Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Money and Banking The present edition of Money and Banking has been pre pared with two primary purposes in view: firstly, the pre sentation of a fuller treatment of the subject of banking, especially of the banking systems of the chief countries of the world, than was given in previous editions, and secondly the rearrangement and restatement of portions of the sub ject matter of previous editions. To these ends the entire book has been rewritten with the exception of Chapters I, II, III, XVI and XVII which, with slight modifications, are reprints of Chapters 1, II, III, XIV and XV of the old editions. Chapters VI, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV and XV are entirely new, and Chapters IV, V, VII, VIII, and IX embody the substance of Chapters IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, XI, XII and XIII of former editions with modifications, rearrangements and considerable new material. Additions have been made to the references so as to in clude recent books, but no attempt has been made to give complete bibliographies of the subjects treated. The refer ences have been selected with the needs of American students primarily in view. As in previous editions those at the close of the chapters are sometimes abbreviated, full titles being given in the Appendix. When an author's name with out title is given, reference is made to the first book listed under the name in the Appendix. Money and Banking examines the role the banking system plays in individual financial activities and considers the monetary policymaking that shapes the world’s financial system. A highly respected teacher--and a leading expert on macroeconomic forecasting, with several years of experience at the Federal level--Croushore makes the personal and the public relevant and interesting to students. The text’s shorter, more focused approach addresses the modern framework of today’s financial system, in which both financial markets and banks play important roles. Designed to appeal to a range of learners, the pedagogical features include over 130 figures and 20 full-color photos and cartoons. The ancillary program, written entirely by the author, provides a well-integrated set of learning tools and teaching resources. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis of 2008 ushered in a system of informal decision-making in the grey zone between economics and politics. Legitimized by a rhetoric of emergency, ad hoc bodies have usurped democratically elected governments. In line with the neoliberal credo, the recent crisis has been used to realize the politically impossible and to re-align executive power with the interests of the finance industry. In this important book, Joseph Vogl offers a much longer perspective on these developments, showing how the dynamics of modern finance capitalism have always rested on a complex and constantly evolving relationship between private creditors and the state. Combining historical and theoretical analysis, Vogl argues that over the last three centuries, finance has become a "fourth estate," marked by the systematic interconnection of treasury and finance, of political and private economic interests. Against this historical background, Vogl explores the latest phase in the financialization of government, namely the dramatic transfer of power from states to markets in the latter half of the 20th century. From the liberalization of credit and capital markets to the privatization of social security, he shows how policy has actively enabled a restructuring of the economy around the financial sector. Political systems are "imprisoned" by the regime of finance, while the corporate model suffuses society, enclosing populations in the production of financial capital. The Ascendancy of Finance provides valuable and unsettling insight into the genesis of modern power and where it truly resides.
