Download or read book Dogen written by Steven Heine and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking collection of essays edited by Steven Heine, leading scholars of Buddhism from both sides of the Pacific explore the life and thought of Zen Master Dogen (1200-1253), the founder of the Japanese Soto sect. Through both textual and historical analysis, the volume shows Dogen in context of the Chinese Chan tradition that influenced him and demonstrates the tremendous, lasting impact he had on Buddhist thought and culture in Japan. Special attention is given to the Shobogenzo and several of its fascicles, which express D?gen's views on such practices and rituals as using supranormal powers (jinzu), reading the sutras (kankin), diligent training in zazen meditation (shikan taza), and the koan realized in everyday life (genjokoan). Dogen: Textual and Historical Studies also analyzes the historical significance of this seminal figure: for instance, Dogen's methods of appropriating or contrasting with Chan sources, as well as how Dogen was understood and examined in later periods, including modern times. This book is a crucial contribution to the advancement of specialized studies of Dogen, as well as to the Chan/Zen school in the context of East Asian religions and their social and historical trends.
Book Synopsis The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China by : Professor Yifa
Download or read book The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China written by Professor Yifa and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2009-08-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of Buddhist Monastic Codes in China contains the first complete translation of China’s earliest and most influential monastic code. The twelfth-century text Chanyuan qinggui (Rules of Purity for the Chan Monastery) provides a wealth of detail on all aspects of life in public Buddhist monasteries during the Sung (960–1279). Part One consists of Yifa’s overview of the development of monastic regulations in Chinese Buddhist history, a biography of the text’s author, and an analysis of the social and cultural context of premodern Chinese Buddhist monasticism. Of particular importance are the interconnections made between Chan traditions and the dual heritages of Chinese culture and Indian Buddhist Vinaya. Although much of the text’s source material is traced directly to the Vinayas and the works of the Vinaya advocate Daoan (312–385) and the Lü master Daoxuan (596–667), the Chanyuan qinggui includes elements foreign to the original Vinaya texts—elements incorporated from Chinese governmental policies and traditional Chinese etiquette. Following the translator’s overview is a complete translation of the text, extensively annotated.
Download or read book Dream Sutra written by Hingori and published by Hingori Sutras C/0 Pali Hills Tourist Hotel Pvt.Ltd.. This book was released on 2017-09-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dream Sutra – Unveiling Hidden Realms chronicles the experiences of many people who were helped and healed, guided and communicated with, by the dreamer within themselves – their spirit or astral body. The unifying thread between these people was that they had a common Guru – someone who could travel out-of-body at will, heal people and even provide insights into their future. The greatest attribute of their Guru was that he also moulded his disciples into Gurus, thereby attaining a universal status of a Mahaguru, i.e. a teacher of Gurus. The fact that even 25 years after his death, this Mahaguru still communicates with and guides his devotees and disciples via their dreams, lends itself to deepening our exploration of the spiritual realms as well as of after-death existence. The anecdotal content dotting this book’s landscape enables you to recognize the power of the dream language so that the metaphorical leads into the metaphysical. The question is – are you ready to believe in the power of dreams?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most people believe that money is organic and inevitable; we forget that money is just a tool created to perform certain functions. Book Synopsis A Gendered Approach to the Syrian Refugee Crisis by : Jane Freedman
Download or read book A Gendered Approach to the Syrian Refugee Crisis written by Jane Freedman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The refugee crisis that began in 2015 has seen thousands of refugees attempting to reach Europe, principally from Syria. The dangers and difficulties of this journey have been highlighted in the media, as have the political disagreements within Europe over the way to deal with the problem. However, despite the increasing number of women making this journey, there has been little or no analysis of women’s experiences or of the particular difficulties and dangers they may face. A Gendered Approach to the Syrian Refugee Crisis examines women’s experience at all stages of forced migration, from the conflict in Syria, to refugee camps in Lebanon or Turkey, on the journey to the European Union and on arrival in an EU member state. The book deals with women’s experiences, the changing nature of gender relations during forced migration, gendered representations of refugees, and the ways in which EU policies may impact differently on men and women. The book provides a nuanced and complex assessment of the refugee crisis, and shows the importance of analysing differences within the refugee population. Students and scholars of development studies, gender studies, security studies, politics and middle eastern studies will find this book an important guide to the evolving crisis.

Book Synopsis Mindfulness and Money by : Dominic J. Houlder
Download or read book Mindfulness and Money written by Dominic J. Houlder and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From two leading instructors in business and Buddhism comes a fresh approach to making peace with your finances and creating true abundance. It may seem contradictory that Buddhist teachers Kulananda and Dominic Houlder have also been highly successful in the business arena, but they have learned that Buddhist teachings do not require a life of poverty, and can indeed go hand-in-hand with wealth and prosperity. Mindfulness and Money brings to light the teachings of Buddha as they apply to the money part of life, and shares the stories of others who have found the Buddhist path to freedom, creativity, and abundance. Using the Buddhist Wheel of Life as a starting point, the authors explore the mechanism by which desire for money and material things is confining, and how mastery of desire can free us to live peacefully with our finances. Kulananda and Houlder offer five precepts for living on the Path of Abundance, including kindness, generosity, contentment, honesty, and awareness. Through prescriptive meditations, reflections, and exercises, we can begin to earn and spend more purposefully–the key to finding financial peace, whatever one’s income. An enlightening combination of practical wisdom and spirituality, Mindfulness and Money is a valuable asset for all seekers.
Book Synopsis Monks, Money, and Morality by : Christoph Brumann
Download or read book Monks, Money, and Morality written by Christoph Brumann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrantly engaging contemporary Buddhist lives, this book focuses on the material and financial relations of contemporary monks, temples, and laypeople. It shows that rather than being peripheral, economic exchanges are key to religious debate in Buddhist societies. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in countries ranging from India to Japan, including all three major Buddhist traditions, the book addresses the flows of goods and services between clergy and laity, the management of resources, the treatment of money, and the role of the state in temple economies. Along with documenting ritual and economic practices, these accounts deal with the moral challenges that Buddhist adherents are facing today, thereby bringing lived experience to the study of an often-romanticized religion.
