Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Practice in the Teaching of Composition In preparing these chapters, my hope has been to offer suggestions which might be immediately useful to every teacher of composition. There are many admirable studies of the arts of Speaking and writing; many useful texts in composition for the children, but few books which deal with the teacher's problems in presenting the subject. As it becomes daily more obvious that boys and girls are to be taught to speak and write not indirectly by the study of grammar but directly by the practice of composition, it 'is increasingly important that solutions for some of these problems be found. If the'principles enunci ated and the suggestions made here point out the way to any teacher, they will have justified themselves. I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to the Women Teachers' Club of the City of Edmonton for whom these lectures were originally prepared and in whose interest the book was begun, and also to Mr. G. F. Mcnally without whose encouragement and advice it would never have been finished.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Modern Composition and Rhetoric: Brief Course; Containing the Principles of Correct English for Schools Nearly two thousand years ago Quintilian defined rhetoric as the art of speaking well. Had he lived in the present age, he would undoubtedly have said, the art of speaklng and' of writing well. No better phrase can be found to describe the true function of rhetoric to-day. Previous to the last decade it was regarded as an ornamental study, abounding in theory and subtle dis tinctions of diction and style. With the development of the study of English in the schools came an awakening to the true value of rhetoric, and its relation to the study of literature and composition. To-day rhetoric and com position are inseparably associated in teaching the methods of simple, direct, and accurate expression, the principle of one being supplemented by the abundant practice of the other. It is strongly recommended that the teacher, by multiplying illustrations before calling for a principle, proceed in this method to a far greater extent than is possible in a text-book of strictly limited size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Composition and Rhetoric What should be most emphasized in a text-book on English composition is a question of much difficulty. My chief concern has been to discover what could be omitted rather than what could be included. The aim of the teacher of composition should be to bring his students into such an attitude of mind that a subject may be to them a genuine question to be answered, and not a mere occasion for combining words into sentences without regard to the thought. I have, therefore, laid especial emphasis on the choice and treatment of themes. If a writer can form the habit of choosing one sharply defined topic and of telling exactly what he thinks, the imperfect details of his composition can be corrected by reading and practice. I need scarcely remark that no book of instructions will make a finished writer. Only constant practice and merciless criticism by the writer himself can yield the desired result. My purpose is, therefore, rather to develop a few general principles than to prescribe definite rules. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Teaching of Composition Some apology seems to be needed for the publication of these lectures. They were prepared for my own pupils, and are here printed, except for a few slight changes, as they were delivered. They formed part of a long series of lectures, accompanied and, I trust, illustrated, corrected, or re-enforced by observation and practice in schools - a series intended to direct the attention of students, presently to become teachers, to some of the main problems with which they will have to deal. It may be said with truth that the best way to learn to teach is to try. to teach, and that the best way to train students for teaching is to give them opportunities for practice. And practice has in fact always formed a large part of the "training," whether that process has been regarded as limited by student-days, or more happily conceived as extending through life. But though practice yields much, it yields less than all that is needed. I do not speak now of studies of high value for a teacher, and necessary indeed if he is to enter into his full inheritance of knowledge and of power - studies, for example, in the history of Education, or in Ethics, or Psychology. In addition to practice and concurrently with it the student must get advice. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Matter, Form and Style: A Manual of Practice in the Writing of English Composition But I may be allowed to emphasize here the principle which has guided me - namely, that in all forms of composition it is with the mass that one should begin at first, gradually paying more attention to the details of form and style. I have felt that many methods of teaching were doomed to failure because they took the component parts of a subject first, each part separately, so that the pupil could not see the wood for the trees. Whereas it would appear more human and humane to get first the creative act, and then shape the thing created. He shows where many of the today's practices and assumptions about writing come from, and he translates what our techniques and theories of teaching have said over time about our attitudes toward students, language and life. Connors locates the beginning of a new rhetorical tradition in the mid-nineteenth century, and from there, he discusses the theoretical and pedagogical innovations of the last two centuries as the result of historical forces, social needs, and cultural shifts. This important book proves that American composition-rhetoric is a genuine, rhetorical tradition with its own evolving theria and praxis. As such it is an essential reference for all teachers of English and students of American education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric for Schools Certain beliefs that the authors of Composition and Rhetoric for Schools hold in reference to the teaching of English composition have influenced them in preparing the present text-book. 1. In the earliest years, the critical side of teaching should be subordinated to the constructive, stimulative side; the pupil should be encouraged to write freely and even unconsciously at first, to form habits of thought and of invention before his expression is minutely criticised and pruned. For this reason a preliminary course (Part I) of constructive work has been provided. To these chapters nothing has been admitted of a negative or minutely critical nature. The processes of work that a conscientious writer follows are described, as closely as possible in the natural order in which these processes occur in a writers experience. 2. Much, if not all, of the usual freshman course of rhetoric in colleges can properly be included in the secondary course in English without requiring more time than is already devoted to the subject. In view of the fact that only a small percentage of the students of secondary schools enter college, it seems desirable to present to the high-school pupil all the elementary facts of style, such as usage, clearness in sentences, paragraphing, etc. Many of the best text-books designed for schools, however, are purposely incomplete in treatment; they take for granted that the student will pursue a further course of instruction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Composition Lessons, Vol. 1: Third and Fourth Years In the lower grades teachers have been confused by the wealth of material, both in composition and in lan guage work, that is presented in the text-books. In the upper grades teachers have experienced great difficulty in getting models of true literary excellence which appeal to the pupils. In order to assist in these two particulars The Progressive Composition Lessons have been pre pared. Each lesson has grown out of classroom work covering a number of years; and no lesson has been included that has not stood the test of actual classroom experience. The aim has been to give the child power to express him self readily and clearly. The method is essentially inductive. Each week's work consists of three lessons. In general these lessons are divided into: I. The preparatory oral work, which must be thorough; II. The written composition; III. The cor rection exercise, which affords the teacher and the pupils opportunity to correct expression. The illustrative compositions in the Appendix of the teachers' edition have been taken directly from pupils' work. Grateful acknowledgments are made to the teachers of Public School No. 184, Manhattan, for the intelligent and helpful assistance rendered by them in the development of the lessons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Elementary Composition and Grammar: June, 1913, From the President's Office to the University Library It is not necessary to discuss the importance Of English train ing in the schools; that this importance is recognized in school practice is shown by the fact that usually more time is given to English than to any other subject in the school curriculum. Perhaps no other subject presents such difficulties for the teacher. These difficulties may be briefly summarized as follows: the numerous and conflicting agencies which may be employed in English training; the lack Of widely accepted standards in English; the language habits which are constantly being formed at home, on the streets and by the general out-of-school environ ment of pupils, much of which is liable to be at variance with best usage; the lack of a. Linguistic conscience on the part of so many men and women which has a reflex influence upon the English work of children. Poor teachers rely mainly upon mechanical methods of teach ing English which consume time and, while satisfying formal requirements of school programs, fail to bring about satisfactory results. No subject is more poorly adapted to mechanical methods than English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
