Book excerpt: A through guide covering Modern Portfolio Theory as well as the recent developments surrounding it Modern portfolio theory (MPT), which originated with Harry Markowitz's seminal paper "Portfolio Selection" in 1952, has stood the test of time and continues to be the intellectual foundation for real-world portfolio management. This book presents a comprehensive picture of MPT in a manner that can be effectively used by financial practitioners and understood by students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving Beyond Modern Portfolio Theory: Investing That Matters tells the story of how Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) revolutionized the investing world and the real economy, but is now showing its age. MPT has no mechanism to understand its impacts on the environmental, social and financial systems, nor any tools for investors to mitigate the havoc that systemic risks can wreck on their portfolios. It’s time for MPT to evolve. The authors propose a new imperative to improve finance’s ability to fulfil its twin main purposes: providing adequate returns to individuals and directing capital to where it is needed in the economy. They show how some of the largest investors in the world focus not on picking stocks, but on mitigating systemic risks, such as climate change and a lack of gender diversity, so as to improve the risk/return of the market as a whole, despite current theory saying that should be impossible. "Moving beyond MPT" recognizes the complex relations between investing and the systems on which capital markets rely, "Investing that matters" embraces MPT’s focus on diversification and risk adjusted return, but understands them in the context of the real economy and the total return needs of investors. Whether an investor, an MBA student, a Finance Professor or a sustainability professional, Moving Beyond Modern Portfolio Theory: Investing That Matters is thought-provoking and relevant. Its bold critique shows how the real world already is moving beyond investing orthodoxy.

Book Synopsis Modern Portfolio Theory, 1950 to Date by : Edwin J. Elton
Download or read book Modern Portfolio Theory, 1950 to Date written by Edwin J. Elton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portfolio theory is a well-developed paradigm. There are excellent textbooks on the subject. Of course, we are especially partial to our own Modern Portfolio Theory and Investment Analysis. There are also good reviews in more advanced doctoral-level texts such as Ingersoll (1987) or Huang and Litzenberger (1988). Finally, good review articles such as Constantinedes and Malliaris (1995) exist. Therefore, instead of writing one more review article, we will be more selective and our discussion will be rather eclectic. This paper will present four topics we find of particular interest. Rather than attempting to survey all articles or all issues on each topic, we will discuss what we find of special interest and importance. We will attempt to convey wehere the field is today and where it is headed in the future.
