In sequence of topics, to follow as Closely as pos sible such of the recent courses of study as have been the most carefully prepared for our public-school systems. However an author may feel as to details, he is in the main bound by the consensus of Opinion as thus expressed. The purely topical method, the attempt to exhaust a subject like common fractions in a single chapter, is now Obsolete in our leading schools, while the extreme spiral method is scrappy, uninteresting, and lacking in the continuity SO essential to thoroughness. Between these two comes the best type of our modern courses Of study, somewhat Spiral in arrangement, in that most subjects extend over several terms, but admitting of a topical arrangement within any one term, thus securing thoroughness and maintaining an interest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primary Arithmetic This little book, the first of our Series of Arithmetics, presup poses no knowledge of numbers whatever. It tries to give a cor rect idea of their value, both absolute and relative, by treating them concretely as well as abstractly from the very outset, pictorial illustrations being freely used for that purpose. We have not sought in its pages to go far, but to go thoroughly. It is therefore confined to the four fundamental operations, a very brief view of fractions, the most important tables of moneys, weights, and meas ures, and easy exercises under them. These subjects, it is believed, are so treated, as to make the young pupil think for himself, and to lay the right kind of foundation for a mathematical course. One thing is taught at a time, and great care has been taken to present every thing in its proper place. It will be Observed that through out the book slate exercises go hand in hand with mental Opera tions. In the author's Opinion, they are indispensable, from the first, for inspiring the beginner with that interest in the subject which is essential to success. This book imposes no labor on the teacher, in the way of ex plaining orally, furnishing examples, &0. It is thought to contain in itself all that is needed. The author would only ask those who use it to be sure that every lesson is thoroughly mastered, before proceeding to the next. Each principle presented, each table, should be perfectly understood and memorized before leaving it, even though it be necessary to repeat the lesson again and again. Time saved by allowing a Single lesson to pass unmastered, will be a tenfold loss in the end. The Roman Notation is not explained in this volume; but by means of the numerals used in the lesson-headings the pupil may readily be made to understand it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Arithmetic: First Year, for the Use of Teachers This book is one of a series soon to be issued. The point of view from which it is written is indicated in the introduction. The essence of the theory of teaching arithmetic can be expressed in a few sentences. The fundamental thing is to induce judgments of relative magnitude. The presentation regards the fact that it is the relation of things that makes them what they are. The one of mathematics is not an individual, separated from all else, but the union of two like impressions: the relation of two equal magnitudes. A child does not perceive this one until he sees the equality of two magnitudes. He will not become sensitive to relations of equality by handling equal units with the attention directed to something else, as the color, the texture, or the how many; nor by one or two experiences in comparing magnitudes. To aid the learner in seeing a 1 as the relation of two equal units, a 2 as the relation of a unit to another one half as large, a 1/2 as the relation of a unit to another twice as large, we must induce the repeated acts of comparing which bring these relations vividly before the mind. With this purpose the child is not required to build out of parts a whole which he has never seen, nor expected to discover a relation in the absence of one of the related terms. He does not begin with elements. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is divided into three parts. Part One includes the Work ordinarily done during the first and second years. Part Two includes the work of the third year. It is devoted mainly to the presentation of the elementary facts and tables of arithmetic. The text-book should be placed in the hands of the pupil when he enters upon the work found in Part Two. Part Three covers the work of the fourth year. Its pur pose is to give a mastery of the fundamental operations, and, through the study of problems, to develop the ability to use these Operations in a practical way. The aim of this course is twofold: first, to give the child mathematical skill; second, to give him mathematical power. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Arithmetic: Specially Prepared for Elementary Schools The Natural Arithmetic has been prepared to meet a demand which has grown out of the experience of live, progressive teachers during the last ten years. Many educators have learned that a large part of the matter in common arithmetics is of no practical use to nine tenths of the children in our elementary schools; and that the fundamental principles involved in the use of numbers are few but that they are enshrouded in many blind and useless rules. At least one half of the time usually spent in studying arithmetic is wasted in memorizing rules and processes, and in unraveling mysteries which yield no profit even when solved. The study of arithmetic is required, not only for its practical value, but also because of its supposed disciplinary advantages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Arithmetic A Practical Arithmetic should deserve its name, and we have kept this in view throughout. We have asked, What appli cations of Arithmetic is the pupil likely to need in life? What are the shortest methods, and those actually used by business men? The branches of Mercantile Arithmetic have received special attention, - the making out of bills, the casting of interest, partial payments, operations in profit and loss, averaging accounts, equation of payments, due. Much collateral information on busi ness subjects has been embodied. In a word, the author has weighed every line, with the view of giving what would be most useful and best prepare the learner for the duties of the counting room. The great distinguishing feature of this book is that it is adapted to the present state of things. The last five years have been five years of financial changes; specie payments have been suspended, prices have doubled, the tariff has been altered, a national tax Rivied, &c. N o Arithmetic that ignores these changes should be placed in the hands of our youth. Time is too precious to be wasted in learning things wrong, only to unlearn them on enter ing into active life. Our examples are adapted to the present: the prices given are those of to-day; the difference between gold and currency is recognized and taught; the rates of duties agree with the present tariff; the mode of computing the national ih come taxis explained; a full description is given of the different classes of United States securities, with examples to show the comparative results of investments in them. These are matters that children, as well as adults, ought to know and understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Stone-Millis Arithmetics Primary The stone-minis Arithmetics have been prepared with a view to adapting the teaching of arithmetic more adequately to the interests and to the needs of children of the present day. The adaptation to children's interests is secured through the use of the play instinct in the primary grades, and through the use, in all grades, of problem material relating to the various activities of children in and out of school, and to facts touching their experiences more or less directly. The adult point of view and the interests of adults have not been unduly obtruded into the work. In the second and third grades, especially, numerous games have been introduced that have been found, by actual use in the schoolroom, to be of intense interest to children, and to provide excellent drill work. Much problem material correlated with the hand work or industrial arts work of the modern school has been given. Many groups of problems relating to the common phases of com munity life with which the child comes into daily contact, have been used, such as collecting the mail, getting the coal supply, problems of the fruit vender, the parks, railroad traffic, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
