Book excerpt: « Learning French all by myself » workbook collectionMontessori Workbook 3 : Corrections for Dictation and Sentence Analysis This workbook 3 Corrections is an educational workbook that has been created to accompany a child's experience in learning French. Series 3 (Dictation and Sentence Analysis) follow Series 2 (Vocabulary and dictation). This workbook, along with the three workbooks in this series (3a, 3b, 3c), will cover all of the 62 phonetic sounds necessary to learn French. The teacher, remember is be able to exactly say each of the words and phrases to the students. This workbook utilizes the same 62 phonetic sounds as Workbook 1. For each phonetic, there will be a word or phrase for the teacher to say and child to hear. At the same time, the child will be able to view these phonetics in colorful pictures and then write (cursive) the word or phrase. These materials are presented to the child progressively, such that the phonetics that were grasped in the previous level are re-utilized at the next level. The complete series (Workbooks 1, 2, 3) will allow the child of 6 years old and beyond to learn the basics of the French langua≥ the vocabulary of reading, writing, and spelling; and associated grammar and verb conjugation. We hope that these workbooks respect the needs of both right and left handers. We believe that both would benefit the most by using teaching tools that most closely match their needs. This complete collection is inspired by the Montessori philosophy and the Orton Gillingham method, the two most used methods in language learning programs in Europe and in the United States. This program was created by a team of teachers, speech therapists and Montessori educators. The workbooks have been tested by children in several schools, and settings (including homeschooling); and with speech-language therapists. These workbooks also conform with the standards of the National French Educational Programs. We sincerely believe that you will find satisfaction and enjoyment with our educational materials. Book excerpt: Twenty Years of Education Transformation in Gauteng 1994 to 2014: An Independent Review presents a collection of 15 important essays on different aspects of education in Gauteng since the advent of democracy in 1994. These essays talk to what a provincial education department does and how and why it does these things - whether it be about policy, resourcing or implementing projects. Each essay is written by one or more specialist in the relevant focus area. The book is written to be accessible to the general reader as well as being informative and an essential resource for the specialist reader. It sheds light on aspects of how a provincial department operates and why and with what consequences certain decisions have been made in education over the last 20 turbulent years, both nationally and provincially. There has been no attempt to fit the book's chapters into a particular ideological or educational paradigm, and as a result the reader will find differing views on various aspects of the Gauteng Department of Education's present and past. We leave the reader to decide to what extent the GDE has fulfilled its educational mandate over the last 20 years.

Book excerpt: This book contains accepted papers presented at ICEUTE 2020 held in the beautiful and historic city of Burgos (Spain), in September 2020. The 11th International Conference on EUropean Transnational Education (ICEUTE 2020) has been a meeting point for people working on transnational education within Europe. It has provided a stimulating and fruitful forum for presenting and discussing the latest works and advances on transnational education within European countries. After a thorough peer-review process, the ICEUTE 2020 International Program Committee selected 44 papers which are published in these conference proceedings achieving an acceptance rate of 41%. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the ICEUTE 2020 edition was blended, combining on-site and on-line participation. In this relevant edition, a special emphasis was put on the organization of five special sessions related to relevant topics as Role of English in Transnational Education and Teacher Training, Personalization and ICT: a Path to Educational Inclusion, Innovation and Research Findings in Engineering Higher Education, Practical Implementations of Novel Initiatives, and Innovation in Computer Science Higher Education. The selection of papers was extremely rigorous in order to maintain the high quality of the conference, and we would like to thank the members of the Program Committees for their hard work in the reviewing process. This is a crucial process to the creation of a high standard conference, and the ICEUTE conference would not exist without their help.

Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of tools and mathematics and issues in mathematics education related to tool use. The book has five parts. The first part reflects on doing a mathematical task with different tools, followed by a mathematician's account of tool use in his work. The second considers prehistory and history: tools in the development from ape to human; tools and mathematics in the ancient world; tools for calculating; and tools in mathematics instruction. The third part opens with a broad review of technology and intellectual trends, circa 1970, and continues with three case studies of approaches in mathematics education and the place of tools in these approaches. The fourth part considers issues related to mathematics instructions: curriculum, assessment and policy; the calculator debate; mathematics in the real world; and teachers' use of technology. The final part looks to the future: task and tool design and new forms of activity via connectivity and computer games.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paideia Proposal is a system of liberal education intended for all children. It was a response to what Adler characterized as the United States' antidemocratic or undemocratic educational system, a holdover from the 19th century, when the understanding of basic human rights fell short of 20th century expectations. The Paidea Proposal was based upon the following assumptions: 1) All children are educable; 2) Education is never completed in school or higher institutions of learning, but is a lifelong process of maturity for all citizens; 3) The primary cause of learning is the activity of the child's mind, which is not created by, but only assisted by the teacher; 4) Multiple types learning and teaching must be utilized in education, not just teacher lecturing, or telling; and 5) A student's preparation for earning a living is not the primary objective of schooling. Adler stressed that the proposal is much more than just a return to the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic. It is not simply a return to the values of classical civilization, but a return to what is of enduring value. It is a democratic proposal intended for the education of all, and not an elitist program as some have alleged.
