Book excerpt: Brick and Block Masonry - Trends, Innovations and Challenges contains the lectures and regular papers presented at the 16th International Brick and Block Masonry Conference (Padova, Italy, 26-30 June 2016). In an ever-changing world, in which innovations are rapidly implemented but soon surpassed, the challenge for masonry, the oldest and most traditional building material, is that it can address the increasingly pressing requirements of quality of living, safety, and sustainability. This abstracts volume and full paper USB device, focusing on challenges, innovations, trends and ideas related to masonry, in both research and building practice, will proof to be a valuable source of information for researchers and practitioners, masonry industries and building management authorities, construction professionals and educators.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 1298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book excerpt: As a seismic force-resisting system (SFRS), reinforced masonry shear walls with masonry boundary elements (RMSW+BEs) were found to achieve enhanced strength, stability, and ductility levels compared to rectangular RMSWs. The seismic design of RMSW+BEs necessitates reliable experimental and analytical investigations of their reinforced masonry boundary elements (RMBEs). The axial monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves of RMBEs are essential to predict the lateral cyclic response of RMSW+BEs. This research aims to investigate, experimentally and analytically, the axial monotonic and cyclic behaviour of RMBEs built with C-shape masonry blocks. Moreover, this research proposes monotonic and cyclic stress-strain models for unconfined and confined RMBEs subjected to axial compression loading. Furthermore, a numerical study was performed to assess the sensitivity of the nonlinear seismic response of RMSW+BEs to various wall configurations and design parameters. This research's experimental work involved investigating various parameters affecting the compressive strength of fully grouted concrete masonry prisms and the axial monotonic and cyclic behaviour of RMBEs. Forty-two masonry prisms and 69 RMBEs were tested. The studied parameters were the vertical reinforcement ratio, the confinement ratio, the cross-section geometry (i.e., square vs. rectangular RMBEs), the masonry bonding pattern, pre-wetting of dry RMBEs, various grout types, and the grout compressive strength. The results showed that RMBEs built with rectangular sections exhibited enhanced strain ductility and post-peak behaviour than square RMBEs. Besides, using low grout compressive strength significantly reduced the strain ductility and yielded sharp strength degradation of the RMBEs. The RMBEs' experimental results revealed that the monotonic stress-strain curves form envelope curves to their cyclically tested counterparts. The proposed monotonic and cyclic stress-strain models showed good-to-excellent agreement with the experimental results, predicting the envelope and cyclic stress-strain curves' major characteristics. The numerical study's results showed that the seismic design of RMSW+BEs can be optimized through careful choice of their design parameters. Enhancing the RMSW+BEs lateral yield and ultimate capacities and the lateral effective stiffness can be achieved by increasing the vertical reinforcement ratio of the RMBEs and the masonry compressive strength. Contrarily, reducing the masonry strain at peak stress and/or the masonry modulus of elasticity greatly hinders the walls' displacement ductility.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A number of researchers have conducted experimental tests on unreinforced masonry walls (URM) strengthened with advanced composite materials. Consequently, the strengthening design guidelines are limited in their scope to URM. This research aimed to investigate the behavior of reinforced masonry walls strengthened with advanced composite and subjected to out-of-plane pseudo-static cyclic load. Experimental and analytical studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of different techniques such as near surface mounted (NSM) and externally bonded (EB) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) with epoxy resin, in addition to NSM with cementitious adhesive and fiber reinforced cementitious material (FRCM). The experimental part included three phases. In the first phase, a series of 42 reinforced masonry walls were tested to study the effectiveness of advanced composites in enhancing out-of-plane flexural capacity. The effect of long-term environmental exposure on strengthening systems was investigated in the second phase of study by testing 10 reinforced masonry walls. The third phase focused on bond behavior between the advanced composite and the concrete masonry unit at different temperatures; 56 specimens were used for this purpose. The results indicated that the non-arching strengthened reinforced masonry wall's behavior was significantly dependent on the type of fiber and fiber reinforcement ratio. The specimens strengthened with glass under combined environmental cycles exhibited an insignificant change in terms of ultimate strength as compared to laboratory conditioned specimens. The theoretical part included the investigation of bond reduction factors, seismic performance, and the nonlinear analysis of strengthened reinforced masonry wall using moment-curvature analysis. As a result of this study, the proposed model for predicting debonding strain and the moment-curvature relation presented an excellent prediction compared to the experimental results"--Abstract, page iv.
