Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now distributed by Brill for The Chinese University Press This book is, in fact, a study of human survival. It describes the Chinese immigrants in Montreal, Canada, as they encounter racial discrimination. It begins with the arrival of the first batch of Cantonese, in the 1850s, in Victoria, British Columbia, and ends, in the late 1970s and 1980s, in Montreal. Like Vancouver and Toronto, Montreal saw the influx of two contrasting groups of Chinese: refugees of Chinese descent from Indo-China, and economic migrants from Hong-Kong. The book uses oral history and in-depth interview material, in documenting the costs of racism on the one hand, and the strategies for adaptation on the other. The author argues that the kind of racism the Chinese in Montreal have been subjected to is a systematic one. This book is now distributed by Brill for The Chinese University Press.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first full-length biography of the first published Asian North American fiction writer portrays both the woman and her times. The eldest daughter of a Chinese mother and British father, Edith Maude Eaton was born in England in 1865. Her family moved to Quebec, where she was removed from school at age ten to help support her parents and twelve siblings. In the 1880s and 1890s she worked as a stenographer, journalist, and fiction writer in Montreal, often writing under the name Sui Sin Far (Water Lily). She lived briefly in Jamaica and then, from 1898 to 1912, in the United States. Her one book, Mrs. Spring Fragrance, has been out of print since 1914. Today Sui Sin Far is being rediscovered as part of American literature and history. She presented portraits of turn-of-the-century Chinatowns, not in the mode of the "yellow peril" literature in vogue at the time but with an insider's sympathy. She gave voice to Chinese American women and children, and she responded to the social divisions and discrimination that confronted her by experimenting with trickster characters and tools of irony, sharing the coping mechanisms used by other writers who struggled to overcome the marginalization to which their race, class, or gender consigned them in that era. "Superbly researched, thoughtfully reasoned, and beautifully written. . . . Will be the foundation for all future work on Sui Sin Far." -- Elizabeth Ammons, author of Conflicting Stories: American Women Writers at the Turn into the Twentieth Century

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benefiting from Montreal's remarkable archival records, Sherry Olson and Patricia Thornton use an ingenious sampling of twelve surnames to track the comings and goings, births, deaths, and marriages of the city's inhabitants. The book demonstrates the importance of individual decisions by outlining the circumstances in which people decided where to move, when to marry, and what work to do. Integrating social and spatial analysis, the authors provide insights into the relationships among the city's three cultural communities, show how inequalities of voice, purchasing power, and access to real property were maintained, and provide first-hand evidence of the impact of city living and poverty on families, health, and futures. The findings challenge presumptions about the cultural "assimilation" of migrants as well as our understanding of urban life in nineteenth-century North America. The culmination of twenty-five years of work, Peopling the North American City is an illuminating look at the humanity of cities and the elements that determine whether their citizens will thrive or merely survive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive, worldwide bibliography of racism. It contains references on some 135 countries and extends from ancient times to the present. The first part of the work consists of references dealing with single countries. More than 10,000 citations are organized according to country from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. The second part contains references to areas or regions or to related bibliographies. Some 2,000 non-duplicated citations are provided here. While the vast majority of entries are to English-language materials, a number of German, French, Spanish, and other language items are included as well. The work concludes with an author index and a subject index. Due to the many ways racism manifests itself, this bibliography will be of great value to scholars and students from a variety of disciplines from economics and education to sociology and history.
