Book excerpt: Set in a well-known tourist island, Charles Mordray, a respected marine biologist and curator of an aquarium and zoo, and Geoffrey Cooper, scion of a powerful family are on converging paths. Mordray is desperate to clear his family name. Just prior to World War II, his father ignored a British government directive by attending a marine biology conference sponsored by the Nazi government. Geoffrey Cooper, to the chagrin of his father, has become one of the island's chief bon vivants. It is the pursuit of women who occupy most of young Cooper's waking moments. Both men will be affected by a startling event in 1968 that will imbue their fates along with a number of other islanders, shaking them to their very cores. "Finely crafted ... a page turn -- K. Satter."

Download or read book There Were Giants written by Gordon Glass and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are the largest creatures who have ever lived! Their intellects, superior to our own, are so totally alien, it renders them forever incomprehensible to us. These beings are the great whales of our planet's oceans. There's not time to unravel the mysteries of their existence, for within the lifetime of our children, these wonders will become extinct thanks to our having hunted them into oblivion. In the short time left in which we share this planet, it therefore becomes the task of the novelist to explore whale lives and their wet geographies. Gordon Glass's Latest novel, There Were Giants, does just this. Opening with these strange words: "It was the last one. It was the last one...," being repeatedly muttered via radio from the Japanese whaling fleet's flagship, the tone is set for wonder and discovery. Further, there is this mysterious, living stream; scores of whales are congregating and encircling the silent, unmoving whaling ship. And lastly, there is the awful sense of guilt and loss which overwhelmed the crew of the "Whalesaver," the Greenpeace-like anti-whaling vessel trailing the strangely becalmed whaling ship ahead of them. Then this weird mood-visitation lifted as mysteriously and as suddenly as it had arrived. Temporarily leaving these mysteries to be resolved later, the novel plunges into the lives of at least four major characters, one of which is Circleback, the last blue whale in the world. The lives of these characters become inextricably intertwined, knitting into a wonderful weave of loves and rivalries; defeats and victories. This plus-size epic, alternating between human and whale characters, forms the grandest sea-saga since Moby Dick.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a cool December morning near San Francisco, a distress call was radioed to shore by a local fisherman. He had discovered a humpback whale tangled in hundreds of yards of crab-trap lines, struggling to stay afloat. A team of volunteers answered the call, and four divers risked their lives to rescue the enormous animal. It was the first successful whale disentanglement performed off the West Coast of the United States and prompted a rare and remarkable demonstration of animal behavior. This celebrated story, beautifully depicted in Jennifer O'Connells mesmerizing paintings, will make you wonder about animal emotions and the unique connections we can have with other animals, seven whales. To research The Eye of the Whale, Jennifer traveled to San Francisco where she met Captain Mick Menigoz and rode his rescue boat, Superfish, out into the Pacific Ocean to the area where the events in the book took place. This experience fueled her inspiration as she created the images and words of this extraordinary story.
