Book Synopsis Pour une histoire des Alpes, Moyen Age et Temps Modernes by : Jean-François Bergier

This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Alps, as Professor Bergier shows in this selection of his work, should not be considered an impassable barrier, nor an isolated region, but rather as an integral part of the history of Europe. The lowlanders’ typical view of the mountains as fearful heights to be crossed, and the image of those who lived there as existing in a delicate balance with nature, are part only of the story. These articles are particularly concerned with transalpine traffic, and the different routes it took in response to changing circumstances in the lands to south and north, and with the exploitation and use of mountain resources. A number aim also to identify the particularities of the mountain way of life, and its social and political organisation.
Book Synopsis Animal production and natural resources utilisation in the Mediterranean mountain areas by : A. Georgoudis
Download or read book Animal production and natural resources utilisation in the Mediterranean mountain areas written by A. Georgoudis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mediterranean inhabitants depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. Livestock production and forestry are key sources of income yet are carried out under harsh conditions such as limited land resources, marginal agricultural conditions, isolation, and scant equipment and infrastructure. Livestock is of particular importance in mountain production systems as they convert plant biomass into useful products for humans such as milk, meat and draught power. These products are key to the regions' sustainability. The main topics discussed in this book are: Human geography of Mediterranean mountain territories. Livestock production and natural resources. Improving the efficiency of livestock systems in Mediterranean mountain areas. Applications of new technologies for environmentally sound management of livestock and natural resources. The role livestock plays in rural development and in safeguarding natural resources.

Book Synopsis Renewable Energies and European Landscapes by : Marina Frolova
Download or read book Renewable Energies and European Landscapes written by Marina Frolova and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides timely, multidisciplinary cross-national comparison of the institutional and social processes through which renewable energy landscapes have emerged in Southern Europe. On the basis of case studies in these countries, it analyzes the way in which and the extent to which the development of renewable energies has affected landscape forms and whether or not it has contributed to a reformulation of landscape practices and values in these countries. Landscape is conceived broadly, as a material, social, political and historical process embedded into the local realm, going beyond aesthetic. The case studies analyze renewable energy landscapes in Southern Europe on different political and geographical scales and compare different types of renewable energy such as wind, hydro, solar and biomass power. The contributors are leading experts from Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. The book is intended for researchers, graduate students and professionals interested in geography, landscape and planning.

Book Synopsis Identification des principales zones protégées transfontalières en Europe by : Robert Brunner
Download or read book Identification des principales zones protégées transfontalières en Europe written by Robert Brunner and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

The discussions covered the genesis and implications of deposit insurance cum fractional reserve requirements; the experience with market-based regulations in Chile and in New Zealand and the narrow banking proposal (100 percent reserves on demand deposits), with a discussion of how Argentina's path towards this type of banking system helped this country weather its 1995 banking crisis. Contributors include central bank presidents (Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Nicaragua) and directors (Colombia); heads of regulatory agencies and banking centers (Bolivia and Mexico); rating agencies (Brazil), private bankers, World Bank economists, and academics.

Book Synopsis Agricultural and Pastoral Landscapes in Pre-Industrial Society by : Fèlix Retamero

This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a series of case studies, this third volume in the Earth series deals with the technological constraints and innovations that enabled societies to survive and thrive across a range of environmental conditions. The contributions are structured into three sections to draw out particular commonalities and contrasts in the choices made by pre-industrial communities in the construction of varied landscapes and cultural heritage: Landnam, from the Old Norse for ‘taking of land’, deals with colonization, including the drivers and processes through which colonizers developed an understanding of the productive potential and limitations of their new lands. Fields and field systems: Field-walls are a distinctive and apparently timeless characteristic of many pre-industrial farming landscapes but they present many the challenges to their study, such as the effects of plowing, abandonment and land-use change and of urban development in fertile lowland zones which may eradicate, reduce or conceal past systems of land-use and division. The importance of indirect and proxy evidence is illustrated and the value of interdisciplinary and modeling approaches emphasized. Agro-pastoralism: focuses on the complex ‘time-space adaptations’ devised for managing cultivation and livestock production, particularly the need to prevent stock incursions into arable fields during the growing season whilst making effective use of seasonal grazing resources. The contributions focus on mountainous areas, where temporary migrations, in the form of transhumance, provided access to a diversity of resources based around seasonal constraints on their availability and productivity.

Book Synopsis Movement, Exchange and Identity in Europe in the 2nd and 1st Millennia BC by : Anne Lehoërff
Download or read book Movement, Exchange and Identity in Europe in the 2nd and 1st Millennia BC written by Anne Lehoërff and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers by an international chort of contributors explores the nature of the maritime connections that appear to have existed in the Transmanche/English Channel Zone during later prehistory. Organised into three themes, ‘Movement and Identity in the Transmanche Zone’; ‘Travel and exchange’; ‘Identity and Landscape’, the papers seek to articulate notions of frontier, mobility and identity from the end of the 3rd to the beginning of the 1st millennium BC, a time when the archaeological evidence suggests that the sea facilitated connections between peoples on both sides of the Channel rather than acting as a barrier as it is so often perceived today. Recent decades have since a massive increase in large-scale excavation programmes on either side of the Channel in advance of major infra-structure and urban development, resulting in the acqusition of huge, complex new datasets enabling new insights into later prehistoric life in this crucially important region. Papers consider the role of several key archaeologists in transforming our appreciation of the connectivity of the sea in prehistory; consider the extent to which the Channel zone developed into a closely unified cultural zone during later Bronze Age in terms of communities that serviced the movement of artefacts across the Channel with both sides sharing widely in the same artefacts and social practices; examine funerary practices and settlement evidence and consider the relationship between communities in social, cultural and ideological terms; and consider mechanisms for the transmission of ideas and how they may be reflected in the archaeological record. Brings together leading scholars from the UK and northern Europe in a thought-provoking and revealing new examination of the relationship between communities in the ‘Transmanche Zone’ in the Bronze and Iron Ages. The premise is that the English Channel was a conduit for connectivity and exchange of ideas, artefacts and social practices and rather than a barrier or frontier that had to be overcome before such connections could be fostered.
