Book excerpt: At the first flutter of renascent life, the mutable radiance of the Immutable Darkness passes from an inactive state into one of intense activity, and then begins its work through continuous differentiation and individualisation —propelled and ushered by Karma. Cosmic Cycles are subservient to the effects produced by this activity. Radiating from the rootless root-essence, the One Cosmic Atom becomes seven atoms on the plane of matter. Each atom is then transformed into a centre of energy, and radiates seven rays on the plane of spirit and seven creative forces in nature. The spiritual septenary on the right path and the material counterpart on the left, though they evolve in close embrace, remain separate till the end of the Kalpa. The visible Kosmos consists of self-produced beings, creatures of Karma. The true Buddhist denies the creation of Patristic fancy and regards the anthropomorphic God as a gigantic shadow thrown upon the void of space by the imagination of ignorant men. The task of analysing and classifying the human being as a terrestrial animal may be left to Science. But man’s inner, spiritual, psychic, and moral nature cannot be left to the tender mercies of an ingrained materialism. Molecularists such as Huxley demean certainty to probability, and rush to announce firm conclusions while the premisses are still to collect. They had sown wind and reaped the whirlwind. Within the global cycles of material descend and spiritual ascend, there are perpetual racial, national, and individual cycles of time ever returning upon themselves, periodically and intelligently, in Space and Eternity. The continuity and unity of history are principles of scientific divination, by which alone the mind penetrates the sealed records of the past and the unopened pages of the future. The whole past of the Earth is nothing but an unfolding present. The chief features of one’s life are always in accordance with the “constellation” one is born under, i.e., with the characteristics of its animating principle or the deity that presides over it. The closer the approach to one’s prototype “in heaven,” the better for the mortal whose personality was chosen by his own personal deity as its terrestrial abode. Our destiny is written in the stars. The closer the union between the mortal reflection, man, and his celestial prototype, the less dangerous the external conditions and subsequent reincarnations, which neither Buddhas nor Christs can escape. When the last strand is woven and man is enwrapped in the network of his own doing, he finds himself completely under the empire of his self-made destiny. It then either throws him like the inert shell against the immovable rock, or carries him away like a feather in a whirlwind raised by his own actions. Reason governs the world, its history, and its destiny. All else is subordinate and subservient to it, and the means for its development. Those who seek to satisfy their own purposes, are instruments of a higher and broader purpose, of which they know nothing, though they may realise it unconsciously. The law of evolution is now carrying us along the ascending arc of our cycle, when discordant effects will once again merge into counterbalanced causes, and all things will have regained their original harmony. The great Racial Cycles affect all the nations and tribes; but there are minor and national as well as tribal cycles within those, which run independently of each other. In the East they are known as Karmic cycles. In the West, since Pagan Wisdom has been repudiated as having grown from by dark powers supposed to be at constant war (and in opposition to the little tribal Jehovah), the awful significance of Karma-Nemesis has been entirely forgotten. But, in truth, Karma is the creator of nations and mortals; and it is they who make of her either a fury or a rewarding angel. There is not a single accident in our lives, not a misshapen day, which could not be traced back to our own doings in this or in a previous life. Karma-Nemesis is the synonym of Divine Providence, minus design, goodness, and every other finite qualification, so unphilosophically attributed to her. An Occultist will not speak of the goodness or cruelty of Providence; but he will teach that she guards the virtuous and watches over them in this, as in future lives; and that it punishes the evil-doer — even to his seventh rebirth. Were no man to hurt his brother, Karma would have neither cause to work for, nor weapons to act through. Nor would the ways of Karma remain inscrutable, were men to work in union and harmony, instead of disunion and strife. For our ignorance of those ways — which one portion of mankind calls the ways of Providence, dark and intricate; while another sees in them the action of blind Fatalism; and a third, mere chance, with neither gods nor devils to guide them — would surely disappear, if we would but attribute all these to their correct cause and learn how to be kind to each other. Karma is a law of occult dynamics, governing life throughout the universe, whether visible or invisible. Only the sceptics will shut their eyes, ostrich-like, to their own fate. This state will last till we begin acting from within, instead of ever following impulses from without; namely, those produced by our physical senses and barefaced selfishness. Until then, the only palliative to the evils of life is union and harmony — brotherhood in action, not simply in name. The suppression of one single bad cause will suppress not one, but a variety of bad effects, and hold back additional causes in a world already full of woe and evil. Karma is the unerring law of truth and justice which makes empires rise and fall, and adjusts even laughter at the mutual expense of sects, learned societies, and individuals. Prognostication of future events is neither prevision, nor prophecy: it is simply occult knowledge and mathematically correct computations that enable the wise men of the East to foretell, for instance, that the British Isles are on the eve of being destroyed by submarine volcanos and water, followed by France and other European countries, led by their own cycles of racial Karma.

See how the Fathers have falsified Jesus’ last words and made him a victim of his own success. “My God, my Sun, thou hast poured thy radiance upon me!” concluded the thanksgiving prayer of the Initiate, “the Son and the Glorified Elect of the Sun.” The Baptism in the Jordan is the Rite of Initiation and the final purification, when Christos and Sophia (Divine Intelligence–Wisdom) enter the Initiate by transference from Guru to Chela, leave the physical body upon death of the latter, and re-enter the Nirmanakaya, the Astral Ego of the new Adept. The “baptism” or Initiation of Jesus stands for the “descent” of the Higher Self or Soul (Atma-Buddhi) on Manas, the Higher Ego. And the union of Christos with Chrestos establishes a conscious communication of the Universal Individuality with the transcendent personality (Theophania) — the Adept. Jesus was crucified by his own Church, not by Scripture. The key to the hitherto unfathomable mystery of Jesus is hidden in the paronomasia of Chrestos and Christos. He who will not ponder over and master the great difference between the meaning of the two Greek words (Chrestos and Christos), must remain blind for ever to the true esoteric meaning of the Gospels; that is to say, to the living Spirit entombed in the sterile dead-letter of the texts, the very Dead Sea fruit of lip-Christianity. Jesus was Chrestos, a virtuous man in his trial of life and candidate to initiation. Not yet Christos, as he had not passed the third degree of initiation to become Epoptes. Chrestos, the neophyte, is admitted into the Christos condition at the end of his last incarnation when Manas is fully merged with Buddhi. His real temple is the awakened soul in the sanctuary of the heart. The real Christ is the Serpent or Dragon of Wisdom falling from on high into the hearts and minds of men. Christos is a Ray of Logos: Passive Wisdom in Heaven and Self-Active, Conscious Wisdom on Earth. Though the two are one, the permanent can never merge with the impermanent. It is only when the impermanent begins loving the permanent sufficiently to give up its ephemeral self and being, that a spiritual union of the “Heavenly man” with the “Virgin of the World” is accomplished and a new Saviour of Humanity is born here on earth but “without sin.” Alas, few are they who are fit to join that Holy Brotherhood where each, in order to gain admittance, must be at one with the Christ within him. Deity in Man is symbolised by Tau, a double glyph. Tau is formed from the figure Seven and the Greek letter Gamma, symbols of divine and earthly life, respectively. In its terrestrial attachment, Tau is the Sun shorn of his beams. In Greek Mythology, Tau is the iron lathe of Procrustes, the Attican Vishvakarman. Christos is Prometheus, a personification of the Great Logoic Sacrifice. On sending out its personal ray, Christos or Higher Manas becomes “crucified between two thieves”: the lower, impure tendencies that after death dissipate in Kama-Loka, and the higher aspirations that survive death and reascend the cyclic arc. Vishvakarman, the creator and “carpenter” of gods and men, crucifies Vikartana on a lathe and, cutting off the eighth part of his rays, deprives his head of its effulgence and creates round it a dark aureole. Christos is the “Man-God” of Plato, who crucifies himself for an eternity in the darkness of matter for the redemption of the Spirit of Light from the Kingdom of Darkness. As Deity and Man are One, so Christ is the God in Space and Man’s Saviour on Earth. Christos is the eternal, real Individuality or Universal Altruism, whereas Jesus-Chrestos is the ephemeral, false individuality or Egotism. Man is Deity on Earth, whose body is the cross of flesh, on, through, and in which he is ever crucifying and putting to death Christ, the Divine Logos, who is his benefactor and true friend. Chrest is a Ray made manifest from that Centre of Life which is hidden from the eyes of Humanity for and in Eternity. That Centre is the real Christ, crucified as a body of flesh and bones. The great mystery is at last unravelled: Christos, incarnating in Chrestos, becomes for certain purposes a willing candidate for a long series of tortures, mental and physical. Chrestos is the mortal man who, by crucifying the man of flesh and his passions on the Procrustean bed of torture, is reborn Immortal and leaves the animal-man behind him tied on the Cross of Initiation like an empty chrysalis. Then, his Higher Soul becomes as free as a butterfly.

The most praiseworthy Christians are modified Buddhists, though probably not one of them ever heard of Prince Siddhartha. Cruelty and mercy are finite feelings. But the Supreme Deity is infinite, hence it can only be Just, and Justice must be blind. The doctrine of Vicarious Atonement is one of the most demoralizing of doctrines. Even the faintest glimmering sense of Justice revolts against such a pernicious dogma of atonement by proxy and salvation by prayer. The effects of a cause are never limited to the boundaries of the cause, nor can the results of crime be confined to the offender and his victim. The action may be instantaneous, the effects are eternal.

Book excerpt: The key to the Mystery of Buddha and that of other Adepts lies in the correct understanding of the reflections in man of the Seven Principles or Powers in Nature, physically; and of the Seven Hierarchies of Being, intellectually and spiritually. The Seven Principles are the manifestation of One Indivisible Spirit, but only at the end of the Manvantara, when the seven merge once again into Absolute Unity, uncreated and impartite. The purified Egotistical Principle, the astral and personal ego of an Adept, though merging with its Highest Ego (Atma-Buddhi) may, for purposes of universal mercy and benevolence, separate itself from its divine Monad as to lead, on this plane of illusion and temporary being, a distinct independent conscious life of its own, under a borrowed illusive shape, thus serving at one and the same time a double purpose: the exhaustion of its own individual Karma, and the saving of millions of human beings less favoured than itself from the effects of mental blindness. Disembodied consciousness is not an effect, but a cause. Such consciousness is a ray of the all-pervading, limitless Flame, the reflections of which alone can differentiate. And, as such, consciousness is ubiquitous: it can be neither localized nor centred on any particular subject. Its effects alone are felt in the region of matter, but consciousness in itself remains the highest quality of the sentient spiritual principle within, the Divine Soul, and does not belong to the plane of materiality. After the death of the physical man, if he be an Initiate, his human consciousness is transformed into the independent Principle itself and, therefore, the former personal ego becomes pure and impersonal consciousness, untainted by any ego. The Bodhisattva becomes a Buddha (Enlightened) and a Nirvani through personal effort and merit, after having had to undergo all the hardships of every other neophyte — not by virtue of a divine birth, as thought by some. It was only the reaching of Nirvana while still living in the body on this earth, that was due to his having been in previous births high on the Path of Inner Wisdom. Once a man delivers himself from the snare of separateness, merging his self in the Universal Self, spiritual powers hitherto dormant in him are awakened, mysteries in invisible Nature are unveiled to him, and he becomes a Dhyani-Buddha — divine Flame and free Will in man. Then, as a Dhyani-Buddha himself, he can create mind-born Bodhisattvas. Twenty years after His outward death, Tathagata in His immense love and mercy for erring and ignorant humanity, refused Parinirvana in order that He might continue to help men on earth. Vajrasattva is the regent or chief of the Dhyani-Chohans or Dhyani-Buddhas, the Supreme Buddha; personal, yet never manifesting objectively. He is the “One without Beginning or End,” in short, the Logos of Buddhism. Vajrasattva is also Vajradhara, or Dorjechang. The two are one, and over them is the Supreme Unmanifested and Universal Wisdom that has no name. As two-in-one, They are the Power that subdues and conquers evil from the beginning, allowing it to reign only over willing subjects on earth, and having no power over those who despise and hate it. This dual personage has the same role assigned to it in canonical and dogmatic Tibetan Buddhism, as have Jehovah and the Archangel Mikael, the Metatron of the Jewish Kabbalists — which is an absurdity. The Roman Catholics identify Christ with Mikael, who is also his ferouer, or “face,” mystically. This is precisely the position of Vajrasattva in Northern Buddhism. For the latter, in His Higher Ego as Dorjechang, is never manifested, except to the seven Dhyani-Chohans, the primeval Builders. Esoterically, He is the Spirit of the Seven collectively, and Their highest principle or Atman. Metatron is the Greek Αγγελος (Messenger), or Great Teacher. Mikael fights Satan, the Dragon, and conquers him and his Angels. The War in Heaven of the Christian legend is based upon bad angels having discovered the magical wisdom of the good ones, and the mystery of the Tree of Life. Let anyone read simply the exoteric accounts in the Hindu and Buddhist Pantheons — the latter version being taken from the former — and he will find both resting on the same primeval, archaic allegory from the Secret Doctrine. At whatever age one puts off his outward body by free will, at precisely that age will he be made to die a violent death against his will in his next rebirth. Who, then, was punished by Karma? Karma cannot act unjustly. There is some terrible mystery involved in this story, one that no uninitiated intellect can ever unravel. Shankaracharya died at thirty-two years of age, or rather disappeared from the sight of his disciples, as the legend goes. All is darkness and mystery in it, for it is evidently written but for those who are already instructed. Lord Buddha lived one hundred years in reality though, having reached Nirvana in his eightieth year, he was regarded as one dead to the world of the living. It is not lawful to say any more, for the time has not yet come when nations are prepared to hear the whole truth. It will be sufficient to know that while Gautama Buddha remains merged in Nirvana ever since his death, Gautama Shakyamuni may have had to reincarnate — His dual inner personality being one of the greatest mysteries of Esoteric psychism. Abbe Roca’s ecclesiastical views upon the Esotericism of Christian Dogma. Part 2. Madame Blavatsky responds to Abbe Roca’s Esotericism of Christian Dogma. Christian texts are allegories to the archaic mysteries of the Cycle of Initiation, and keys to the once universal mystery-language. When esoterically interpreted, they reveal their fundamental identify with the same Universal Truths. By imposing the dogma of the “Word made flesh,” the Latin Church is diametrically opposed to the tenets of Eastern Occultism, thus maintaining an abyss between East and West as long as neither yields an inch. The New Testament is a western allegory founded upon universal mysteries, the first historical traces of which, in Egypt alone, go back at least to 6.000, years before the Christian era. Today’s Christians are the usurpers of a name they no longer understand. By denying the Divine Logos to any other man, except Jesus of Nazareth, the Churches carnalised the Christos of the Gnostics, and that alone prevents them having any point in common with the disciples of the Archaic Wisdom. Krishna, the historical hero, is mortal; but Vishnu, the divine Principle which animates him, is immortal. Vishnu absorbs only that part of himself which had animated the Avatara. The Church of Rome was Gnostic, just as much as the Marcionites were, until the middle of the second century. Further evidence that Rome has wandered farthest from the real religion of the mystical Christ is that it adopted the solar tonsure proper to the Egyptian priests of the public temples, and to the lamas and bonzes of the popular Buddhist cult. No “sacrificial victim” can be united with Christ triumphant before passing through the stage of the suffering Chrēst, who was put to death on the cross of his passions. It is Christos Himself who directs the occult movement. The Astronomical Christos can have only one anniversary of birth and resurrection in years because his parents are the Sun and the Moon, the heavenly bodies that accompany “the Man crucified in Space.” Paul had been converted not to Jesus of Nazareth but to the Christos of the Gnostics. In his Epistles he has been made to fulminate against the heretics — Peter, James, and the other Apostles! The sacred fire which Prometheus “stole” from the gods is the flame of self-consciousness, the spark that quickened the human mind. The supposed “theft” of the sexual flame is the outcome of evolution, of which the Darwinian theory is but the rough exterior husk on the material plane. Since men had discovered the secret of physical creation, and were procreating in their turn, what was the use of god-creators? The true Christ is the glorious Ego, triumphant over the flesh. We solemnly reject the dogma of Ascension, which degrades the great mystery of Universal Unity. Mysteries were invented by those who are bend on exercising power in order to manipulate the ignorant by arrogating the prerogative of gods. Did you know that the “mysteries” of the Catholic Church are those of the Brahmanas, though under other names? We will never accept either a Christ “made-flesh” or an anthropomorphic God, still less a “Shepherd” in the person of a Pope. Part 3. Abbe Roca counter-responds to Madame Blavatsky’s observations. Part 4. Madame Blavatsky debunks Abbe Roca’s mistaken notions concerning her observations. The Abbé has consigned the theological Christ to the background, and has not breathed a word about the esoteric Christos. He bears me a grudge for having displayed what he pleases to call “such erudition.” He deceives himself in fancying he understands Buddhism but he does not know it even exoterically, any more than Hinduism, even in its popular form. Theosophy is neither Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Mohammedanism, Hinduism, nor any other –ism: it is the esoteric synthesis of the world’s religions, philosophies, and sciences. Abbé Roca has fabricated for himself a Christianity of his own. A-brahm, in Sanskrit, means a non-Brahmana, a man driven out from the Brahmin caste, i.e., a man of inferior caste. Our Masters are far too great to bedizen themselves with the peacock’s feathers of infallibility. The puff of wind which knocks down a house of cards may easily pass for a heavy squall in the eyes of the architect who built it; but if the Abbé lays the blame on the puff, rather than on the weakness of his edifice, it is certainly not my fault. The homage he renders to the wisdom of our Masters, instead of intoxicating me by its heady fumes as he alleges, it made me feel an even deeper mistrust of his motives. A divine Christ has never existed under a human form outside the imagination of blasphemers, who have carnalised a universal and wholly impersonal principle. Unlike Abbé Roca, a true Buddhist would not even think of striking a dog to stop him from barking. The Man-God of the Christians was never historical person. He is a deified personification of the glorified type of the great Hierophants of the Temples, and his story as told in the New Testament is a mere allegory, assuredly containing profound esoteric truths, but still an allegory. Can one, who is inferior to the angels, be God? Matthew’s “strait is the gate and narrow is the way” applies neither to the Abbé nor his faith. In his Church, the way and the gate to heaven become wider in proportion to the sums paid by the faithful. The Churches, which style themselves “Christian,” are nothing but whited sepulchres filled with the dead bones of esoteric paganism and moral putrefaction. It is infinetly more difficult, more meritorious, and more godlike, to live for the love of, whether man or an ideal, than to die for it. The Abbé tells us one thing, and the history of his Bible quite another. Paul was never an apostle of ecclesiastical Christianity: he was the Gnostic adversary of Peter. Here is how a Bavarian theologian, with a lively imagination, made of the calculations of Pliny and Suidas a Japanese salad! And here is a fine passage “of the gnosis” from Bavaria that Dr. Sepp had found at the bottom of a pot of beer. We have thus shown to the Abbé what we, Occultists, know as opposed to what some Fathers of the Church believed they knew. Not only he deceives himself, he is hopelessly optimistic. Though I amply elaborated upon the real Christ, i.e., the impersonal pre-Christian Logos, Abbé Roca keeps reverting back to the ecclesiastical and dogmatic Christ of his Church. Part 5. Abbe Roca’s final response annotated by Madame Blavatsky. Part 6. Fearless Roca was defrocked for coquetting too openly with Theosophy. Alas! His glorious dream of a reconciliation between Pantheistic Theosophy and a Socialistic Latin Church, under a Caesaro-Papal head, came to an abrupt end.

He gives perfection to reason, measures the passions, inspires nature, connects the body, supplies things fortuitous, accomplishes the decrees of fate, and imparts the gifts of providence. In short, our daemon is the king of everything in and about us, and the pilot of the whole of our life. Hence Socrates was most perfect, being governed by such a presiding power, and conducting himself by the will of such a great leader and guardian of his life. The daemon within Socrates did not act upon Socrates externally with passivity; but the daemoniacal inspiration proceeding inwardly through his whole soul, and diffusing itself as far as to the organs of sense, became at last a voice, which was recognized more by consciousness, than by sense. The voice never exhorted, but perpetually recalled Socrates. Motivated from his great readiness to benefit those with whom he conversed, he acted naturally from within without. He needed not promptings from his guardian and benefactor. The voice of his daemon kept recalling Socrates’ consciousness inwardly in order to constrain his association with the multitude and the vulgar, so that his purity remained untainted.

Inspired by the presence of a Divine Virtue within, the lower classes sing the praises of the pinnacle of their respective order; some intellectually, others rationally; some in a natural manner, others physically. Every order of being proceeds gradually, in a beautiful descent, from the highest to the lowest. Stones and plants honour the sun and, in turn, they receive the bounty of divine love according to their ruling divinities. Magic is based on the affinities between organic and inorganic bodies, the visible productions of the four kingdoms, and the invisible powers of the universe. Thus, inferior ranks of the same order invariably venerate their superiors. That is why the cock is very much feared and revered by the lion. Insights to phenomena allowed the old priests to understand the power of noumena, and to control the hidden forces of nature. By combining various odours into one, they demonstrated the unity of Divine Essence. For, while division weakens each part, unity restores the idea of their exemplar. A humble herb or a self-unconscious stone is often enough to bring into being divine works. The master key of Divine Magic or Practical Theurgy is the Neo-Platonic term Theophania, when the Over-Soul (Atma-Buddhi) of a virtuous man incarnates for purposes of revelation. Then, the Word is made flesh in actuality, not as a figure of speech. A temporary divine incarnation is termed trance; if life-long, samadhi, when the mystic may at times quit his body. Personal god versus Absoluteness is the most troublesome of all doctrines. Once the self-delusion of anthropomorphism is understood and overcome, every mortal will realise that he is but a reflection of his immortal counterpart. The sole aim of Practical Occultism or Theurgy is the conscious reunion of the part with the All. Many are those who are eager to study Occultism, but very few have even an approximate idea of the Science itself. What Simon termed Magic, we now call Theosophia, i.e., Divine Wisdom, Power, and Knowledge. Its source and basis lies in the holy union of Spirit and Thought (Nous and Epinoia), whether on the purely divine or the terrestrial plane. That union is Helena, the “marriage” of Atma-Buddhi (Nous) with Lower Manas (male-female, in this sphere only), through which Spirit and Thought become one here on earth and are endowed with divine faculties and powers. Theoretical Occultism is harmless but Practical Magic is perilous. The numerals of the Kabbalah are especially dangerous. Unity, physical and metaphysical, is the real basis of Occult Sciences. While the Aryans applied their Science of Correspondences to veil the most spiritual and sublime truths of nature, the Jews used their acumen to conceal the single most divine mystery of evolution, i.e., that of birth and generation, before deifying the generative organs. Only Pythagoras’ cosmological theory of numerals can reconcile Matter and Spirit, and cause each to demonstrate the truth about the other mathematically. Let us then allow the world cling to its gods, to whatever plane or realm they may belong. The true Occultist would be guilty of high treason to mankind, were he to break forever the old deities before he could replace them with the whole and unadulterated truth. And this he cannot do as yet. The Esotericism of Egypt was that of the whole world during the long ages of the Third Race for it was imparted by Divine Instructors, the primeval Seven “Sons of Light.”

Sympathetic cure is the transplantation of a disease from a human to an animal or plant that is healthy and strong. Conversely, a disease cured in one person will appear in another; and love between two persons of the opposite sex may thus be created, and magnetic links be established between persons living at distant places, because there is only one Universal Principle of Life, and by its power all beings are sympathetically connected.

Book excerpt: There is a mysterious principle in Nature called Maha-Vishnu, which is not the God of that name, but a principle which contains Bija, the seed of Avatarism, i.e., the potency and cause of such divine incarnations. All the World-Saviours, the Bodhisattvas and the Avataras, are the trees of salvation grown out from the one seed. Whether it be called Adi-Buddha or Maha-Vishnu, it is all the same. In this profound esoteric sense, Lord Buddha is an incarnation of Maha-Vishnu. The Avatara is an appearance, one which may be termed a special illusion within the natural illusion that reigns on the planes under the sway of Maya; he is reborn consciously, at his will and pleasure; the units of the common herd unconsciously follow the great law of dual evolution. Thus all Avataras are one and the same: Sons of their Father, in a direct descent and line — the Father, one of Seven Flames, becomes the Son. Father and Son are One, in Eternity. The illusive avataric form having neither past nor future, because it had neither previous incarnation nor will it have subsequent rebirths, has naught to do with Karma, which has therefore no hold on it. Gautama Buddha is more than an Avatara. Though an Avatara in one sense, Gautama is a true human Jivanmukta, owing his position to his outstanding personal merit. His case is an exceptional one, and stems from the occult powers of the High Initiate who, before entering into the state of Nirvana, can cause his “remains” to stay on earth. Buddha and Jesus tower like giants in the history of mankind, in the realm of the spiritual. It is in their image that some enlightened men are born (when a specific humanitarian object is in view) and hypostatically animated by their divine prototypes, are reproduced again and again by the mysterious Powers that control and guide the destinies of our world. Not only does this statement apply to prominent characters in history, in general, but also to men of genius, to every remarkable man of the age, who soars beyond the common herd with some abnormally developed special capacity in him, leading to the progress and good of mankind. Since then the “Man of Sorrows” has returned more than once, unknown to, and undiscovered by, his blind followers. Since then, the “Son of God” has been most cruelly crucified, daily and hourly, by the Churches founded in his name. Even the Apostles, only half-initiated, failed to tarry for their Master and, not recognizing him, spurned him every time he returned. Special cases conferring permanent Theophania, i.e., the presence of God in man, a divine incarnation. A person of a sufficiently clean vessel might be selected for special purposes by his personal God, the Fountainhead of his Monad, who thus becomes his in-dweller. Such persons remain in our sphere and within human attraction and reach; and thus it is that not only a Buddha, a Shankacharya, or a Jesus that animate several persons at one and the same time, but even the principles of a high Adept may be animating the outward tabernacles of worthy mortals.
