Xavier de Maistre, who catalogued the wonders of his bedroom. The Art of Travel is a wise and utterly original book. Don’t leave home without it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant look at colonialism and its effects in Antigua--by the author of Annie John "If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the Prime Minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a Prime Minister would want an airport named after him--why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen . . ." So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies where she grew up. Lyrical, sardonic, and forthright by turns, in a Swiftian mode, A Small Place cannot help but amplify our vision of one small place and all that it signifies.
