Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Skyrm makes complex financial scenarios accessible to all interested readers in an informative and entertaining manner. We can all learn something from this book.” —Thomas Peterffy, Chairman, CEO, and President of Interactive Brokers “Skyrm put together the story of MF Global like no one else could in providing the ultimate autopsy covering destructive financial engineering that’s played such a big role in our capital markets.” —Lawrence G. McDonald, New York Times best selling author of A COLOSSAL FAILURE OF COMMON SENSE “God is in the details...first come the reporters, then the lawyers. Skyrm’s book is the necessary antidote. Only someone who has ‘done’ it can explain it. Perhaps the best ‘counterfactual’ rationale for reading The Money Noose: If John Corzine had been able to before, there would likely have been no after.” —Stan Jonas, Managing Partner, Axiom Management Partners In 2010, President Barack Obama signed into law the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. MF Global was bankrupt less than a year after the law’s passage. THE MONEY NOOSE is a general accounting of the facts that led to MF Global’s collapse, as well as the story of the major players involved. It is a chaotic story, one in which individual actions taken in and of themselves are relatively minor. But the sum of those individual actions equal the same end result. This book is designed to tell the story of MF Global, what went wrong and how things came to an abrupt end. In those regards, it’s an incredible story.

How, then, can investors protect themselves from this outcome? The best answer is education. Book excerpt: Introducing a bold new Western series from Eric Red, the acclaimed author and writer of such blockbuster films as The Hitcher, Near Dark, and Blue Steel. MEET JOE NOOSE. A GOOD BOUNTY HUNTER WITH A BAD ATTITUDE. In the cutthroat world of bounty hunters, Joe Noose is as honest as they come. Which isn’t saying much. Just look at his less-than-honest colleagues. They framed Joe for a murder they committed. They made sure Joe’s face wound up on a wanted poster. Now they’re gonna hunt Joe down and collect the reward money. There’s just one problem: Joe Noose thinks it’s his bounty. It’s his reward. And it’s their funeral . . . Praise for Eric Red’s The Guns of Santa Sangre and The Wolves 0f El Diablo “Blood-soaked weird west story . . . Red places a premium on action. Readers will enjoy.” —Publishers Weekly “Readers will rediscover an Old West genre.”—True West “In the Old West, there are bad guys and even badder guys. But Eric Red’s are the biggest baddest of all.”—Jack Ketchum, author of Off Season “Bloody fights, desert vistas (and) a touch of romance make this a fast-paced adventure . . . should appeal to fans.” —Library Journal

When we look at the crime that destroys a community, the only ones to blame are the men that heads the community. The noose was symbolic of hatred and fear which was imposed upon the black race during earlier years. But now the only ones that are imposing fear and are destroying scores of black families are the black males themselves.

Book excerpt: N is for Noose is the fourteenth in the Kinsey Millhone mystery series by Sue Grafton. Sometimes I think about how odd it would be to catch a glimpse of the future, a quick view of events lying in store for us. Some moments we saw would make no sense at all and some, I suspect, would frighten us beyond our endurance . . . Early spring in the Sierra Nevada, bringing the usual driving sleet and snow. Private investigator Kinsey Millhone is on her way west when she detours into Nota Lake (pop. 2356) to check out a new client. And encounters a chill she can scarcely believe. Only six weeks have passed since sheriff’s detective Tom Newquist died of a heart attack. His widow is sure he was keeping secrets from her just before he died – and she hires Kinsey to find out exactly what. But all Kinsey can uncover is that Newquist led an exemplary life, so what could he possibly have to conceal? And why has the town, to the last threatening redneck, closed ranks on her? Kinsey’s on the point of giving up. Until she discovers a chilling new clue: a childish drawing of a thick length of rope – fashioned into a hangman’s noose . . .

Book excerpt: A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year In August 1862, after suffering decades of hardship, broken treaties, and relentless encroachment on their land, the Dakota leader Little Crow reluctantly agreed that his people must go to war. After six weeks of fighting, the uprising was smashed, thousands of Indians were taken prisoner by the US army, and 303 Dakotas were sentenced to death. President Lincoln, embroiled in the most devastating period of the Civil War, personally intervened to save the lives of 265 of the condemned men, but in the end, 38 Dakota men would be hanged in the largest government-sanctioned execution in U.S. history. Writing with uncommon immediacy and insight, Scott W. Berg details these events within the larger context of the Civil War, the history of the Dakota people and the subsequent United States–Indian wars, and brings to life this overlooked but seminal moment in American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All groups tell stories, but some groups have the power to impose their stories on others, to label others, stigmatize others, paint others as undesirables—and to have these stories presented as scientific fact, God’s will, or wholesome entertainment. Watermelons, Nooses, and Straight Razors examines the origins and significance of several longstanding antiblack stories and the caricatures and stereotypes that support them. Here readers will find representations of the lazy, childlike Sambo, the watermelon-obsessed pickaninny, the buffoonish minstrel, the subhuman savage, the loyal and contented mammy and Tom, and the menacing, razor-toting coon and brute. Malcolm X and James Baldwin both refused to eat watermelon in front of white people. They were aware of the jokes and other stories about African Americans stealing watermelons, fighting over watermelons, even being transformed into watermelons. Did racial stories influence the actions of white fraternities and sororities who dressed in blackface and mocked black culture, or employees who hung nooses in their workplaces? What stories did the people who refer to Serena Williams and other dark-skinned athletes as apes or baboons hear? Is it possible that a white South Carolina police officer who shot a fleeing black man had never heard stories about scary black men with straight razors or other weapons? Antiblack stories still matter. Watermelons, Nooses, and Straight Razors uses images from the Jim Crow Museum, the nation’s largest publicly accessible collection of racist objects. These images are evidence of the social injustice that Martin Luther King Jr. referred to as “a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be exposed to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.” Each chapter concludes with a story from the author’s journey, challenging the integrity of racial narratives.
