Book excerpt: There are few books that surprise their readers on every page-even fewer that show readers how to live. Boldly, the OUROH trilogy does both. Trevor and Trudy, siblings from Earth, take an unforgettable journey through these pages, a journey you will gladly take alongside them; they're the kind of inspiring characters that live and breathe on the page and live on in your mind and heart long after the story's final word. You can't help but root for and identify with them. Their journey is rich with the power of words and wishes, spoken and unspoken. It's a journey not only through time (recycled time), but past time; not only through our known universe, but past it to another, and another (Ouroh is the center of thirteen multiverses); not only through our minds and senses, but past what we've been conditioned to perceive to a whole new way of seeing and knowing. This epic tale has been created by a master storyteller and modern-day philosopher, one who understands that acknowledging life's interconnectedness and relying on present-moment awareness are the keys to true happiness. But you won't be pummeled with speeches or agendas; instead, this wisdom is skillfully woven into the narrative's fabric. Trevor and Trudy are joined by Ideas and Imagination, their Ouroh counterparts, as well as an unforgettable cast of supporting characters, including the fascinating Planimals (part plant, part animal, in a myriad of astounding varieties). Thrumming with heart-pounding tension and suspense, the story asks: Will the children save the multiverses from an errant word? Will they "right the word that went wrong"? In a time when people complain that there is nothing new under the sun, it is quite a rare achievement to discover a book unlike any other. The OUROH trilogy is a true gift indeed.

He has to turn those lessons into 10 chapters that will help boys make sense of the confusing world of girls. What choice does poor Liam have? Of course, nothing ever goes as planned. By the time his book is actually finished, more than a year has passed and Liam has learned a thing or two about girls all on his own. Book excerpt: Caterina Cammino is an attractive and reclusive thirty-five-year-old woman whose nightly ritual is to go to the beach and drink wine from the bar of her car. Though alcohol is her crutch and companion, it cant erase the memory of the summer of 1988 when she lost her innocence--and awoke to a scream. Tyler Beck is an intellectually gifted eighteen-year-old loner who has an invisible, magical cord above his right shoulder; he is also a former drug addict who was rehabilitated with the help of a counselor named Robie. After Robie dies, however, a distraught Beck exits his friends funeral and seeks refuge at the beachand in heroin. Their lives collide when Caterinas car strikes a trashcan that crashes into the semi-conscious Beck. When they both ask aloud for help, the grieving parts of themselves are transported to another dimension called 10-17. Caterina arrives in this dimension as her seventeen-year-old self, Cat, and there she meets Beck, whom she nicknames Ty. Once in this new world, set against a backdrop of Italy, they meet a Watcher named Miranda who tells them that they are in 10-17 for healing, even while their parallel lives are continuing on Earth. Miranda explains that the dimensions are spaced like slats on a window blind; she also tells the teenagers about a place called Thare, an Earth-like dimension populated by humans, but without suffering or addiction. While Beck readily embraces his love for the mature Caterina, she is conflicted over her feelings for a man half her age. Meanwhile, in Dimension 10-17, as Cat and Ty complete their lesson, they are torn over the choice that Miranda offers them: To go to the perfect world of Thare and leave the Earth and their families behind, or to return wholly to their Earthly selves...

Trouble's best friend, Electra, was taken from her home as a baby and was raised at a military academy, where she was trained to become a loyal StarLeague cadet. Now Electra is determined to rescue the other cadets so they can have normal childhoods instead of becoming lethal weapons, like her. Her plan? To infiltrate the academy as a senior student and then engineer an escape by the entire student body. Trouble knows they must help Electra carry out her plan. But when Electra goes missing, Trouble, determined to rescue the rescuer, goes undercover at the academy, even if it's not as easy as you'd think for a shapeshifter to pretend to be a military cadet. Especially when Trouble finds that the baby shapeshifter has come along. Now Trouble must do whatever it takes to save Electra and the other cadets--and figure out a strange mystery coming from the deep dark edges of space. Because something's coming...

Book excerpt: One of the most award-winning, critically acclaimed story writers working today, Antonya Nelson has a list of accolades that is astonishing for any writer, but especially for one as young as she. With her newest collection, Nelson once again proves herself worthy of her stellar reputation, delivering seven taut, striking stories and a brilliant novella, all exploring the tensions of troubled family relations. Nelson is an extraordinary chronicler of the fraught relationships between parents and children and husbands and wives. With her particular understanding of the threats and vulnerabilities of wild adolescence, as well as the complicated, persistent love that often lies dormant beneath the drama of rebellion, she illuminates the hidden corners of her characters' lives. The shy, shoplifting sixteen-year-old protagonist in the title novella is trying to understand how to become an adult while going through a year of family disaster. We watch as she dabbles in the same adult behaviors that so repulse her about her parents (binge drinking, sex) while maintaining so much of her adolescent insecurity and confusion. "Dick" is a moving story about a mother who, having lost her daughter to the vicissitudes of adolescence, has a compulsion to protect her innocent, preadolescent son from the aggressive and encroaching post-9/11 adult world. The homeless teen at the heart of "Eminent Domain" is a pampered Houston rich girl who has, for her own reasons, taken to the streets. Radiating an emotional intensity that unifies the entire collection, each of Nelson's stories both captivates and unnerves. As her characters run the gauntlet of often bewildering family tensions and trauma, she alternates hope and despair, resentment and love, in perfectly recognizable proportions. Weaving wonderful observation with quick wit and striking insight, Some Fun is a timely and provocative inventory of the state of family in America -- and proof of why Nelson is one of the most important writers at work today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this anthology of creative nonfiction, twenty-eight writers set out to discover what they know, and don't know, about the person they call Mother. Celebrated writers Samia Serageldin and Lee Smith have curated a diverse and insightful collection that challenges stereotypes about mothers and expands our notions of motherhood in the South. The mothers in these essays were shaped, for good and bad, by the economic and political crosswinds of their time. Whether their formative experience was the Great Depression or the upheavals of the 1970s, their lives reflected their era and influenced how they raised their children. The writers in Mothers and Strangers explore the reliability of memory, examine their family dynamics, and come to terms with the past. In addition to the editors, contributors include Belle Boggs, Marshall Chapman, Hal Crowther, Clyde Edgerton, Marianne Gingher, Jaki Shelton Green, Sally Greene, Stephanie Elizondo Griest, Jacquelyn Dowd Hall, Eldridge "Redge" Hanes, Lynden Harris, Randall Kenan, Phillip Lopate, Michael Malone, Frances Mayes, Jill McCorkle, Melody Moezzi, Elaine Neil Orr, Steven Petrow, Margaret Rich, Omid Safi, James Seay, Alan Shapiro, Bland Simpson, Sharon K. Book excerpt: About the Book Seventeen-year-old Hadley Hall attempted suicide and has been dealing with depression for over six months. After school ends and not speaking to her family about any of the events that happened, her oldest brother Emerson comes to town with his teammate, Weston. Weston himself has depression and teaches her how to deal with it without medication. He teaches her how to not let it define her. What makes this story most interesting is the pain, the feelings from herself and her family and friends, but also the relationship and love she finds in the person who knows very little about her. There are secrets along the way, problems she has to deal with, and speaking to her two brothers and Weston help Hadley achieve that. Lots of people have depression, and lots of people love love. Self-growth in the process only makes it more relatable. I hope readers take away how to handle things without the help of medication, that readers find ways themselves to deal with day to day problems, and find that suicide is not the way.

Book excerpt: Thirty-seven-year-old script supervisor Jared Dunkin, called J., is camping in the corner of his inherited house above Hollywood's Sunset Strip. In his move, he brought only his autograph collection and his Barcelona chairs. Orphaned and disconsolate, J. is doing nothing with his love of film and very little with his history degree. Out of the blue, he meets thirty-year-old Mary Ellen Higgen called Emmy while at a voting precinct on a February Tuesday and decides she might be the girl for him. But when he raves to his grandmother about Emmy, she warns him not to see the girl again although she doesn't say why. Everyone in Hollywood has a personal celebrity. For J., it's his grandmother, who came to Hollywood in the late forties as Miss South Dakota and third runner-up to Miss America. She made movies and married the head of make-up as he started the successful line of Ingénue Cosmetics. Emmy's celebrity is her late, swashbuckling, movie star grandfather who had made a film with J.'s Grandstar. Although they're in love, J. and Emmy may have too much in common. Just as he finds a career, J. finds his personal life spiraling out of control in a spectacular fashion worthy of a soap opera.
