Book excerpt: The goal of this thesis is to address the need for improved monitoring of forest ecosystem dynamics in the context of anthropogenic global change by proposing the use of near-surface optical remote sensing approaches paired with emerging wireless sensor network (WSN) technologies in order to evaluate changing forest seasonality and succession patterns, specifically in the semi-arid tropics and sub-tropics. Climate change is expected to affect terrestrial ecosystems through bottom-up control of primary productivity by extending or decreasing growing season length in seasonally photosynthetic vegetation. Human land use imposes top-down control over ecosystems by modifying disturbance regimes, with subsequent ecosystem regeneration depending on land use policy and management. The interplay between bottom-up climate forces and top-down anthropogenic forces on tropical dry forest (TDF) ecosystem recovery and productivity is poorly understood and is an underlying theme in this thesis. As such, this thesis introduces and assesses the novel application of WSN technology for spatio-temporal micrometeorological characterization and near-surface optical remote sensing of deciduous broadleaf forest canopy photosynthetic dynamics. The results reveal major benefits as well as challenges in the synergistic use of optical in-situ and satellite observation platforms for monitoring leaf phenology and secondary succession processes in deciduous forests, with case studies from the boreal and tropical dry broadleaf forests. Chapter one reviews the motivations behind the methods and experiments presented in this thesis. Chapter two reveals how low-power wireless data transmission is influenced by seasonal changes in boreal forest leaf phenology and weather conditions to help improve WSN designs for forestry applications. Chapter three describes local meteorological drivers of leaf phenology in detail for a Brazilian TDF in the state of Minas Gerais, and further explores how sub-canopy climate moderation effects are influenced by secondary forest stand age and extreme drought seasonality in order to characterize TDF microclimatic ecosystem services and better understand drought risk factors for seedling establishment and tree recruitment in future TDFs. Chapter four investigates the correlations between remotely sensed and near-surface hyper-temporal observations of TDF phenology in the context of future change detection for climate driven shifts in TDF productivity, revealing significant limitations in MODIS vegetation greenness time series for phenology monitoring in TDFs. Finally, chapter five reviews the significance and main contributions of these experiments. The experimental results presented here may be specific to tropical dry and boreal forest ecosystems, but the methods and ideas apply to all forest ecosystems in order to improve environmental monitoring technologies and our understanding of vegetation seasonality and secondary forest succession in our rapidly changing global environment.

Several terms have been used for this vegetation type such as seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF), tropical dry deciduous forest, monsoon forest, caatinga, cuabal, etc. More than any other factor, the lack of precipitation during a prolonged portion of the year is what produces true dry forest, an ecosystem type characterized by plants and animals with specific adaptations to survive the long dry season. Deciduousness is the single most important adaptation among plants to the extended droughts. Most of the trees drop their leaves after the rains end, and essentially halt photosynthesis, as they would otherwise be unable to survive the water loss during the dry season. TDFs are subject to intensive anthropogenic disturbances and are among the most at-risk ecosystems in the world. In order to assess the conservation status of this forest type, information is required on its distribution pattern, climate, the structure and functional traits of its vegetation, phenology, strategies for coping with drought and nutrient poverty, and disturbances and their effects. In this book, we review important studies on TDFs around the globe, particularly those in the northern dry deciduous forests of India. We put forward the claim that those TDFs that experience drought and arise on nutrient-poor sites feature adaptations such as deciduousness, as well as a variety of nutrient conservation strategies. They also experience biotic disturbances, which can result in fragmentation and ecosystem conversion, and therefore exhibit changes in biomass, productivity, and soil microbial biomass, etc.

Book excerpt: The need for accurate information on the state and evolution of tropical forest types at regional and continental scales is widely recognized, particularly to analyze the forest diversity and dynamics, to assess degradation and deforestation processes and to better manage these natural resources. Here we document the approach that was developed by JRC to map and monitor the extent of moist tropical forests and their changes (degradation, deforestation and regrowth) over the last three decades (1990-2020) at fine spatial resolution (30 m × 30 m). The approach is based on the analysis of each valid observation from the Landsat archive and allows to capture disturbances with a short-duration appearance on satellite imagery such as selective logging, fires, and severe weather events (hurricanes, dryness). This new approach allows characterizing the sequential dynamics of forest cover changes by providing transition stages from the initial observation period to the most recent year (2019 for this report). For the first time at the pantropical scale the occurrence and extent of forest degradation can be documented on an annual basis in addition to the monitoring of deforestation. After a short introduction (chapter 1), this technical report describes the study area (chapter 2), the input data (chapter 3), the method that has been developed (chapter 4), and the outcomes of this study (chapter 5). A discussion is also provided regarding the specificities and added value of the outcomes (chapter 6), and the known limitations and future expected improvements (chapter 7). This new pan-tropical scale deforestation and forest degradation monitoring system will contribute to the EU Observatory on deforestation, forest degradation, changes in the world's forest cover, and associated drivers, which is an action being implemented in the framework of the Communication from the Commission to step up EU action to protect and restore the World's forests (COM(2019) 352).
