Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Ships of War After many years of neglect, the people of this country have awakened to the necessity of creating a modern fleet. Proud as they were of the Navy's achievements in the past, they failed for a long time to exhibit any interest in its present or future, and met all claims for its re-establishment by a denial of its usefulness, or by a lazy optimism of indifference which smilingly put the question by. Indeed, at one time, the popular solicitude disappeared completely, and outside of the service there was manifested neither an alarm at its degeneracy nor an appreciation of the dangers this made possible. With an apathy inexplicable upon any rational grounds, the notes of warning sounded by experts were unheeded, and the law-makers contented themselves by pinning their faith to what they called "the creative possibilities of American genius." They accepted this fallacy as a fact, they made this phrase a fetich, and with a fatuous hope believed it could, by some occult inspiration, in the event of sudden, sharp, and short war, save them from the fighting-machines which twenty years of tireless experiment had perfected abroad. In the end, by a neatly balanced policy of pride and folly, the Navy was exhausted almost to dissolution. Then Congress lazily bestirred itself to action, and prescribed as a remedy three unarmored cruisers and a despatch-boat. Heroic treatment, not hom opathy, was needed; but, thanks to a naturally vigorous constitution, the bolus sufficed to lift the patient out of the throes, and to encourage him into a languid convalescence. Luckily, the vessels became a party question, and their historic tribulations did so much towards educating the nation that a public sentiment was aroused which made a modern navy possible. It must be confessed, however, that the demand even yet is not so vociferous as to dominate all other issues, though there is apparent everywhere a quickening desire for the country to take, if not the first, at least a respectable, place among the great maritime powers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new reference work details all those ships and vessels of the Royal Navy, large and small, which were lost by accident or enemy action, during the twentieth century, from the end of the World War, to the last years of the century. In all, the fates of over 2,000 ships and small craft are covered, from aircraft carriers and battleships to motor launches, harbor tenders and tugs. Those vessels hired or purchased for wartime service, such as trawlers, paddle steamers and yachts are also listed. The core of the book is taken up by those losses experienced during World WarII, but peacetime losses and more recent conflicts such as the Falklands War of 1982 are included. Arranged chronologically, every entry notes the outline details of the vessel, identifies the Commanding Officer, where known, and gives a full and often harrowing account of the circumstances of the loss and the number of casualties. The details come from extensive original research using primary source material wherever possible. This comprehensive record of warship losses, from all causes, suffered by the Royal Navy over the past one hundred years, is the first single-volume work on the subject and represents a major milestone in naval research and publishing.

Book excerpt: “A comprehensive survey of the design history and development of the Royal Navy's greyhounds of the sea.”—WARSHIPS Magazine Since World War II, the old categories of destroyer and frigate have tended to merge, a process that this book traces back to the radically different “Tribal” class destroyers of 1936. It deals with the development of all the modern destroyer classes that fought the war, looks at the emergency programs that produced vast numbers of trade protection vessels—sloops, corvettes and frigates—then analyzes the pressures that shaped the post-war fleet, and continued to dominate design down to recent years. Written by America's leading authority and featuring photos and ship plans, it is an objective but sympathetic view of the difficult economic and political environment in which British designers had to work, and benefits from the author's ability to compare and contrast the US Navy's experience. Norman Friedman is renowned for his ability to explain the policy and strategy changes that drive design decisions, and his latest book uses previously unpublished material to draw a new and convincing picture of British naval policy over the previous seventy years and more. Includes photos

Book excerpt: Since World War II, the nature of sea battles, and of warships, has changed dramatically, reflecting profound changes in the world at large. This book offers a close-up look at what these changes entail, and how they have come into play in regional conflicts in Southeast Asia, in escalating naval hostilities between the Soviet Bloc and the West, and in skirmishes and major engagements in our day. Here are the warships of the Korean conflict, and the larger Cold War that paralyzed much of the world for forty-six years; here are the vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, which, coupled with the new, smaller aircraft carrier, allowed for a nimbler, more flexible force that could respond to the political brushfires of recent years; and here is the aircraft carrier of the twenty-first century, a military city on the sea. With detailed pictures and text, Modern Warships tracks the role of warships in a world of increasingly littoral naval conflict, where small nations can possess increasingly advanced technology and super-power dominance has declined. An invaluable resource for the military and naval historian, with many images appearing for the first time, the book offers a unique vantage point on today’s maritime affairs.
