Book excerpt: The well documented increase in the use of high performance composites as structural materials in aerospace components is continuously raising the demands in terms of dynamic performance, structural integrity, reliable life monitoring systems and adaptive actuating abilities. Current technologies address the above issues separately; material property tailoring and custom design practices aim to the enhancement of dynamic and damage tolerance characteristics, whereas life monitoring and actuation is performed with embedded sensors that may be detrimental to the structural integrity of the component. This publication explores the unique properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) as an additive in the matrix of Fibre Reinforced Plastics (FRP), for producing structural composites with improved mechanical performance as well as sensing/actuating capabilities. The successful combination of the CNT properties and existing sensing actuating technologies leads to the realization of a multifunctional FRP structure. The current volume presents the state of the art research in this field. The contributions cover all the aspects of the novel composite systems, i.e. modeling from nano to macro scale, enhancement of structural efficiency, dispersion and manufacturing, integral health monitoring abilities, Raman monitoring, as well as the capabilities that ordered carbon nanotube arrays offer in terms of sensing and/or actuating in aerospace composites.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes have been used as sensors in glass fiber/epoxy laminates for monitoring damage under fatigue loading. Carbon nanotubes are embedded in epoxy resin. The modified resin is infused between glass fibers to make composites. Silver paste electrodes are deposited on the surface of the laminate. Changes in electrical resistance are measured along several in-plane and through-thickness positions of the laminate. The changes in resistance are compared with the strain changes measured by strain gages. It is found that the changes in electrical resistance are sensitive to the degradation in the composite laminate. The electrical resistance method is proved to be more reliable in detecting damage in CNT incorporated GFRP composites than strain measurements as it senses the initiation of damage earlier than strain measurement. Among the in-plane and through- thickness resistance response, the through-thickness response can represent the initiation of damages more sensitively and quickly. This technique may be used to provide effective in-situ monitoring of damages in composites.

Their adaptability to different situations and desirable properties attracted many industries. In the automotive industry the demand for lighter weight components is increasing day by day. Carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy composites are making inroads used in the automotive industry because of their superior properties such as high specific strength and stiffness, and chemical resistance. Since epoxy resins are brittle in nature, their toughness can be enhanced by reactive liquid rubbers and inorganic fillers. In this study carbon fiber reinforced composites were manufactured using epoxy resin modified by reactive liquid rubber particles carboxyl terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) and nanosilica. Since fatigue failure of composite material is a complex phenomenon; the major aim of this study is to examine the effect of CTBN, nanosilica and hybrid (CTBN and nanosilica) under axial tension- tension fatigue performance. This research was first initiated by performing mechanical characterization (tensile and flexural) on neat, rubber and nanosilica modified resin specimens. Carbon fiber-reinforced nanomodified epoxy composite panels were manufactured by Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM). To obtain a qualitative dispersion of rubber particles and nanoparticles in resin, centrifugal planetary mixer (THINKYTM) was utilized in this research. Two different concentrations of rubber and nanoparticle particles were tested under tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear loadings. Then the data was compared against a control (0 wt% of rubber particles and nanoparticles) composite. Based on mechanical characterization, one particular loading was selected for fatigue studies. Extensive axial tension-tension fatigue testing was performed on control, rubber modified, nano modified and hybrid composites.

Book excerpt: An exploratory characterization program was conducted on one high-modulus unidirectional composite, carbon fiber reinforced epoxy. Existing test methods were used with minimum modification except in the cases of dynamic moduli and flexural fatigue strength where new methods were developed. The test methods were generally satisfactory. Two notable exceptions were the short-beam shear test for determining interlaminar shear strength and the flat plate test for static shear modulus.

Book excerpt: Thin-plated structures are used extensively in building construction, automobile, aircraft, shipbuilding and other industries because of a number of favourable factors such as high strength-weight ratio, development of new materials and processes and the availability of efficient analytical methods. This class of structure is made by joining thin plates together at their edges and they rely for their rigidity and strength upon the tremendous stiffness and load-carrying capacity of the flat plates from which they are made. Many of the problems encountered in these structures arise because of the effects of local buckling. The knowledge of various facets of this phenomenon has increased dramatically since the 1960s. Problem areas which were hitherto either too complex for rigorous analysis or whose subtleties were not fully realized have in these years been subjected to intensive study. Great advances have been made in the areas of inelastic buckling. The growth in use of lightweight strong materials, such as fibre-reinforced plastics has also been a contributory factor towards the need for advances in the knowledge of the far post-buckling range. The conference is a sequel to the international conference organised by the University of Strathclyde in December 1996 and this international gathering will provide the opportunity for discussion of recent developments and trends in design of thin-walled structures.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strain and damage sensing capabilities of a carbon fiber/epoxy composite subjected to monotonic and incremental cyclic flexural loading is investigated using the electrical resistance approach. The piezoresistive sensitivity of the carbon fiber/epoxy composites were first characterized using rectangular cross-section specimens. Then, application of the electrical resistance approach was extended to an I-shaped cross-section laminated composite under pure bending and then cantilever flexural loading. The change in the electrical resistance of the specimens was simultaneously monitored on both the tensile and compressive sides, while the specimens were tested under flexural loading. On the tensile side, the positive electrical resistance change showed a linear trend for small deformations (less than 0.3% strain) and increased in a nonlinear fashion for larger deformations. In contrast to the tensile side, the electrical resistance change on the compressive side showed a nonlinear and non-monotonic behavior. Initially, electrical resistance changes decreased for low values of deformation (less than 0.3% strain), leveled off at the onset of the specimen's compressive failure, and then increased up to complete failure. Correlations between abrupt changes in electrical resistance change and indications of composite damage are confirmed with scanning electron microscopy. Carbon fibers in both rectangular and I-shaped cross-section carbon/epoxy specimens are capable of sensing tensile and compressive strain, and adequately capture the onset and progression of failure by fiber micro-buckling, formation of kink bands, and delamination. The cross-section properties (e.g. stiffness and layup sequence) affect the piezoresistive and damage sensitivity, with the stiffer I-shaped cross-section being less sensitive to than standard specimens of rectangular cross-section. Electrical resistance changes under cyclic flexural loading for both tensile and compressive sides showed a permanent change with applied deformation after each cycle indicating first the release of residual stresses and then damage. The response of the I-shaped beam tested under pure bending is shown to correspond to the same electromechanical response under cantilever flexural loading.
