Book Synopsis Nationalism and Hybridity in Mongolia by : Uradyn Erden Bulag
Download or read book Nationalism and Hybridity in Mongolia written by Uradyn Erden Bulag and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uradyn Bulag presents a unique study of what it means to be Mongolian today. Mongolian nationalism, emerging from a Soviet-dominated past and facing a Chinese-threatened future, has led its adherents to stress purity in an effort to curb the outside influences on Mongolian culture andidentity. This sort of nationalism views the Halh (the 'indigenous' Mongols) as 'pure' Mongols, and other Mongol groups as 'impure'. This Halh-centrism excites and exploits fears that Mongolia will be swallowed by China; it stands in opposition to pan-Mongolism, the view that links between Mongolsof all kinds should be strengthened. Bulag draws on an abundance of illuminating research findings to argue that Mongols are facing a choice between a purist, racialized nationalism, inherited from Soviet discourses of nationalism, and a more open, adaptive nationalism which accepts diversity, hybridity, and multiculturalism. He calls into question the idea of Mongolia as a homogeneous place and people, and urges that unity should be sought through acknowledgement of diversity.

Book Synopsis Bounty from the Sheep by : T͡Sėrėndashiĭn Namkhaĭni͡ambuu
Download or read book Bounty from the Sheep written by T͡Sėrėndashiĭn Namkhaĭni͡ambuu and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2000 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the autobiography of a Mongolian herdsman who became a hero in his own country. Born in 1948, Namkhainyambuu has experienced collectivisation, the period of 'high socialism', and then the demise of the negdels (collectives) in 1991-92. Written in direct, unaffected style, the autobiography reveals the values and respect for knowledge and hard work of an 'individualist' in a collective economy. The book is not just a reflection on the Mongolian pastoral life over the past half-century: it also describes kinship ties, the rigours of a herding life, the relationship between the Communist Party and the Mongol shepherd, and the unique skills of a successful herder. This is a unique account of a vanished era. The Introduction provides a valuable contextualisation of the Autobiography in relation to Mongolian historical and economic changes. Namkhainyambuu's Manual for Herders, which is translated in the Appendix, offers insight into the knowledge and sophistication required in the herding economy."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Semi-Presidentialism Outside Europe by : Robert Elgie
Download or read book Semi-Presidentialism Outside Europe written by Robert Elgie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-06-11 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first academic study of the impact of semi-presidentialism in emerging democracies outside of Europe. Semi-presidentialism is where there is both a directly-elected fixed-term president and a prime minister who is responsible to the legislature. For the most part, semi-presidentialism is seen as being a risky choice for new democracies because it can create potentially destabilizing competition between the president and prime minister. And yet, there are now more than fifty semi-presidential countries in the world. Moreover, many of these countries are in Africa, the former Soviet Union and Asia, often in places where democracy has yet to establish a firm foundation. This study begins with a chapter that discusses the advantages and disadvantages of semi-presidentialism and provides the theoretical framework for a wide-ranging series of country chapters presented in the second part of the book. Written by country/area specialists, the case studies highlight the political processes at work in young semi-presidential democracies. Semi-Presidentialism Outside Europe will appeal to those researching and studying in the fields of comparative politics, development and democracy.
