Book Synopsis Autour de l'extrême littéraire by : Alastair Hemmens
Download or read book Autour de l'extrême littéraire written by Alastair Hemmens and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extreme is an essential aspect of contemporary experience. Thrill-seekers spend the weekend in the search of the adrenaline rush of “extreme sports”. In the political arena, the world has begun to rediscover the split between the “extreme” left and the “extreme” right. Through 24-hour rolling news, images of violence, torture and war are televised unremittingly into the living room; while the Internet places hardcore pornography, snuff film and cannibalism within easy reach of anyone with a personal computer or a smartphone. The “extreme” has even become a quality companies seek to associate with the most banal of commodities such as ice cream and hair gel. These different manifestations of extremity suggest a contradictory, even paradoxical, relationship with the “extreme”. The contributors to this book explore how writing in French, from the Middle Ages to the present day, has interrogated extremity. Taken together, these essays demonstrate that the quality of the extreme can be applied to a great number of texts for different reasons and from myriad perspectives. Moreover, the extreme is revealed as a quality both distinct from, and in tension with, the crossing of boundaries associated with transgression. It is a movement towards and away from a centre of radiation that escapes cultural norms without necessarily reinforcing them. This sensation of rushing and wandering outside the boundaries of what is considered safe and normal provides the extreme with its adrenaline-charged response of excitement or horror. The analyses contained in this volume consider a number of manifestations of the “extrême littéraire”. The ambiguities of gender in medieval romance are explored in the context of the Arthurian court. The 19th century is examined through the prose poems of Baudelaire and the littérature sauvage of the Zutistes. The difficulties of writing the trauma of war and genocide in the 20th century are discussed through the work of Jorges Semprún and Agota Kristof. The contemporary extreme in French literature is examined in the autofiction of Christine Angot, the work of Annie Ernaux and Catherine Millet, the controversial novels of Michel Houellebecq, and the worldwide influence of the Marquis de Sade on writing today. Whilst the “extrême littéraire” may have a wide variety of expressions in French literature, it is always outside, beyond and far from the centre of our everyday experience. It shocks us, excites us and horrifies us, often all at once. This book seeks to provide an insight into how and why the extreme has fascinated, and continues to fascinate, the French literary imagination.

Book Synopsis J.M.G. Le Clézio Et la Métaphore Exotique by : Bruno Thibault
Download or read book J.M.G. Le Clézio Et la Métaphore Exotique written by Bruno Thibault and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2009 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J.M.G.

Book Synopsis Saussure's Third Course of Lectures on General Linguistics (1910-1911) by : R. Harris
Download or read book Saussure's Third Course of Lectures on General Linguistics (1910-1911) written by R. Harris and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-23 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notes taken by Saussure's student Emile Constantin were not available to the editors of the published Cours de linguistique générale (1916), and came to light only after the second world war. They have never been published in their entirety. The third and last course of lectures, of which Constantin kept this very full record, is generally considered to represent a more advanced version of Saussure's teaching than the earlier two. It is clear that Constantin's notebooks offer a text which differs in a number of significant respects from the Cours published by Saussure's original editors, and bring forward ideas which do not emerge in the 1916 publication. They constitute unique evidence concerning the final stages of Saussure's thinking about language. This edition of the notes is accompanied by an introduction and a full English translation of the text. There has been no attempt made by Komatsu and Harris, to turn the English into readable prose. Constantin's notes, even as revised by their author, retain the infelicities, repetitions, abruptness - occasionally incoherences - that betray the circumstances of their origin. The volume constitutes an important landmark in the history of modern linguistics and provides essential documentation for all scholars and libraries specializing in the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World: Our world suffers from constant unrest; changes are taking place at all levels. Politics and religion do not seem offering any hope. No one knows where to turn to; life is more and more threatening. The solution seems to be farther. The nuclear perspective is considered, and it is gaining ground. Nations are seeking for protection in sophisticated weapons and in their arsenals of murderous arms. Man is looking for solutions all over the place. Some specialists and scientists offer a utopian world, a terrestrial paradise, by means of modern technology. Despite everything, they are going more and more away from the true happiness. Is there something to turn to for finding the solution? The kingdom of God will come to sweep out the reign of Satan in the life of man to give to the world a tangible proof of his love. Final Plan of God for the World gives the key to this problem: the kingdom of God. May your will be done!

Book Synopsis Etudes sur le grand domaine carolingien by : Jean-Pierre Devroey
Download or read book Etudes sur le grand domaine carolingien written by Jean-Pierre Devroey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-28 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of the large estate of Carolingian Europe and the role it played in the evolution of Frankish society and economy are the themes of this volume. The first group of articles focus on documentary evidence, especially the polyptychs and their interpretation. Though there is insufficient material for any true quantitive history, Professor Devroey argues that the evidence points to demographic expansion, coupled with the exploitation of new agricultural methods and crops, and a reliance on the family as the unit of production. Further studies relate these estates to the commercial networks of the area, from a local to an international level. A final concern is to demonstrate that the large estate formed a key component of the Carolingian rulers’ aim to establish the ’bonum commune’ and a stable society, with assured food supplies, regulated markets and a just system of weights and measures.

Book Synopsis Bicultural Literature and Film in French and English by : Peter I. Barta
Download or read book Bicultural Literature and Film in French and English written by Peter I. Barta and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on literature and cinema in English or French by authors and directors not working in their native language. Artists with hybrid identities have become a defining phenomenon of contemporary reality following the increased mobility between civilisations during the postcolonial period and the waves of emigration to the West. Cinema and prose fiction remain the most popular sources of cultural consumption, not least owing to the adaptability of both to the new electronic media. This volume considers cultural products in English and French in which the explicitly multi-focal representation of authors' experiences of their native languages/cultures makes itself conspicuous. The essays explore work by the peripheral and those without a country, while problematising what might be meant by the widely used but not always well-defined term ‘bicultural’. The first section looks at films by such well-known filmmakers working in France as Bouchareb, Kechiche, Legzouli and Dridi, as well as the animated feature Persepolis. Here the focus is on the representation of human experience in spatial terms, exploring the appropriation of territory cohabited by ‘local’ people, newcomers and their children, haunted by the cultural memories of distant places. The second part is devoted to multicultural authors whose ‘native’ language was English, Russian, Polish, Hungarian or Spanish (Beckett, Herzen, Voyeikova, Triolet, Conrad, Hoffmann, Kristof, Dorfman), and their creative engagement with difference. A study of the emergence of multilingual writing in Montaigne and an autobiographical essay by Elleke Boehmer on growing up surrounded by English, Dutch, Afrikaans and Zulu frame the volume's chapters. The collection relishes the freedom provided by liberation from the confines of one language and culture and the delight in creative multilingualism. This book will be of significant interest to those studying the subject of biculturalism, as well as the fields of comparative literature and cinema.
