Book excerpt: Excerpt from Changes in the Cost of Living: July, 1914-November, 1920; Research Report Number 33, December, 1920 From the chart on the opposite page it will be seen that there was a steady rise in the cost of living from July, 1914, to July, 1920, except for a drop of about 3% in the four-month period immediately following the close of the war in 1918-1919; but that between July, 1920, and November, 1920, the cost of living decreased nearly The chart shows also that the decline in the total cost of living, both in the immediate post-war period and in the four months between July and November, 1920, was caused by a fall in the prices of food and of clothing. Increases in the cost of food and of clothing, nevertheless, kept above the increase in the total cost of living throughout the entire period covered by these figures. The cost of shelter, fuel and light, and, sundries, increases in which had been less than in the cost of living as a whole, showed a practically constant advance from July, 1914, to November, 1920. A tendency toward a leveling of percent ages of increase in the cost of the major items making up the total cost of living is thus apparent in both periods of declining prices.
