Book excerpt: Almost eight years have passed since I rode that juggernaut garbage truck into history and glory during the "Borderline of Friendship Parade" south of McAllen, Texas, routing a gang of despicable drug traffickers and generating temporary local pollution. Since then, a lot of water under many unsafe bridges, many pointless and inexplicable murders all over the U.S. and the world, a plethora of high-level fumbling economically and politically on the national and international levels, etc... But I have always made it a honed point to eschew substantive material in perpetuating the chronicles of my illustrious adventures and I can conceive of no reason to alter that fabulous format now in my present work, MONTANA PRESERVE. Instead, I will leave no rock unupset in the unswerving course of my nonpareil detecting, and I will never call upon a succinct sentence or monosyllabic word where rambling narrative and overblown verbiage will suffice. So, ensconce yourself, for once you embark on this Carlyle Current epic, it can be minutes before you decide to toss -- "lay" it aside for something more stimulating such as a TV rerun of I LOVE LOOSELY -- uh, make that LUCY, or DRAGNET, especially the later DRAGNETs with Harry Morgan in the supporting role.
