Book Synopsis Being Yourself by : Diana Tietjens Meyers
Download or read book Being Yourself written by Diana Tietjens Meyers and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-02-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being yourself: living a life that is truly your own, that expresses your unique personality and your distinctive values. Many people want to live such a life. Being Yourself asks what it takes to do so. It examines questions about the self — the individual who acts — together with questions about self-expression — the relations between the self and action. It explains self-knowledge and self-direction in terms of a repertory of skills that gives people insight into who they are, who they want to be, and how they want to engage with the world. Unlike other accounts of self and action, Being Yourself takes into account the multidimensionality of the self — embodiment, interpersonal ties, nonconscious desires, and enculturation as well as rationality. It accents the ways in which atypical emotional responses, empathy, and oppositional imagery can contribute to moral understanding. It argues that repressive regimes cannot completely crush people's determination to live lives of their own, but it shows why it is vital to seek social changes that dismantle obstacles to this kind of life.
Book Synopsis Values in Education by : Graham Haydon
Download or read book Values in Education written by Graham Haydon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-15 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the fundamental aims and values underlying education? What values should education try to promote in a world of value pluralism? What is morality, and should schools teach it? In a secular society, how should schools treat the links between morality and religion? How should values enter into professional education and educational leadership? This book, an updated edition of Teaching about Values, will help the reader to think about these questions and many others concerning values in education. Drawing on philosophy without assuming knowledge of the subject, it is for teachers, students of education and anyone who recognises the importance of values in education.
Book Synopsis Love Song for the Life of the Mind by : Gene Fendt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love Song for the Life of the Mind develops the view of comedy that, the author argues, would have been set out in Aristotle's missing second book of Poetics. As such it is both a philosophical and a historical argument about Aristotle; and the theory of comedy it elucidates is meant to be trans-historically and trans-culturally accurate.

Download or read book Mole written by Steve Gronert Ellerhoff and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though moles are rarely seen, they live in close proximity to humans around the world. Gardeners and farmers go to great lengths to remove molehills from their fields and gardens; mole-catching has been a profession for the past two millennia. Moles are also close to our imagination, appearing in myths, fairy tales, and comic books as either wealthy, undesirable grooms or seekers of enlightenment. In Mole, Steve Gronert Ellerhoff examines moles in nature as well as their representation throughout history and across cultures. Balancing evolution and ecology with photographs and artworks, Ellerhoff provides a veritable mountain of new insight into this exceedingly private mammal.

Book Synopsis Ethical and Social Issues in Professional Education by : Celeste M. Brody
Download or read book Ethical and Social Issues in Professional Education written by Celeste M. Brody and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects and extends the great debates that schools, colleges, and universities are having in response to the profound moral conflicts and personal questions facing professionals today: What should we teach our students? What values should we communicate and nurture? What should be the role of the traditional liberal arts in professional education? How should schools and colleges respond to the demands of women and minorities for a more inclusive curriculum? The authors explore ongoing theoretical and practical considerations of graduate professional education through the ethical and social issues facing professionals in public service. Administrators, teachers, counselors, nurses, or lawyers are recognizing that they face similar questions about their personal and professional lives: Is it possible to sustain a set of fully human values as a practicing professional? As a member of a public organization, how does one deal with dilemmas involving conflicting priorities and ambiguous goals? The authors responses to these questions are presented as themes, describing connections between curriculum and pedagogy. They have designed an approach to ethical and social questions respectful of the contributions of adult learners and the need to provide diverse perspectives.

Download or read book Mole! written by Acōkamittiran̲ and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2005 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fictional events narrated in Mole! an English translation of Otran, a novel by Ashokamitran take place within a period of seven months, nearly all of them in the American Midwest. The narrator, a culturally rooted writer from Chennai, is transplanted amidst a motley group of fellow-writers from distant parts of the world, all of them as dangerously dislocated as him. Deprived of the language that has brought them fulfillment and distinction, these writers struggle to retain their place of precarious honour in a strange, unfamiliar and sometimes hostile environment. And in the background looms the endearing, if exasperating, landscape of twentieth-century America. Kalyan Raman s English translation illumines the subtle, spare strength of Ashokamitran s prose.

Book Synopsis Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years by : Sue Townsend
Download or read book Adrian Mole: The Cappuccino Years written by Sue Townsend and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “wickedly satirical, mad, ferociously farcical [and] subversive” angsty Brit of secret diary fame careens into his thirties (Daily Mail). I expect that by tomorrow I will have embellished the story and given myself a heroic status I do not deserve . . . Right now the truth is harrowing enough for aging, impotent intellectual Adrian Mole: He’s soon to be divorced; he hasn’t a clue what to do with his semi-stardom as a celebrity chef; his parents have become swingers (with whom is too shocking to go into now); his epic novel is still unpublished; his ex-flame Pandora is running for political office; and his younger sister has rebelled in the most distressingly common ways. But there’s one upside: Adrian’s son has inherited his mother’s unblemished skin. Is it any wonder that at 34¾ Adrian is still punishingly self-aware and willfully deluded about what he’s endured and what he’s yet to achieve? Struggling somewhere between breakthrough and breakdown, he’s telling his diary everything. The result? Adrian’s fifth Book of Revelation—and it’s “quite possibly, a classic” (Daily Mirror).
Book Synopsis Old Mole : Being the Surprising Adventures in England of Herbert Jocelyn Beenham by : Gilbert Cannan
Download or read book Old Mole : Being the Surprising Adventures in England of Herbert Jocelyn Beenham written by Gilbert Cannan and published by D. APPLETON AND COMPANY. This book was released on with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old Mole : Being the Surprising Adventures in England of Herbert Jocelyn Beenham He was called Old Mole because whenever he spied a boy cribbing, or larking, or reading a book that had no reference to the subject in hand, or eating sweets, or passing notes, he would cry out in a voice of thunder: “Ha! Art thou there, old mole?” Thrigsbian fathers who had suffered at his hands would ask their sons about Old Mole, and so his position was fortified by a sort of veneration. He [Pg 4]was one of those men who assume their definite shape and appearance in the early thirties, and thereafter give no clew to their age even to the most curious spinster’s inquisitiveness. Reference to the Calendar of his university shows that at the time of his catastrophe he cannot have been more than forty-eight. He was unmarried, not because he disliked women, but from indolence, obstinacy, combativeness, and a coarse strain in him which made him regard the female body, attire and voice as rather ridiculous. With married women he was ceremonious and polite: with the unmarried he was bantering. When he had been twenty years at the school he began jocularly to speak of it as his bride, and when he came to his twenty-fifth year he regarded it as his silver wedding. He was very proud when his Form presented him with a smoker’s cabinet and his colleagues subscribed for a complete edition of the works of Voltaire bound in vellum. Best of all was the fact that one of his boys, A. Z. Panoukian, an Armenian of the second generation (and therefore a thorough Thrigsbian), had won a scholarship at Balliol, the first since he had had charge of the Sixth. At Speech Day, when the whole school and their female relatives and the male parents of the prize-winners were gathered in the John Bright Hall, the Head Master would make a special reference to Panoukian and possibly to the happy coincidence of his performance with the attainment of Mr. Beenham’s fourth of a century in the service of [Pg 5]the pious and ancient foundation. It was possible, but unlikely, for the Head Master was a sentimentalist who made a point of presenting an arid front to the world lest his dignity should be undermined.
Book Synopsis The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole, 1999–2001 by : Sue Townsend
Download or read book The Lost Diaries of Adrian Mole, 1999–2001 written by Sue Townsend and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The trouble with trying to read passages from the Adrian Mole diaries aloud is that you find yourself laughing so hard you can’t go on” (Kansas City Star). I wish that I could relate that I have found happiness and contentment . . . but, alas, I cannot—but that is another story . . . “Probably the most successful comic literary creation of the past two decades” vents his justified rage in these journals once confiscated by authorities—only to be hijacked yet again by a fraudster named Sue Townsend (TheObserver). Though Adrian has finally found the courage to confront her, the literary parasite refuses to put down her Stolichnaya and come to the door. Now a professional turkey-plucker with his dreams of becoming a serious novelist more elusive than ever, and his teenage passions for Pandora all but faded, Adrian Mole has settled with his new wife in a rural pigsty that’s spitting distance from his appalling mother and her (fourth, is it?) husband. There are two consolations: He has a son who fears gym class (poor little bird legs!), and he’s readying his serial-killer comedy for production. But really, there’s little about the twenty-first century that makes Adrian feel secure. Adrian Mole’s continuing chronicle of angst has sold more than twenty million copies worldwide, and been adapted for television and staged as a musical—truly “a phenomenon” (The Washington Post).
