Book excerpt: "The phenomenon of adhesion appears in various applications of everyday life, ranging from PostIt NotesTM and Scotch TapeTM, to the assembly of aircraft and space shuttles. However, adhesion on the molecular scale is fundamentally different from the adhesion that we experience in the macroscopic world. While macroscopic objects require special adhesives or glues to bind them together, microsca1e and nanoscale objects and molecules commonly have a high affinity to adhere to each other. A detailed description of intermolecular forces is therefore of key importance in order to understand a wide range of phenomena, ranging from macroscopic properties of materials to molecular recognition. Two key aspects of the atomic force microscope (AFM), namely its sensitivity to sub-nanoNewton forces and its very sharp probe, offer the opportunity to measure interactions between very small numbers of molecules. Through chemical tailoring of both substrates and AFM probes with self-assembled mono layers (SAMs), measurements of forces acting between specific functional groups can be measured. Furthermore, the force required to rupture a single chemical bond can be obtained by a detailed analysis of the histograms of rupture forces. A new model was derived to examine the relationship between the various experimental variables and the shape of histograms of rupture forces when discrete chemical bonds are formed between the AFM probe and substrate. Calculations based on the model demonstrated that in measurements aimed at detecting single bond rupture forces, strict limits are put on the size of the AFM probe, the relative magnitude of the interfacial energies and the bond formation probability. These results were used in two experimental systems where the single bond rupture force was successfully measured: 0) the abstraction of a single Au-S complex from an Au coated AFM probe; and (ill the rupture of a single charge-transfer (cI) complex between tetramethylphenylenediamine (TMPO) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ). Measurements involving only one molecule at a time were conducted using polymer chains chemically grafted to the AFM probe and substrate. In these measurements, the effect of the solvent on the elasticity of the polyethylene-propylene oligomers was directly observed in the force-elongation profile"--Leaves iii-iv.

Increased attention towards organic semiconductors and materials is mainly due to flexibility they provide with respect to the properties of individual molecules and fabrication in desired shapes. Among n-type semiconductors, perylenetetracaboxylicdiimide (PTCDI), is gaining increasing attention due to its high photo and thermal stability. With the modification of side chains with different functionalities, one can tune the solubility of molecule in different solvent and the morphology of resultant molecular aggregates. Following work presents the use of PTCDI molecules with three different side chains attached to PTCDI core. We investigated the effect of different side chains on resultant morphology when fabricated through different processing techniques. Fabrication techniques applied are solution based processing and surface assisted solvent vapor annealing. The later technique provides a better control over the size and shape of resultant nanocrystals. We investigated the size and optical properties of nanocrystals formed with the help of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and near-field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). Through solution based and surface assisted solvent vapor annealing processes under different conditions, we have fabricated nanocrystals with different aspect ratios, size and shape. Currently we are working on investigation of electrical measurements for application of nanocrystals in real time electronic devices.

The nature of self-organization in these systems spans the continuum from simple crystallization of large molecules such as dendrimers and proteins, to assembly into large organized networks of nanometer-scale structures such as quantum dots or nanoparticles. In truth, self-organization in complex molecular systems has always been a central feature of many scientific disciplines including fields as diverse as structural biology, polymer science and geochemistry. But over the past decade, changes in those fields have often been marked by the degree to which researchers are using molecular-scale approaches to understand the hierarchy of structures and processes driven by this ordered assembly. At the same time, physical scientists have begun to use their knowledge of simple atomic and molecular systems to fabricate synthetic self-organized systems. This increasing activity in the field of self-organization is testament to the success of the physical and chemical sciences in building a detailed understanding of crystallization and epitaxy in simple atomic and molecular systems, one that is soundly rooted in thermodynamics and chemical kinetics. One of the fundamental challenges of chemistry and materials science in the coming decades is to develop a similarly well-founded physical understanding of assembly processes in complex molecular systems. Over the past five years, we have successfully used in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the physical controls on single crystal epitaxy from solutions for a wide range of molecular species. More recently, we have combined this method with grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and kinetic Monte Carlo modeling in order to relate morphology to surface atomic structure and processes. The purpose of this proposal was to extend this approach to assemblies of three classes of ''super molecular'' nanostructured materials. These included (1) dendrimers, (2) DNA bonded nano-particles, and (3) colloids, all of which form solution-based self-organizing systems. To this end, our goals were, first, to learn how to modify models of epitaxy in small molecule systems so that they are useful, efficient, and applicable to assembly of super-molecular species; and, second, to learn how systematic variations in the structure and bonding of the building blocks affect the surface kinetics and energetics that control the assembly process and the subsequent dynamic behavior of the assembled structures. AFM imaging provided experimental data on morphology and kinetics, while kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations related these data to molecular-scale processes and features.
