Book excerpt: This ASI was planned to make a major contribution to the teaching of the principles and methods used in liquid phase ~esearch and to encourage the setting up of collaborative projects, as advocated by the European Molecular Liquids Group (secretary: Dr J. Yarwood, University of Durham, U. K. ). During the past five years considerable progress has been made in studying molecular liquids. The undoubted advantages of international collaboration led to the formation of the European Molecular Liquids Group (EMLG) in July 1981. The activities of the EMLG were widely disseminated in a special session of the European Congress on Molecular Spectroscopy (EUCMOS) held in September 1981 (for details, see J. Mol. Structure, 80 (1982) 375 - 421). Following the success of this meeting, it was thought that the aims and objectives of the E~G would be best served by the organisation of a broader-based gathering designed to attract those interested in the study of the structure, dynamics and interactions in the liquid state. Thanks to the generous support by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO, it was possible to hold a NATO ASI on Molecular Liquids at the Italian Centre of Stanford University, Florence, Italy during June-July 1983. This book is based on the lectures presented at that meeting. The contents of this volume cover the three broad areas of current liquid phase research: (a) Analytical theory.

Book excerpt: This book has its or1g1n in a NATO Summer School organized from June 25 to July 7 1979, in Menton, France. The purpose of this School was a comparative study of the various aspects of vibra tional spectroscopy in molecular liquids and solids. This field has been rapidly expanding in the last decade; unfortunately, its development took place independently for liquids and for solids. In these circumstances, the comparison of the basic concepts and techniques used in these two branches of physics appeared as a necessity. The lectures given at the Menton Advanced Study Institute, as well as the exceptionally fruitful and lively discussions which followed them confirmed this point of view. The need of putting together these lectures, in the form of a monograph, clearly appeared during the ASI and the lecturers accepted to write down the material they presented at the Institute, improved thanks to the remarks of the participants. It is the result of this collective work which appears in the familiar Plenum Series.

Book excerpt: This book has its origins in the 1982 Spring College held at the Interna tional Centre for Theoretical Physics, Miramare, Trieste. The primary aim is to give a broad coverage of liquids and amorphous solids, at a level suitable for graduate students and research workers in condensed-matter physics, physical chemistry, and materials science. The book is intended for experimental workers with interests in the basic theory. While the topics covered are many, it was planned to place special emphasis on both static structure and dynamics, including electronic transport. This emphasis is evident from the rather complete coverage of the determination of static structure from both diffraction experiments and, for amorphous solids especially, from model building. The theory of the structure of liquids and liquid mixtures is then dealt with from the standpoint of, first, basic statistical mechanics and, subsequently, pair potentials constructed from the electron theory of simple metals and their alloys. The discussion of static structure is completed in two chapters with rather different emphases on liquid surfaces and interfaces. The first deals with the basic statistical mechanics of neutral and charged interfaces, while the second is concerned with solvation and double-layer effects. Dynamic structure is introduced by a comprehensive discussion of single-particle motion in liquids. This is followed by the structure and dynamics of charged fluids, where again much basic statistical mechanics is developed.

Book excerpt: Our main aim is to examine whether the atoms and molecules constituting the world around us are distributed in space in a random and disordered fashion, like pebbles on the beach, or in an ordered pattern like the cells of a honeycomb. However, it is often impossible to make such a clear-cut distinction, and it is better not to use "order" and "disorder" as absolute terms but to speak instead of a "degree of order" and a "degree of disorder. " These concepts are fairly new in science. Up to about 20-30 years ago it was still believed (and in fact this belief can still be en countered today) that certain states of matter - such as gases, liquids, and amorphous solids - were characterized by a totally disordered distribution of the constituent particles, whilst crys tals, by contrast, exhibited perfectly ordered lattices. According to the present view, on the other hand, order and disorder often coexist inseparably from each other, though there are admittedly many cases in which "order" or "disorder" does describe quite accurately tbe actual state of affairs. Symptoms of disorder have recently been found in seemingly perfectly regular molecular structures, and symptoms of order in seemingly perfectly chaotic aggregations of particles. These dis coveries led to the formulation of new and important laws cor relating the structure of substances with their properties, and to tIlt' explanation of many phenomena in terms of changes in the degree of order.

Book excerpt: The main topics discussed in this book are the formation of the macromolecular condensed state from isolated long chain macromolecules in dilute solution, the salient physical behavior of the polymeric amorphous state, the liquid crystalline state of rigid chain polymers, the crystallization process and the single chain condensed state, all based on experimental results. The role of intersegmental cohesion and the difference between the single chain condensed state and the interpenetrated multichain condensed state are emphasized. In addition, the book introduces and discusses some new physical concepts, such as dynamic contact concentration, the looped chain, cohesional entanglement, the GOLR state (the global chain is highly oriented while the segmental orientation is completely random) and solidification-induced band texture.

Book excerpt: Amorphous solids (glasses) are important materials. They offer enhanced solubility and bioavailability for the delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs, and the liquid-like spatial uniformity and crystal-like mechanic strength for the manufacture of optical and electronic materials. Glasses are usually made by cooling liquids without crystallization. At the glass transition temperature (Tg), the liquid undergoes kinetic arrest, becoming a solid glass. For this reason, many view the structure of glasses as uninteresting and essentially the structure of the precursor liquids. According to this view, glass structures are not easily manipulated and engineered. For two kinds of liquid crystals (LC), calamitic and discotic, we show that glass structure can be systematically controlled by cooling rate, specifically through the kinetic arrest of a slow molecular motion in the fluid state: the end-over-end rotation for rod-like molecules and heads-over-tails tumbling for disc-like molecules. This finding challenges the conventional view that LC transitions are thermodynamically controlled, not kinetically controlled, and proposes a general principle to manipulate liquid-crystalline order in glasses. By utilizing synchrotron X-ray scattering to a family of polyalcohols (glycerol, xylitol, sorbitol), we observe an increase of hydrogen bond number and molecular correlation length as the system approaches the glass transition temperature. The more robust hydrogen bonding network provides a basis for understanding the dynamic strength of glycerol. The structural difference between two amorphous phases of D-mannitol has been studied by synchrotron X-ray scattering and solid-state NMR. The hydrogen bonds are stronger in the low-density amorphous phase through rearrangement of the second nearest neighbors without altering the first coordination shell. Density fluctuation in the low-density amorphous phase shows different damping and additional length scales from the high-density amorphous phase corresponding to a smectic like structure, consistent with ssNMR results. In a highly polymorphic system ROY, infrared spectroscopy revealed two conformational populations in its liquid and glassy state, corresponding to the global and local minima of the torsional energy surface. The equilibrium between the two populations is characterized by 8́6H = 2.4 kJ/mol and 8́6S = 8.0 J/K/mol. Our results reveal rich details in the structure of molecular glasses, from molecular conformation to hydrogen bonding to mid-range density fluctuation, from variation in a single phase to liquid-liquid transition. These results provide new perspectives and principles for understanding crystallization, polymorph selection, and the engineering of glass structures.
