Book excerpt: The present volume is a continuation of the EL.B.A. Forum Series, which was initiated in the spring of 1995 with the first volume, entitled From Neural Network and Biomolecular Engineering to Bioelectronics, in which a brief outline of modem bioelectron ics given as "the use of biological materials and biological architectures for information processing and sensing systems and devices down to molecular level. " The present volume highlights the aspects of advanced biotechnology and electronics originating from molecular manufacturing, which has been emerging as an independent branch of research. This volume appears in a crucial moment, when significant progress has already been made in this strategic field and when technologies derived from it are recognized as critical for the welfare of our society. In addition, acknowledging to the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research for launching the National Research Program "Technologies for Bioelectronics" in 1992 and for continuation of support of this advanced multidisciplinary research, we would like to acknowledge the support of the National Research Council of Italy through the "Molecular Manufacturing" CNR Strategic Project since 1994. The significant unique role of Technobiochip in the organization of the EL.B.A. Forums and in bringing to light the enormous industrial potential of bioelectronics is duly acknowledged, as well as its attraction and support of top level scientists to the series of EL.B.A. Forums of which this volume is part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanotechnologies are tools that measure and manipulate phenomena and objects at the nanoscale. Molecular manufacturing is the willful use of these two activities to create new objects or phenomena. The question of whether it is possible to achieve a stage in the foreseeable future when molecular manufacturing using nanotechnologies might be viable, and if so how to develop the field, is a point of contention in both scientific and policy circles. A framework for understanding the scope of this topic--possible benefits, development risks, and policy options--is presented, but it is not the intention of the authors to provide a definitive road map for future scientific and technological development; nor is it believed by the authors that such a detailed analysis would at present yield a fully credible road map given the immature nature of the field. Rather, it is the contention of this report that though important breakthroughs have been realized, much significant basic and applied research remains to be undertaken to realistically assess the far-term viability of many of the emerging concepts. However, a careful and objective technology feasibility assessment could help stimulate near-term interim achievements of great merit while preventing technological surprises from foreign players.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Labeled either as the 'next industrial revolution' or as just 'hype', nanoscience and nanotechnologies are controversial, touted by some as the likely engines of spectacular transformation of human societies and even human bodies, and by others as conceptually flawed. These challenges make an encyclopedia of nanoscience and society an absolute necessity. Providing a guide to what these understandings and challenges are about, the Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Society offers accessible descriptions of some of the key technical achievements of nanoscience along with its history and prospects. Rather than a technical primer, this encyclopedia instead focuses on the efforts of governments around the world to fund nanoscience research and to tap its potential for economic development as well as to assess how best to regular a new technology for the environmental, occupational, and consumer health and safety issues related to the field. Contributions examine and analyze the cultural significance of nanoscience and nanotechnologies and describe some of the organizations, and their products, that promise to make nanotechnologies a critical part of the global economy. Written by noted scholars and practitioners from around the globe, these two volumes offer nearly 500 entries describing the societal aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology."--Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This book takes a "bottom-up" approach, beginning with atoms and molecules – molecular building blocks – and assembling them to build nanostructured materials. Coverage includes Carbon Nanotubes, Nanowires, and Diamondoids. The applications presented here will enable practitioners to design and build nanometer-scale systems. These concepts have far-reaching implications: from mechanical to chemical processes, from electronic components to ultra-fine sensors, from medicine to energy, and from pharmaceuticals to agriculture and food.
