Download or read book Biological and Molecular Characterization of a Hypovirulent Isolate of Phytophthora Nicotianae on Citrus written by Glenn Curtis Colburn and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Phytophthora root rot of citrus in Florida is caused by P. nicotianae and P. palmivora. Biological controls are not available. A naturally occurring isolate of P. nicotianae was identified as hypovirulent on citrus. Co-inoculation of the hypovirulent isolate of P. nicotianae with either virulent isolate did not reduce disease severity. Root weights of the trees inoculated with the hypovirulent isolate Pn117 did not differ from the controls (1 or 2 weeks in non-infested soil); thus, it cannot be concluded that Pn117 provides protection. In the competition study, the hypovirulent Pn117 isolate infects the roots at the same rate as the virulent isolates. A pre-inoculation of Pn117 followed by an inoculation with the virulent P. palmivora isolate resulted in a sharp increase in the number of Pn117 isolates recovered and a decrease in the number of P. palmivora isolates recovered compared to the co-inoculation treatment.

Book Synopsis Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi, Phytoplasma and Bacteria by : Aurelio Ciancio
Download or read book Integrated Management of Diseases Caused by Fungi, Phytoplasma and Bacteria written by Aurelio Ciancio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-19 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on integrated pest and disease management (IPM/IDM) and biocontrol of some key diseases of perennial and annual crops. It continues a series originated during a visit of prof. K. G. Mukerji to the CNR Plant Protection Institute in Bari (Italy), in November 2005. Both editors aim at a series of five volumes embracing, in a multi-disciplinary approach, advances and achievements in the practice of crop protection, for a wide range of plant parasites and pathogens. Two volumes of the series were already produced, dedicated to general concepts in IPM and to management and biocontrol of nematodes of grain crops and vegetables. This Volume deals, in particular, with diseases due to bacteria, phytoplasma and fungi. Every day, in any agroecosystem, farmers face problems related to plant diseases. Since the beginning of agriculture, indeed, and probably for a long time in the future, farmers will continue to do so. Every year, plant diseases cause severe losses in the global production of food and other agricultural commodities, worldwide. Plant diseases are not limited to episodic events occurring in single farms or crops, and should not be regarded as single independent cases, affecting only farms on a local scale. The impact of plant disease epidemics on food shortage ignited, in the last two centuries, deep cultural, social and demographic changes, affecting million human beings, through i. e. migration, death and hunger.
Download or read book Applied Mycology written by Mahendra Rai and published by CABI. This book was released on 2009 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungal kingdom consists of a wide variety of organisms with a diverse range of forms and functions. Fungi have been utilized for thousands of years and their importance in agriculture, medicine, food production and the environmental sciences is well known. New advances in genomic and metabolomic technologies have allowed further developments in the use of fungi in industry and medicine, increasing the need for a compilation of new applications, developments and technologies across the mycological field. Applied Mycology brings together a range of contributions, highlighting the diverse nature of current research. Chapters include discussions of fungal associations in the environment, agriculture and forestry, long established and novel applications of fungi in fermentation, the use of fungi in the pharmaceutical industry, the growing recognition of fungal infections, current interests in the use fungal enzymes in biotechnology and the new and emerging field of myconanotechnology. Demonstrating the broad coverage and importance of mycological research, this book will be of interest to researchers and students in all biological sciences.
Book Synopsis Biological Control of Plant Diseases by : E.C. Tjamos
Download or read book Biological Control of Plant Diseases written by E.C. Tjamos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained in this book were presented at a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) held at Cape Sounion, Athens, Greece, 19-24 May, 1991. The twenty-eight more comprehensive papers represent the key subjects of the ARW covered by invited speakers. The thirty-four short papers pre sented in a research format are contributions of those invited to participate in the ARW. There was a total of 70 participants from 21 countries. The objectives of the ARW were as follows: to review current knowledge of biological control of plant diseases and plant parasitic nematodes, with emphasis on mechanisms at the molecular, cellular, organismal, and ecosystem level; to examine and expand on current concepts and synthesize new concepts; to identify and prioritize limitations in the use of biological control for plant diseases and nematodes and the scientific research needed to overcome these limitations; and to develop strategies for biological control through management of resident agents or introduction of natural or modified agents.

Download or read book The Genus Citrus written by Manuel Talon and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genus Citrus presents the enormous amount of new knowledge that has been generated in recent years on nearly all topics related to citrus. Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles and understanding of citrus biology and behavior, the book provides a comprehensive view from Citrus evolution to current market importance. Reporting on new insights supported by the elucidation of the citrus genome sequence, it presents groundbreaking theories and fills in previous knowledge gaps. Because citrus is among the most difficult plants to improve through traditional breeding, citrus researchers, institutions and industries must quickly learn to adapt to new developments, knowledge and technologies to address the biological constraints of a unique fruit-tree such as citrus. Despite the challenges of working with citrus, tremendous progress has been made, mostly through advances in molecular biology and genomics. This book is valuable for all those involved with researching and advancing, producing, processing, and delivering citrus products. Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies
