Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With compelling characters and a heart-pounding plot, Jamila Minnicks pulled me into pages of history I’d never turned before."―Barbara Kingsolver, New York Times bestselling author of Demon Copperhead Winner of the PEN/Bellwether Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, an enchanting and thought-provoking debut novel about a Black woman doing whatever it takes to protect all she loves on Alabama soil during the Civil Rights Movement. It’s 1957, and after leaving the only home she has ever known, Alice Young steps off the bus into all-Black New Jessup, where residents have largely rejected integration as the means for Black social advancement. Instead, they seek to maintain, and fortify, the community they cherish on their “side of the woods.” In this place, Alice falls in love with Raymond Campbell, whose clandestine organizing activities challenge New Jessup’s longstanding status quo and could lead to the young couple’s expulsion—or worse—from the home they both hold dear. As they marry and raise children together, Alice must find a way to balance her undying support for his underground work with her desire to protect New Jessup from the rising pressure of upheaval from inside, and outside, their side of town. Based on the history of the many Black towns and settlements established across the country, Jamila Minnicks's heartfelt and riveting debut is both a celebration of Black joy and a timely examination of the opposing viewpoints that attended desegregation in America. Longlisted for The Center for Fiction 2023 First Novel Prize

Download or read book The Eternal Pan written by Linda Laird and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-07-30 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Years ago, I went to the movies to see Disney’s Hook, starring Robin Williams as Pan. Although the movie was a wonderful story, I left dissatisfied with the idea that Peter Pan—the boy who never grew up—was now a grown-up lawyer who was doomed to grow old and eventually pass on. He was no longer the eternal, immortal youth but just another human. It was a very disturbing thought because it took away the wonderful creation of Peter Pan as the eternal youth and ended the story, which should have gone on forever for all children or those of us that are children at heart. It bothered me that the boy who wouldn’t grow up was no more. So I decided to add more to the tale to bring it back to its never-ending beginnings. This is the result. Many thanks to those who put up with my crazy ideas and encouraged me to write them down, then read and assisted me with their input. To them and the spiritually youthful Robin Williams, I dedicate this story. Tom Wilkerson, Paul Russell, Judy Orr, I couldn’t have done it without them.

Book excerpt: Lucy Maud Montgomery's collection of 20 novels in one volume is a literary treasure trove, offering readers a comprehensive look into the world of one of Canada's most beloved authors. Known for her vivid descriptions and poignant storytelling, Montgomery's works transport readers to the idyllic landscapes of Prince Edward Island, where her most famous character, Anne Shirley, comes to life in the Anne of Green Gables series. Beyond Anne, Montgomery's other series such as Emily Starr Trilogy, The Blue Castle, and Pat of Silver Bush showcase her versatility as a writer and her ability to capture the essence of childhood and coming of age in a quaint, nostalgic setting. Montgomery's own life experiences, including her rural upbringing, struggles with mental health, and love of nature, heavily influenced her writing. Her personal connections to the landscapes and characters in her novels give readers a glimpse into the heart of the author behind the words, adding depth to the stories she weaves. I highly recommend The Complete Novels of Lucy Maud Montgomery to any reader looking to immerse themselves in beautifully crafted, heartwarming tales that evoke a sense of nostalgia and innocence. Montgomery's timeless stories will captivate readers of all ages and leave a lasting impression on all who venture into her enchanting world.
