Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) wishes to develop a supplemental specification for Prefabricated Modular Retaining Wall Systems (PMRWS). ODOT currently has supplemental specification SS840 for mechanically stabilized earth walls, which is a similar type wall system. However, there are significant differences between the two types of wall systems in foundation preparation, materials used, design philosophy, design of facing units, and construction requirements that a unique supplemental specification is needed for each. The supplemental specifications serve to provide both design criteria and construction guidance for the wall systems. The supplemental specification for PMRWS is also needed to provide guidance to wall supplier companies for developing submittal packages to have their wall systems approved for use on ODOT projects, in accordance with the Prefabricated Retaining Wall Systems Approval Process. The ultimate goal of the Prefabricated Retaining Wall Systems Approval Process is to have an approved list (APL) of prefabricated retaining wall systems that can be used on ODOT projects, to avoid delays in having a wall system approved on a project-by-project basis. Currently, there are no PMRWS on the approved list, even though the PMRWS Approval Process has been in place for nearly two years. This situation is largely because there is no guidance on the material, design, and construction requirements for PMRWS. The supplemental specification will serve as a catalyst to encourage PMRWS suppliers to submit their products for review and inclusion on the ODOT APL. PMRWS generally employ interlocking soil-filled reinforced concrete or steel modules or bins, precast concrete units, or dry-cast segmental masonry concrete units, all without soil reinforcement. These systems resist earth pressures by acting as gravity retaining walls. The project team completed the following tasks: 1. Performed a literature review of the PMRWS in use in other state DOTs, making note of the different design and construction requirements and the respective specifications. 2. Performed a detailed review of the PMRWS currently available and categorized each wall system as defined in Section 11.11.1 of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, current edition. These categories include: precast modular block walls, precast concrete bin walls, metal bin walls, and precast concrete crib walls. Note that segmental concrete block walls and gabion walls were not to be included in this specification. For the purposes of this project, all segmental concrete block walls were considered to be made of dry-cast blocks and precast modular block walls were considered to be made only of wet-cast blocks. Document the design and construction requirements of each wall system, generally in accordance with Attachment J of the Prefabricated Retaining Wall Systems Approval Process document. 3. Prepared a report to document the project findings. 4. Prepare a draft supplemental specification for future use by ODOT.
