The second part contains a gen eral survey of the internal life in Russia during the reign of Nicolas I and during the first, reformatory, period of the reign of Alexander II (to the year The third part deals with the history of Russia in the last thirty-five years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Stork and King Log; At the Dawn of a New Reign: A Study of Modern Russia Some complication arises in the far or in the near East - in Japan or in Armenia - and it turns out that Russian diplomacy reaps where it did not sow, spoiling friends and foes with equal impartiality. People become curious to know Why it is that Russia, which is so weak within, should be so strong without. A fresh move of the revolutionists revives the popular curiosity about the so-called Nihilists, who are always the centre of attraction for lovers of the sensational as well as for earnest students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' History of Russia It has been well said by a recent author that the aim of all the great reforms made in Russia since Peter the Great has been to undo what he did or tried to do. That struggle is still going on, and with Such throes that it sometimes seems as though the building itself must fall in ruins. The history of modern Russia is the history of a transition, and must needs be unfinished until the transition is complete. The death of an emperor or the execution of an assassin is not the end of an epoch. In a book for young people a long list of authorities may be spared; it is sufficient to state that the facts have been drawn from the best sources, - Russian, German, French, and English. In the first part Russian names have been done away with English equivalents take their places. A table follows for convenience. In all cases difficult words are avoided so far as possible, and it is hoped that this Young Folks' History of Russia is at least readable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Russia in Europe, however, with the exception Of Poland and Finland, is a country with one religion and one language: that is, the czar and his government recog nize and admit no other. That is the cause Of the perse cution Of the Jews, four fifths of whom dwell in the Southwest Of Russia in an area covering square miles, which is sometimes mentioned as the jewish terri tory. Every succeeding czar has tried to make all his subjects think and act in the manner prescribed by him. The process is known as Russianizing. And goes on incessantly in its different stages. Immediately after the conquest of a country, its people are assured that their religion, institutions, and language, shall be respected: the only difference is that the native Officials are displaced by Russians. This continues until Russian rule is firmly established, and no one dreams of resisting the czar. Then the Russian language displaces the native tongue, and if disturbances occur, the military is called in to inflict a terrible punishment. The loss of the native language carries with it that Of old institutions, and when the people have submitted to their fate, it is the turn of their religion. The Russian is in no hurry; he has a conviction that time has no changes in store for his empire, hence he bides his time, and is likely to succeed in his purpose. This process is now carried on in Central Asia where Russian power has found its greatest expansion in modern times. It is but fair to admit that Russian absorption there has been highly beneficial because robber tribes were reduced to law and order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Life: In Town and Country Russian life, the only phase of the national existence that the ordinary visitor ever sees, whether on business or pleasure bent, is the outgrt of the reforms instituted by Peter the Great, and copied from much that we are familiar with in Western Europe. The modern development of Russia has, it is true, grown with wonderful rapidity of late years, but it is almost entirely confined to the towns and the regions easily accessible by the railway. New railways are constantly being laid down, but Russia covers so vast an area that a glance at the map will sufi'ice to show how large a pro portion of the country must remain for many years outside their influence. Less than twelve per cent. Of the nation reside in towns, not eight per cent. Near enough to urban centres to be influenced by town life, while the remaining eighty per cent., people of every rank of life from nobles to peasants, dwell in regions that modern life and thought have as yet hardly touched to any appreciable extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Condensed History of Modern Times Principal Divisions of Modern History. - The Middle Ages have been characterized by the predominance of local powers like fiefs and communes, and by the small consideration paid the state. Modern Times until the nineteenth century are characterized by the preponderance of a central power or absolute royalty, and by governmental action substituted for that of individuals and communities. But while the political life of the nations was becoming concentrated in their chiefs, the intellect by an opposite tendency was bursting its bonds and diffusing itself over everything to renew all. The political revolution will result in the Italian wars and the rivalry through centuries of the houses of France and Austria. The intellectual movement will cause: a pacific revolution in art, science and letters, or the Renaissance; an economical revolution, or the discovery of the New World and of the route to India, thereby creating a prodigious commerce which will place personal property in the hands of the common people; a religious revolution, or the Reformation of Luther and Calvin, against which fanaticism will excite abominable wars; a philosophic revolution, brought about by Bacon and Descartes and continued in the eighteenth century. The latter will result in a new political and social revolution whose success unhappily will be compromised by blind resistance and criminal violence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King Stork and King Log, Vol. 1 of 2: A Study of Modern Russia A certain interest in Russia is one of the permanent elements of English intellectual life, being the result of permanent causes which do not depend upon the fluctuating tide of public curiosity. Two great rival States cannot possibly ignore each other. This interest naturally grows with the daily increase of the mass of people actually and intelligently participating in the political life of their country. Yet it is far from being due to political considerations only. If with every few years England becomes more truly democratic, she also becomes less insular. People take a greater interest in the politics, literature, social evolution of the great continental nations; foreign art obtains a footing in England; foreign ideas are assimilated and adapted to English life more quickly, England does not keep herself so entirely to herself as she did only a generation ago. She imports foreign intellectual goods to a vast extent; whilst formerly she was used only to export her own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes and Heroines of Russia: Builders of a New Commonwealth Modern Russian revolutionists still continue to put the cart before the horse by making Socialism the first demand in their programme before ever political freedom has been secured to guarantee the very inviolability of the citizen, and liberty of speech and union. They have evidently learned nothing from the disastrous experience of their predecessors, have not learned the elementary thing, that when we find a man prostrate, with limbs tied, our first service to him must be to cut his bonds and set him upon his legs, and not to teach him how he is to carry on his business before he is able to move at all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Russian Poetry: d104s and Translations The disadvantages associated with all anthologies are increased in the case of an anthology of translated verse, where the choice of the contents is affected not only by the translator's personal leanings, but also by the suitability of any particular poem for translation into another language. As regards the present volume, it is admittedly the merest outline, to be filled in later, as circumstances may permit. But it is hoped that this collection, in Spite of such obvious shortcomings as have been indicated, will convey a fairly adequate idea of the chief features in modern Russian poetry, a branch of Russian literature which has so far received very little serious attention in this country.
