Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Monomialization of morphisms is the problem of transforming a mapping into a monomial mapping by blowing up a chain of nonsingular subvarieties in its domain and image. The notion of a strongly prepared morphism, a morphism with some local properties, was first introduced by S.D. Cutkosky in his paper on monomialization of morphisms from 3-folds to surfaces. As an intermediate result it was proved that after performing a finite sequence of blowups one can make every dominant morphism from a 3-fold to a surface strongly prepared. The similar result for higher dimensions is unknown. We prove that strongly prepared morphisms from n-folds to surfaces can be monomialized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A morphism of algebraic varieties (over a field characteristic 0) is monomial if it can locally be represented in e'tale neighborhoods by a pure monomial mappings. The book gives proof that a dominant morphism from a nonsingular 3-fold X to a surface S can be monomialized by performing sequences of blowups of nonsingular subvarieties of X and S. The construction is very explicit and uses techniques from resolution of singularities. A research monograph in algebraic geometry, it addresses researchers and graduate students.

Book Synopsis Resolution of Singularities by : Steven Dale Cutkosky
Download or read book Resolution of Singularities written by Steven Dale Cutkosky and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of singularity is basic to mathematics. In algebraic geometry, the resolution of singularities by simple algebraic mappings is truly a fundamental problem. It has a complete solution in characteristic zero and partial solutions in arbitrary characteristic. The resolution of singularities in characteristic zero is a key result used in many subjects besides algebraic geometry, such as differential equations, dynamical systems, number theory, the theory of $\mathcal{D}$-modules, topology, and mathematical physics. This book is a rigorous, but instructional, look at resolutions. A simplified proof, based on canonical resolutions, is given for characteristic zero. There are several proofs given for resolution of curves and surfaces in characteristic zero and arbitrary characteristic. Besides explaining the tools needed for understanding resolutions, Cutkosky explains the history and ideas, providing valuable insight and intuition for the novice (or expert). There are many examples and exercises throughout the text. The book is suitable for a second course on an exciting topic in algebraic geometry. A core course on resolutions is contained in Chapters 2 through 6. Additional topics are covered in the final chapters. The prerequisite is a course covering the basic notions of schemes and sheaves.

Book Synopsis Valuation Theory and Its Applications by : Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann
Download or read book Valuation Theory and Its Applications written by Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of two proceedings volumes stemming from the International Conference and Workshop on Valuation Theory held at the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon, SK, Canada). Valuation theory arose in the early part of the twentieth century in connection with number theory and has many important applications to geometry and analysis: the classical application to the study of algebraic curves and to Dedekind and Prufer domains; the close connection to the famousresolution of the singularities problem; the study of the absolute Galois group of a field; the connection between ordering, valuations, and quadratic forms over a formally real field; the application to real algebraic geometry; the study of noncommutative rings; etc. The special feature of this book isits focus on current applications of valuation theory to this broad range of topics. Also included is a paper on the history of valuation theory. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians working in algebra, algebraic geometry, number theory, and mathematical logic.

Book Synopsis Enumerative Invariants in Algebraic Geometry and String Theory by : Marcos Marino
Download or read book Enumerative Invariants in Algebraic Geometry and String Theory written by Marcos Marino and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-08-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the middle of the 80s, there has been a growing and fruitful interaction between algebraic geometry and certain areas of theoretical high-energy physics, especially the various versions of string theory. Physical heuristics have provided inspiration for new mathematical definitions (such as that of Gromov-Witten invariants) leading in turn to the solution of problems in enumerative geometry. Conversely, the availability of mathematically rigorous definitions and theorems has benefited the physics research by providing the required evidence in fields where experimental testing seems problematic. The aim of this volume, a result of the CIME Summer School held in Cetraro, Italy, in 2005, is to cover part of the most recent and interesting findings in this subject.
Book Synopsis Zeta Functions of Groups and Rings by : Marcus du Sautoy
Download or read book Zeta Functions of Groups and Rings written by Marcus du Sautoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zeta functions have been a powerful tool in mathematics over the last two centuries. This book considers a new class of non-commutative zeta functions which encode the structure of the subgroup lattice in infinite groups. The book explores the analytic behaviour of these functions together with an investigation of functional equations. Many important examples of zeta functions are calculated and recorded providing an important data base of explicit examples and methods for calculation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year young mathematicians congregate in Saint Flour, France, and listen to extended lecture courses on new topics in Probability Theory. The goal of these notes, representing a course given by Terry Lyons in 2004, is to provide a straightforward and self supporting but minimalist account of the key results forming the foundation of the theory of rough paths.
Book Synopsis Singular Coverings of Toposes by : Marta Bunge
Download or read book Singular Coverings of Toposes written by Marta Bunge and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-01-19 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a self-contained theory of certain singular coverings of toposes, including branched coverings. This book is distinguished from classical treatments of the subject by its unexpected connection with a topic from functional analysis, namely, distributions. Although primarily aimed at topos theorists, this book may also be used as a textbook for advanced graduate courses introducing topos theory with an emphasis on geometric applications.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Symplectic Geometry by : Ana Cannas da Silva
Download or read book Lectures on Symplectic Geometry written by Ana Cannas da Silva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of these notes is to provide a fast introduction to symplectic geometry for graduate students with some knowledge of differential geometry, de Rham theory and classical Lie groups. This text addresses symplectomorphisms, local forms, contact manifolds, compatible almost complex structures, Kaehler manifolds, hamiltonian mechanics, moment maps, symplectic reduction and symplectic toric manifolds. It contains guided problems, called homework, designed to complement the exposition or extend the reader's understanding. There are by now excellent references on symplectic geometry, a subset of which is in the bibliography of this book. However, the most efficient introduction to a subject is often a short elementary treatment, and these notes attempt to serve that purpose. This text provides a taste of areas of current research and will prepare the reader to explore recent papers and extensive books on symplectic geometry where the pace is much faster. For this reprint numerous corrections and clarifications have been made, and the layout has been improved.
Book Synopsis Lectures on Resolution of Singularities (AM-166) by : János Kollár
Download or read book Lectures on Resolution of Singularities (AM-166) written by János Kollár and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-10 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resolution of singularities is a powerful and frequently used tool in algebraic geometry. In this book, János Kollár provides a comprehensive treatment of the characteristic 0 case. He describes more than a dozen proofs for curves, many based on the original papers of Newton, Riemann, and Noether. Kollár goes back to the original sources and presents them in a modern context. He addresses three methods for surfaces, and gives a self-contained and entirely elementary proof of a strong and functorial resolution in all dimensions. Based on a series of lectures at Princeton University and written in an informal yet lucid style, this book is aimed at readers who are interested in both the historical roots of the modern methods and in a simple and transparent proof of this important theorem.
