Book excerpt: Rising gas bubbles in bubbling fluidized beds are important for all hydrodynamics related phenomena, e.g. mass transfer, gas bypassing, heat transfer, gas-solids mixing, etc. However, still many interactions of bubbles with specific operation conditions in fluidized beds are unknown. In this work, fluidized beds with vertical heat exchangers are investigated. Vertical heat exchangers are in this case used to remove the heat of reaction from the exothermal methanation reaction for the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from wood. Several vertical tube bank configurations varying in their diameter, tube-to-tube spacing, and arrangement (square vs. triangular) have been immersed into a lab-scale fluidized bed. By means of optical probing and pressure fluctuation measurements, their influence on the rising gas bubbles has been evaluated by means of statistical tools. Findings from these experiments are furthermore used to develop a modified approach to scale up fluidized beds with vertical internals.

Book excerpt: In Fluid CokingTM or Fluid Catalytic Cracking liquid feedstocks are injected into a bed of fluidized particles. Uniform distribution of liquid feed on fluidized particles increases the yield of valuable products and improves operability in these processes. Contact between the injected liquid and the bed particles can be greatly affected by the liquid properties and local bed hydrodynamics. The impact of parameters such as liquid properties, fluidization velocity, nozzle atomization gas flowrate, nozzle location and inclination were investigated on the distribution of liquid sprayed into a fluidized bed with a reliable and fast response capacitance meter. This method was also extended to monitor the agglomerate breakup kinetics. The research showed that a liquid whose viscosity and contact angle on the surface of solid particles are similar to the liquid used in the high temperature commercial reactors provides a good simulation of liquid distribution into a fluidized bed with room temperature experiments. VarsolTM was selected for a cold simulation of Fluid CokersTM. The research also presents an innovative design of a cold model fluidized bed to investigate the impact of the velocity of particles, relative to the spray nozzle, on solidliquid contact since it varies greatly with location in actual Fluid Cokers. This design provided an inexpensive and accessible means to study the effect of the relative velocity between the spray jet and particles independently of other bed hydrodynamic characteristics. The investigation found that distribution of the injected liquid in the bed can be improved by either increasing the atomization gas flowrate or, preferably, the fluidization velocity. Study of nozzles at different locations and inclinations identified the dominant effects of bed hydrodynamics at the nozzle and jet tips on the distribution of liquid on solid particles. A model for the interactions between sprayed liquid and fluidized particles was developed for two cases: a) a stationary spray nozzle and no net motion of the fluidized solids and b) a moving nozzle with a relative velocity between spray nozzle and particles. The model results were compared with experimental results and were found to provide consistent information on the liquid concentration of the agglomerates.

Book excerpt: "This research focuses on validating our newly developed mechanistic scale-up methodology for hydrodynamics similarity of gas-solid fluidized bed reactors (FBRs) by implementing our advanced non-invasive measurement techniques which are gamma ray computed tomography (CT) and radioactive particle tracking (RPT) that measure local hydrodynamic parameters. Experiments were carried out in two fluidized beds of 14 cm and 44 cm in diameter using air as the gas phase and particles of different materials. Since in these reactors the gas dynamic dictates the bed hydrodynamics, the new mechanistic scale-up methodology is based on maintaining similar or closer time averaged radial profiles of gas holdups at a height within the bed in two different gas-solid fluidized beds in order to achieve local and global similarity of dimensionless hydrodynamic parameters. The findings validate the achievement of hydrodynamics similarity in local solids and gas holdups distribution obtained by CT technique and in three dimension local solids velocities, solids shear stresses, normal stresses, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent eddy diffusivities measured by RPT technique. Also in this work we found based on local hydrodynamic parameters obtained by using CT and RPT that the scale-up method of matching a set of dimensionless groups is invalid for hydrodynamics similarity and the proposed dimensionless groups are insufficient to capture the key phenomena in these reactors. In addition, we studied the effect of bed height and particles type, size, and density on gas holdup, particle velocity, and turbulent parameters measured by these advanced techniques"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: Thermo-Hydrodynamic Design of Fluidized Bed Combustors: Estimating Metal Wastage is a unique volume that finds that the most sensitive parameters affecting metal wastage are superficial fluidizing velocity, particle diameter, and particle sphericity. Gross consistencies between disparate data sources using different techniques were found when the erosion rates are compared on the same basis using the concept of renormalization. The simplified mechanistic models and correlations, when validated, can be used to renormalize any experimental data so they can be compared on a consistent basis using a master equation.

Book excerpt: "This research studied the scale-up, flow regimes identification and hydrodynamics of fluidized beds using 6-inch and 18- inch diameter columns and different particles. One of the objectives was to advance the scale-up of gas-solid fluidized bed reactors by developing a new mechanistic methodology for hydrodynamic similarity based on matching the radial or diameter profile of gas phase holdup, since gas dynamics dictate the hydrodynamics of these reactors. This has been successfully achieved. However, the literature reported scale-up methodology based on matching selected dimensionless groups was examined and it was found that it was not easy to match the dimensionless groups and hence, there was some deviation in the hydrodynamics of the studied two different fluidized beds. A new technique based on gamma ray densitometry (GRD) was successfully developed and utilized to on-line monitor the implementation of scale-up, to identify the flow regime, and to measure the radial or diameter profiles of gas and solids holdups. CFD has been demonstrated as a valuable tool to enable the implementation of the newly developed scale-up methodology based on finding the conditions that provide similar or closer radial profile or cross sectional distribution of the gas holdup. As gas velocity increases, solids holdup in the center region of the column decreases in the fully developed region of both 6 inch and 18 inch diameter columns. Solids holdup increased with the increase in the particles size and density. Upflowing particles velocity increased with the gas velocity and became steeper at high superficial gas velocity at all axial heights where the center line velocity became higher than that in the wall region. Smaller particles size and lower density gave larger upflowing particles velocity. Minimum fluidization velocity and transition velocity from bubbly to chum turbulent flow regimes were found to be lower in 18 inch diameter column compared to those obtained in 6 inch diameter column. Also the absolute fluctuation of upflowing particles velocity multiplied by solids holdups as one of the terms for solids mass flux estimation was found to be larger in 18-inch diameter column than that in 6-inch diameter column using same particles size and density"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bench-scale, two-dimensional multi-compartmentalized fluidized reactor was designed and studies of hydrodynamic behavior of fluidization of struvite pellets were performed. Also size growth distribution tests were analyzed qualitatively. The study validated a previously-proposed theory, concerning the relationship between dynamic pressure drop and upflow velocity as well the experimental protocol to determine the minimum fluidization velocity. Findings indicated that the mixture of two-sized particles would behave rather independently of each other, before the bed expansion. It was suggested that bed height measurement could be another promising method to pinpoint minimum fluidization velocity as there is a sharp bed surface "waking episode" during the process of a packed bed being gradually fluidized. Bed expansion equations for the prediction of void fraction as a function of superficial upflow velocity or vice versa, have been established for 4 groups of monosize particles, as well as two mixtures of two-sized particles. The equation constants did not agree well with previously established ones. The two layers of segregated mixture bed had congruent linear relationships between the logarithmic void fraction and logarithmic upflow velocity. It was found that a mixture does not always go through segregation, but only when the size difference is large enough. Size growth distribution tests were performed under different hydrodynamic configurations as well as seeding conditions. Conclusions can be made that a bed with uniformly- distributed particle void fractions and higher mixing energy input (upflow velocity), normally has better performance of struvite growth in size.
