Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technique of Modern Tactics: A Study of Troop Leading Methods in the Operations of Detachments of All Arms That our people are beginning to manifest an intelligent inter est in the condition of the National defense cannot fail to be gratifying to those whose lives are consecrated to such defense. Such interest is a vital support and an inspiration to the defenders. It is hoped that this volume may be of assistance in guiding to some extent the awakening interest. In the first edition the subjects of air craft and motor vehicles were not treated, because although it was recognized from the outset that these machines would exert a very great influence upon the conduct of war, their tactics was at the time largely speculative. Such is not the case today. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Strategy: An Outline of the Principles Which Guide the Conduct of Campaigns; To Which Is Added a Chapter on Modern Tactics I have added to this Edition a chapter on Sea Power, another on the subject of Pursuits and Retreats, and a third on the Influence of Moral Factors on War. The command of the sea is so important a factor in England's strategy, that even in a book which is purely military it is not out of place to deal with it. I have also added Moltke's Plan of Campaign against the French in 1870. It forms a valuable exposition of the train of thought which determined the direction given to the armies of Germany at the outset of the operations in the Franco German war, and serves as a model of what such documents should be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inquiries Into the Tactics of the Future: Developed From Modern Military History The book herewith presented for the first time in English is a development of the work entitled "Two Brigades," and in its present form is, as the author says, what he originally had in mind. In describing the process of evolution by which the book has reached its present form, the author remarks that though the original work was well received in South Germany, France, Austria, and other European countries, it met with a cold reception in North Germany; probably because nobody likes to have his own mistakes pointed out. He intimates that although the Official Account of the Franco-German War is based on all publications and documents that appeared in print previous to its publication, and although it is undoubtedly the best technical account of military operations ever published, it cannot be denied that some thing have either been glossed over or that the compilers were, in some instances, misled by the defective accounts and reports of eye-witnesses. In fact, it is impossible to avoid the impression that the German General Staff, in compiling the Official Account, was careful to let no opportunity slip to increase the prestige of the German arms, and especially to avoid impairing that prestige when unpleasant facts could be passed over with a few words. This book has been chiefly prepared to aid officers in the examinations which they must pass for promotion, and to give them the views of a large number of eminent soldiers. It is hoped that it may direct the attention of officers to the military writers referred to, and induce a study of their writings, as Opportunity may offer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Evolution of Infantry Tactics Yet the conditions of this particular struggle have been by no means those I had in my mind at the time of writing, and the defensive form might have Shown itself locally far more successful than it has done, without in the least invalidating my conclusions. I had before me the conditions at present prevailing in Western Europe, in regard to communications, facilities of transport, and the like, and my imaginary armies were actuated by the driving power of modern twentieth-century Continental civilisation, which compels both combatants to seek an early decision at any cost. From these conditions in the aggregate, there must result campaigns of the Napoleonic type, in which rapid manoeuvring decides the manner in which actual collision takes place, and the construction of defensive works after the fashion of the early half of the eighteenth century, of the American Civil War, and the Russo Turkish War is entirely precluded by want of time. It is perhaps needless to say that the department does not consider any one of the solutions herein as the only correct solution to the problem presented in the particular situation, but merely as a solution that is regarded as reasonable. The same is true of all solutions prepared by the department for the various problems included in the course in military art at these schools. With wooden walls, broadside guns, and sails, it was the great fleet of many vessels. Today, with the armor-clad and its all-round fire, torpedoes, and ram, it is the single ship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Strategy: From the Xviith Century to the Present Time For the last twenty-five years I have formed one of a group of British officers who have been as intensely keen to fit themselves for command, and to prepare the men under them for War, as any men in any nation under the sun. This group was, and still is, far more numerous than the British public imagines, and those members of it, who have been fortunate enough to obtain and to recognise their Opportunities, have won for themselves the respect and admiration of all competent critics, of whom, unfortunately, there are few enough within our own islands. Wherever men met, in clubs, messes, railway carriages particularly railway carriages - we foregathered and talked, not shop but War, with the single, whole-souled idea of being ready' when the call should come, and so far from finding that this interest in our duty was considered bad form, I, at least, personally found that it made me everywhere a welcome guest. As, in addition to my own, I was a dining member of seventeen different messes of all arms, and besides my club in town, belonged to half a dozen others in different parts of the world, I think I may claim abundant opportunity for the formation of my opinion. Many of us had enjoyed, or rather made for ourselves, opportuni ties for becoming acquainted with foreign armies, and in proportion as to the use they had made of their time, they brought into the service a different attitude towards the fundamental considerations which lie at the base of all warlike operations than that which had hitherto prevailed amongst the senior officers.
